View Full Version : your last song before death

ever so slightly morbid, but what song would you want to hear before the final curtain.

i've whittled mine down to three,

1) amejelo by Don Cherry, cos it's just so groovy daddy-0/cat/baby etc.
2) jelly roll by Charles Mingus, as makes me smile in a slightly deranged fashion.
3) knocking on heavens door by Bob Dylan, not by guns and roses - they play that in hell ( the devil does have a great sense of irony).

i would like to stress that i am in fact a serial killer, compiling lists of songs to play to people before granting them eternal rest, therefore those replying to this post do so at their own risk. i thank you.

In that case I opt for some long and wailing Led Zeppilin number that will go on forever :)

What a way to go.

I suppose I could settle for 'Way down in a hole' by Tom Waits

Is that all there is?

By Peggy Lee:p

They don't come any more apt and better than this which is one of my all time favourites:

I remember when I was a little girl our house caught on fire
I'll never forget the look on my father's face
as he gathered me up in his arms
and raced through the burning building onto the pavement
and I stood there in my pyjamas watching the whole world go up in flames
and as I sat there shivering
I said to myself
is that all there is to a fire?

is that all there is
Is that all there is
if that's all there is, my friends,
then let's keep dancing
let's break out the booze
and have a ball
if that's all there is

And then when I was twelve years old
my daddy took me to the circus,
the greatest show on earth
there were dancing bears, and elephants,
and a beautiful lady in pink tights flew high above our head
but as I sat there watching I had the feeling that something was missing,
i don't know what
but as I sat there I said to myself,
is that all there is to the circus?

is that all there is
Is that all there is
if that's all there is, my friends,
then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze
and have a ball
If that's all there is

And then I fell in love
with the most wonderful boy in the world
we'd take long walks down by the river
just gazing into each other's eyes,
we were so very much in love
and then one day he went away
and I thought I'd die
but I didn't
and when I didn't, I said to myself,
is that all there is to love?

is that all there is
Is that all there is
if that's all there is, my friends,
then let's keep dancing
let's break out the booze
and have a ball
if that's all there is--

I know what you must be saying to yourselves
If that's the way she feels about it,
why doesn't she just end it all
oh no, not me
I'm not ready for that final disappointment
For just as sure as I'm standing here talking to you
I know when that final moment comes and I'm breathing my last
I'll be saying to myself

is that all there is
Is that all there is
if that's all there is, my friends,
then let's keep dancing
let's break out the booze
and have a ball
if that's all there is

Did you ever hear a Version of this song by a singer called Christina at the end of the 70s, Tak? It was the first time I ever heard the song and it was a kind of electronic beat with f*ck off New York Jewish princess vocal over the top. Sounds like sacrilege but it was a great single. Attractive girl too.

Either:

It's All Over Now by the Rolling Stones
or
It's Over by Roy Orbison
as already stated
Glad (it's) All Over by the DC5

Is there a pattern emerging here?

It was Death of a Clown (I assume) but it wasn't by The Kinks - I think it was Ray Davies' brother that sang it.

I thought I was the only person in the world ever to have heard that, it is about the rarest single you could come across, for some reason it was deleted on the day of release, so I'm told. Been looking for it on an off for years, that's what got me into Peggy Lee in the first place.

I think I would go for the entire Ring Cycle by Wagner.

Firstly it lasts about twenty hours and secondly I'd probably be ready to top myself about two hours into it.

The day she died the neighbors came to snicker:

But when I saw her laid out like a queen,
she was the happiest corpse I'd ever seen :D

I think this was the version that Anne Nightingale used to play rather often on her Sunday evening Radio One show in the 80s (back in the good old days when DJs were DJs and not kids' TV presenters). Loved it.

Personally I think I'd have to go out to the sound of some choice goth. Would have to be early Sisters of Mercy, or Bauhaus. Yeah, got it! 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'! Perfect :)
