Here we go, if anyone has any other suggestions I will add them (can I do that? or does the moderator have to?)

Napster:
Good points: None
Bad points: It's dead - no songs, no users.

AudioGalaxy
Good points: Download queue, Resumable downloads, Easy to use once used to the interface.
Bad points: No support for wma and other formats, a lot of downtime on their website, beginning to block some songs, eg Moby
I usually use this.

MusicCity
Good points: Fast downloads
Bad points: Doesn't have a huge user base, not as easy to use as AG.
I use this network using another piece of software called "Kazza" which is better than Morpheus - www.kazaa.com

Gnutella
Good points: Will never be closed down
Bad points: Slow searches, crap slow software

BTW, there's FileShare, eDonkey2000, iMESH and WinMX as well, but I didn't try them for very long because my first impressions were that they were crap!

I am not a heavy user of these websites / programs.

But you cant say Napster has no good points and is dead. Recently I tried Audiogalaxy and it took me over an hour to figure out how to download the song I wanted after much frustration and Im not a moron.
:( I would not describe it as easy to learn or use as Napster.

I much preferred the Napster system of transfers and the way it displays those as it is clearer.. It also has download queues and resumable transfers as well but you only mention AG as having those features. I only got the AG song by accident and clicking everybloodywhere.

It isnt as dead as you might think either as only the top 100,000 songs are out. This is easily circumvented by deliberately misspelling of either the song or the artist. If you wanted Thriller by Michael Jackson you can type in Thriller or Jackson and you will get some matches that are misspelt.

Yes but the download queues on Napster only work if the person you are downloading from stays online for as long as it is in the queue. What if I want to download 30 songs during the night? The chances of that person staying online is almost nil.

The resumable downloads on Napster (when I last checked) not automatic. Eg, you are downloading a very rare piece of music which is not always online. AG will automatically restart the download when it becomes available.

I'm not saying Napster is a bad program, it was reliable and easy to use which allowed it to beat the competition at the time. But what's the point when you have to misspell things in order to download them!

Admitedly, the AG interface is a little hard to understand at first, but once you get going it is far easier to navigate than the competition.

is kazaa safe to use?

I've heard there are some spyware progs. associated with audiogalaxy but arent there som eissues with kazzaa too? I've heard something about 'brilliant' software being installed, not sure what it does but think its something to do with using your bandwidth to distribute banners to other users.

Anyone know any more?
