England v. Australia in Soccer "Ashes" Test
English football
23/7/01
It was mooted last year and more discussions have been held this season for a Football Test Match between England and Australia.
With the popularity of all battles involving English/British sporting teams and those from Australia, it seems inevitable that England and the Socceroos battle it out on a regular basis for a cricket inspired 'Ashes' honour.
Critics of English sporting teams may indeed feel that such a series is necessary as it would enable England at least one opportunity to defeat Australia at something - but with the huge growth and talent of Australian players in Europe, especially those in the Premier League, perhaps even this is not a 'given'.
Discussions have apparently taken place about a match next season in the lead-up to the 2002 World Cup finals, with management of both national teams hoping that such a match would be a warm-up for the finals.
As it stands, Australia has only 180 minutes remaining in qualifying for the finals, whilst England's path is longer and unless it defeats Germany on September 1, much more unlikely.
bring it on !!!
