I don't care whether it's mellow or punk but I need to put together a CD of London-based songs for a friend who is in Australia for an indeterminate amount of time. I've already got the obvious ones such as 'London Calling', 'Baker Street', 'Up the Junction' and anything from Carter USM. Vaughan Williams's 'London Symphony' won't be on there. What else is there?

Eh? by the Clash, surely
'Give you all the hits to play… to keep you in your place all day…'
Capital Radio – in tune with nothing, which is as it ever was and will be
How about…
In the City by the Jam (doesn't mention London by name, but that's the place Weller was talking about)
Razzle In My Pocket by Ian Dury and the Blocks… 'In my yellow jersey I went out on the nick, South Street Romford, shopping arcade, got a Razzle magazine, I never paid, inside my jacket and away double quick…'
London by The Smiths (absolutely essential)

Finally got around to doing this thanks to getting my CDs out of storage, borrowing some and getting a couple out of the $3 bargain bin. I decided only one song per artist (otherwise it would have been 23 Carter songs) although two people crop up in two tracks each with different acts. The songs follow a bit of a story which is fairly familiar to the long time overseas traveller. Paul Kelly's 'Every F*cking City' just missed out and 'Where Eagles Fly' was a contender until the last few days :)

I'm surprised that some record company hadn't thought of this before as an idea for a compilation - they seem to have covered every other angle under the sun.

Took note of TAK and stuck in 'Parklife' and decided to add 'Every F*cking City' as well as it fits the theme near the end. Also changed 'A Bomb' for 'Down In A Tube Station At Midnight' as it ties in better with the songs following it. Not very many happy ones in that list :)

Even if its only 'Up the Junction' surely the best London band ever.

Doh !
I knew all those years of single handedly ( phnar, phnar ) keeping Kleenex in profit would come back to haunt me.

There are also a couple of Nine Below Zero tracks that feature London heavily but cannot remember the titles off the top of my head.

Dunno if it fits the criteria but 'Saturday Night' by Suede and 'Ernold Same' by Blur are two songs which always make me think of London.
Ohhh and 'Bar Italia' by Pulp thats a good un which conjures up images of a London hangover.
