Well, I think so anyway!

Picture the scene. It's the semi-final of the Eufa Cup, second leg, Anderlect v Northampton. After 70 minutes, Northampton are winning 4-0, with Kenny Abrahamsen (see more about him in the "Help" thread) having scored yet another hat-trick, when our village has a power-cut for about 10 seconds. The computer switches off, and so when the power comes on again, I'm back to where I was at the beginning of the session - ie the day before the match.

Could I recreate what had just happened. Choosing the same players again was easy enough, and giving each individual the same tactical instructions. I have a settled team, and these factors tend to remain the same. However, for this match, when I'd played it before the power-cut, on the 12 "With the ball" screens I had moved the two strikers into positions I don't normally place them. Although I tried to recreate this for the second attempt, of course it was impossible to put them back in exactly the same spots. They may have been a fraction out here and there, but this would have been the only change to when I'd played it before the power-cut.

However, these very minor changes clearly made a significant difference to the way the match developed, and it finished 1-1! (Fortunately, Northampton still went through, or I'd have felt really pissed off!) I assume if I hadn't changed anything ast all the match would still have resulted in Northampton leading 4-0 (or does something random happen each time?) in which case it's interestring to see what a dramatic difference these minor changes had on things.

It's called the Butterfly Effect. Some boffin discovered that the weather on the east coast of America today was probably caused by a butterfly flapppping its wings in Australia a week earlier - or something like that. Basically, minute changes in any given situation can create a ripple effect which can cause huge and unpredictable results.

But also if you keep the same team selection and tactics the result might not be the same... damn the butterflies.

I used to have a crappy old computer that had a habit of crashing in the middle of games. On the occasions where I had to replay them using exactly the same team/tactics/instructions, each game would be entirely different. Sometimes it could be quite handy, at other times bloody annoying.
