View Full Version : Sitting in the Gillingham end : Advice please!

My old man has just come back with five tickets in the Gillingham end for the Boxing Day game. At first I was obviously pleased because I thought we had sold out, but he then said we will have to sit very quietly and eat our turkey sandwiches when Palace score.

Now, he is a very presentable Franz Beckenbauer look-alike in his mid-50s and unlikely to be started on, however I am more than aware that if I let slip as much as a smirk when our third goes in, I could be lynched!

Is this course of action safe and will we be alone!? http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Do you mean the Rainham end ie behind the goal? If so I would advise you to keep your thoughts to yourself, chew on your scarf or something. This is NOT the end you would want to demonstrate your allegiance!
The two stands along the side of the pitch tend to attract a less volatile clientele.
I do not want to paint Gillingham as dodgy, just consider how away fans might be welcomed if they popped up in the middle of the Coppell stand!

Not to be reccommended - From what I have hard Gillnigham has some rough elements - remember the Fulham fan that was stabbed there.

What part of the ground have you got tickets for? This late in the day i assume it is the terracing. Speaking to Palace fans it seems the majority of our fans are either in the home terracing or the Rainham end, I have not heard of many being down the sides. From what I understand the hooligan element of Gillingham tend to be in the Rainham end but I wouldn't be too surprised to see some of them in the terracing as they know there will be lots of Palace there. Personally I think there may be bedlam on the terracing if there are too many Palace in there. Either way I think you may be prudent to keep your colours to yourself until you can work out if you are safe or not.I'd advise you wear trainers just in case you need to make a quick exit!

Wear a Gillingham scarf and pretend to know nothing about the game other than that you see one of them a year. Just remember not to cheer when we score.

As stated on another thread, he wasn't stabbed, somebody punched him, he fell and hit his head on the kerb.

My advice to anybody going in the Rainham end is cheer Gillingham if they score.

I am going to find out which end we are in today, but if we are in the Rainham then it will be very difficult not to get excited when we score.

Is it worth wishing for a 0-0 draw to stay in one piece!! http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Used to live down that way (Walderslade) and I would not recommend giving it the big un when we score, lots of Chelsea/West ham boyz go down there if and when their prefered battle grounds are shut. As mentioned earlier down the sides (where I will be) is safer

two years ago i cheered a man city goal when standing in the rainham end by mistake.

i was totally p'd, had failed to notice that the teams had changed ends and was also trying to keep up with Palace Swindon on the radio. i dont know why i was even there.

anyway, i survived said incident.

Having been a Maidstone Utd season ticket holder in the "old days" I know from 1st hand experience that the Gypo's like nothing better than a tear up over Christmas!

I remember being chased by a 50 strong mob along the railway tracks after "The Stones" beat them 0-2 in a very rare derby fixture.

There not as placid as some may think, just make sure your in numbers!

It's going to bring back great memories standing in the away end and watching the Gypo's get stuffed!

My advice would be cheer everything, regardless. That way people will think you're a nutter.

If someone questions your intelligence - just mention the fact that you "come from the house of God" and they'll leave you be.

Well that's not the sort of thing you'd quickly forget! At least there aren't any trains on Boxing Day...

Ash, Jimmy the lips and myself are in the Town end on Boxing day. Designated HOME ONLY. I have been told by a Gill fan that it will be Ok if you stand near the Police Box. No S**T Sherlock, came my reply. But It may be an idea if as many Palace are together as possible. So if anyone else is in the Town End (terracing) Come and join us!!!

I remember when I lived in Oxford and for the Oxford/Man Utd cup match at Oxford in ?1984 the only ticket I could get was in the away end. I was standing right in the middle of the Man Utd crowd when Oxford scored and my shout of "YES!!!!!!" quickly died away as I was prodded severely from behind and it was suggested that I might like to keep quiet (in the nicest possible way).

In the end when Manure equalised, everyone in the stand (except me) was happy again - they celebrated and I stood still.

Oxford went on to lose in the reply at Old Trafford.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated as I can assure you there will be a few of us there.

I think that a carnation in the button hole and a copy of the Telegraph under the arm should do it....especially if there is a clock next to the Police Hut!

How about after we have won, all the Gillingham fans will have left and we can stay behind and sing our hearts out and release all the pent up joy built up through the glorious 90 minutes! http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
