Firewalls and IP Addresses

The thread previously had been closed, so I am here to stand up in my defence under a new thread!

"I just read one of your last posts which got closed.

It was said that you go to the same university and have the same firewall which is why your ip address is the same. Now im afraid that is rubbish. I go to Aberystwyth university and they have a very stong firewall. The ip address of each computer on the network is different. The firewall does not have a percific address. Sorry to spoil your fun!

So please don't use that crap excuse again and admit your the same people"

I don't know how the firewall in your uni works or how strong it is. But we here do all share the same IP Address.

Some-one educated in Computers, more so than EagleSurus, may respond to this message and educate This EagleSarus in the ways of Firewalls and IP addresses.

I will try and find more information concerning the task EasgleSarus, and I don’t intend to get off this subject until you understand what is happening!

It all depends on how its setup.

If they are running on NAT (network address translation) then the gateway computer would have an IP address which all others access the Internet through. This is also true if they use some sort of webproxy (mine uses SQUID), thats why my posts from Canterbury are from host basil.canterbury.ac.uk (I think) and as of next year Nicki and No1DisabledFan will also have that very same IP.

A couple of points here:

1) EagleSarus

a) Has no authority in these forums apart from being a member
b) Has no access to the technical information relating to the host addresses of any poster
c) Has no understanding of how the Internet or firewalls work


2) All of the posters are different, although all from Sutton LEA

3) Any of the posters who had their memberships removed did so because they have autoresponders on their email. Anyone whi has an autoresponse or out of office replies will have their memberships removed

I would be grateful if members (and moderators) would desist from flaming younger members.

But more seriously, do you not think it a bit unfair to remove membership for those that have autoreplies on their email addresses?

I'm registered at my work address most of the time and when I'm out on business I have to turn my auto-reply on. I don't really want to lose my membership.

Please advise.

I think the problem was that the member (I can't remember which one) had his account set up to send them an email every time they received a reply to a thread. Their email account then sent Dave a load of rubbish about "Mahmood being the greatest martial artist with great strength and dexterity etc etc" every single time.

This will get on your tits fairly quickly.

1)Yes i am well aware of my limited powers on these sites

2)All i did was see a point made by another MODERATOR who STATED that they had the same IP address.

3)All i did was state that my University has a firewall and the ip address's are different.

4)Yes I do have knowledge of how internet systems work

5) Yes I do know how my university firewall works due to having to put up with it when i was at University.

eaglesrus I think you should perhaps lighten up a bit.

Dave had a go at all of us who slagged them off (the younger members) and as I was the first on this thread, that included me. I didnt take it to heart.

Also I think that you should revise your opinion that you know a lot about the Internet, as you would understand that a Firewall and a Gateway are two different things. A firewall does not act as a proxy or NAT device to the network, it instead filters traffic (mainly ICMP) to prevent unauthorised access onto the network.

Dave, firstly I have told my friends to use another e-mail address or cancel their auto-response because of this.
However, now I know why –Skill-Less- was banned, and I think I deserved to know of this or have a warning to cancel my auto-response. Anyway, that is old news, now, and I do not intend to go back on the matter.

As for Macca and I being the same person, I’m glad you, Eagle-Saurus now understand how this system works, as you did not listen to me, and are glad you listened to Dave and others.
