LOMBARDO RECOMMENDATION FOR RIZZO
OPTA
Sunday, July 16, 2000

FORMER Crystal Palace midfielder Attilio Lombardo paved the way for winger Nicky Rizzo's transfer to Italian Serie B side Ternana.

21-year-old Rizzo was recommended to the Italian side by Lombardo (pictured), and this was enough for the club to agree a £100,000 deal with Palace for the Australian international, who joined Palace from Liverpool in 1998.

Meanwhile, the First Division side have been boosted by veteran defender Dean Austin's decision to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park. Austin had been linked with a move to Sheffield United this summer, but has now put pen-to-paper on a new two-year deal.

New Palace chairman Simon Jordan said: "We are delighted Dean is staying."

The club continue negotiations with midfielder Jamie Fullarton and defender Andy Linighan, who are yet to commit themselves to new deals.

Great news on Deano.

Rizzo - probably for the best - a case of what might have been? How much did we pay for him in '98?

I seem to remember a fee of 150,000 pounds for Rizzo but I might be wrong. Mind you did we pay for anyone in 1998/9?.

Tales from the tabs in the Observer says we're signing Forsell.

That would be a good signing. Still think he'll be too expensive for us though.

Was just wondering when you say signing, do you mean permanently or another loan deal, whatever it is he'll be a good signing.
I always believed if we got sorted he would come back

Oisin, if possible can you put the article on here because when looking at the Observer site all it said briefly was that Chelsea will be selling Mikael Forssell, that's all it said.
Would be interested in reading the article.
Cheers

It's not really an article. It's a scentence. There is no more information.

I wonder if this is just speculation on the part of the tabloids? I suspect that his salary would be too high for us although the transfer fee could be paid (at least in part) by the sale of Mckenzie.

Lets see what happens

ok, not to worry Oisin,
As Dave says his salary will be too big for us to pay, unless he take a pay cut, but i still believe he will sign for us but once again will probably be a loan agreement with Chelsea but this time probably for the whole season.
Let's hope this is one of our loan players back from last season, let's see if we can get the other one back aswell!!!!

If it's Rovers could we use him as bait for Roberts?

As regards Forsell, I would like to see him at Palace whether on loan or permanently if we can afford him. His performances against City and Norwich at the start of his loan plus the goals against Stockport and Walsall showed that he has plenty of talent. And before anyone brings up Fulham & QPR, we need to remember his age and the fact that he hadn't played first team football for over a year.

Yep, I'm a Forsell fan too.
When he's fully fit and a year older, he's going to be real handful.....and once he's played alongside Clinton for 20 games, we may see a really good partnership forming.

I have posted this already on another thread, but it might be worth repeating here, the considered opinion at Stamford Bridge is that Forsell will be going to Bolton on loan.

Forsell turned Bolton down, he wants to stay in London, he probably decided that when he saw the state of Bolton.

I would put my money on Mikael Forssell being a Palace player by the end of this week.
Also, yes it is good news that Dean Austin has signed a new contract.

I recall reading a week or so ago that Fry in his inimitable manner said that he didn't want to pay much (if anything) for McKenzie as funds were too tight, and that now we were out of administration he felt that there was now no chance of us giving him away (obviously never bought from us before then -sarcastic smiley here but can't get the view smiley codes to work !)

Actually, I don't think Forssell is on such high wages as people tend to believe. Keep in mind he signed for Chelsea at seventeen or eighteen, and unless he's a greedy fellow I guess we could well afford him. The problem however might be that Chelsea demand too much for him.
