Any PS2ers out there? have you played this game?? it looks amazing- even better than ISS Pro Evo 2!! I'm even tempted to buy a PS2 this Christmas, rather than wait for the Gamecube (a bit like a Palace fan deciding to buy a brighton/millwall season ticket- considering what i have said about the PS2 before).
opinions?

Yep...It's definately a reason to buy a PS2. For football fans it has been just eagarly awaited as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Gran Turismo 3 was. I'll be geting it on day of release, I'm sure we'll all let you know what it's like then.

Why do you wanna know? IGN.com is by far the best. I think www.gamezone.com (http://www.gamezone.com) is British though. If you can't find ISS Pro evolution soccer on IGN, look for Winning Eleven 5. As that is the Japanese version of this game.

a UK or (european) PS2 site would be good since it would be concerned primarily with European games and release dates.
Those with a PS2- what's it like? recommended?

It's time to get excited. After months of waiting, Konami has finally taken the wraps off the European version of Winning Eleven 5 - and it's already apparent that it's something very special indeed.
Now masquerading under the name of Pro Evolution Soccer (to avoid confusion with Konami's ISS brand) PES is not the straight conversion of Winning Eleven 5 most were expecting. Yes, we thought a few tweaks would be made, but instead, KCET has reworked a huge amount of the game and has made the already superb Winning Eleven 5 even better. The most immediate differences are aesthetic, and gone are the occasionally awkward and rough-looking players, replaced now by higher resolution pros that genuinely look like who they are supposed to. It is also interesting that PES uses a slightly more distant camera than Winning Eleven 5, offering a better overview of each match, while not perhaps showing off the better visuals as much as they could. Nevertheless, the overall effect is very impressive, and with the seamless links to bookings, injuries and substitutions, the PAL game has lost the slightly stilted elements of its Japanese predecessor.
http://images.gamespot.co.uk/images/ps2/2001/proe2/gal_proe2_1_screen001.jpg
By far the most significant tweak, however, becomes apparent during play. One long-term gripe levelled at previous ISS titles and at Winning Eleven 5 was that the loss of control over a player when possession switch was incredibly annoying. Winning Eleven 5 went some way to address this, but PES has tightened it even further. Now, when possession is lost, the pause is minimal and the effect it has on the gameplay is huge. Players can now quickly track back when they lose the ball, and this creates a far more combative game with tackles flying in from all over the place.
The other additions are smaller, but nevertheless PES feels like a completely different game from Winning Eleven 5. While it uses the same mixture of through-balls, one-twos and chipped returns to such good effect, more control is now given and this takes a bit of getting used to. Passes are no longer just to feet and can be weighted in front of a player (giving PES a steal over FIFA 2002, which uses the same idea), while defenders are also more canny to through balls, making them harder to use.
http://images.gamespot.co.uk/images/ps2/2001/proe2/gal_proe2_3_screen004.jpg
The downside to such fantastic control is obviously that PES is not an easy game to get to grips with. But, then, neither were the ISS titles, and the rewards that come with prolonged play are more than compensation. It can be all too easy to miss an open goal through over-exuberant button pressing, yet this merely serves to teach players the delicacy of moves on offer. What's more, the satisfaction of scoring a 25-yarder having practised so hard makes it all worthwhile - and, of course, the better efforts can be saved for later use.
Konami is also keen to pick up on the showboating elements of the game, and each half is followed by a series of match highlights, cut to music and showing the best opportunities and goals. While most of us will end up skipping this, it nevertheless shows that PES aims to take on FIFA in the presentation stakes as well as in terms of gameplay.
Frankly, Pro Evolution Soccer is a stunning game. Even if you couldn't wait, and have bought a Japanese copy of Winning Eleven 5, PES is worth a punt as the subtle additions KCET has made have effectively created an entirely new game. The weighted passes, well-worked tackles and improved goalkeeper AI make PES the game to beat and, with the Master League from ISS Pro Evo 2 present and correct, Konami has ensured that this is as good an all-round player as Zinedine Zidane or David Beckham.
Indeed, PES's only weak points seem to be the awful commentary by Chris James and Terry Butcher, and that it still lacks the full official player rosters of FIFA. But these are only minor gripes and, come November, Konami will once again be topping the PS2 Premiership. And rightly so.

Mate, i've done a little (well, a LOT) of research on Pro Evo Soccer and you're making a big mistake in (temporarily) avoiding it. Rush to your nearest gaming shop next Friday- This game beats every football game ever into the ground. Fifa 2002 is NOT A PATCH on this masterpiece. PES is not only a great gootball game, it's a general gaming CLASSIC.

Get Time crises 2. It's a good laugh for oh about, 5 days. That's all it lasts for. The story mode you will complete in one of your 1st goes. Bonus rounds are good but get repetitive and boring. Much better off getting PES.

My brother bought this today. Must admit. First impressions are also very poor. I still can't believe people slag off ISS off on the PS2. I'm not saying it's better (even though I think so at the moment) but there's a lot more you can do. first touch i better, more skills meaning easier running with ball. I must admit, PES is very smooth but it's not all I thought it was cracked up to be......yet.

The mistake i made was comparing PES to ISS PES2 on the PS1. i found PES very frustrating, and really slow. The best way to judge PES is not to compare it to any other game.
Its taken me over a week to see how great this game is. For me the only down side is the goal keepers making a save. the ball seems to rebound off the keepers too much, for example, if a keeper dives to the right and makes the save, the ball sometimes goes out for a throw and all you did was have a weak shot.
other than that everything falls into place.
this game is getting near perfect, and i would stick with it.

I did complain a little before about the game, but I really have grown to love it. It's fecking difficult to score (especially with 3+ stars) but when you get the nack of it, it's just brilliant.
It encourages you to use the wings more often than not, and the fact you can cross 3 different ways is brilliant aswell...it means you can judge what kind of goal/attempt you want to make.
The real, honest, problem that I have is when your running at goal, with 1 defender chasing, and he "trips" over you, whilst getting the ball. If it rolls to the goalkeeper, the goalkeeper will more often than not, pick the ball up. I'm fine with that if it's a one-off per game, but when you've had it happen 8 or more times, it does kind of p!ss me off!
The game itself is smooth and looks beautiful. I was watching a real match, and for once actually thought, that I could replicate it with real ease in PES.
I give the game 4 out of 5 thumbs up! :p :p :p :p

I really enjoyed playing it, especially with two players on the same team. You can get some really good moves going together. There are alot less tricks and skills to play with (athough maybe there are and I have not yet found them) and there seems to be no way to plan set pieces as well.
Have been playing at 2 stars and it is very difficult. Beat the States as Finland though even though Grteg Berhalter was playing at the back. Aki soon saw him off though!

Sorry, I know there is a thread on this already, but I can't be bothered to find it - so I thought I would start a new one.
Got this game for Christmas, I was a great fan of ISS2 before. Must say, the graphics are amazing and it hasn't changed that much from ISS2 so it was quite easy to get along with.
Couple of questions though:
1. Do you find the shooting a lot harder than it used to be? I've gone 0-0 against beginners that have never played the game - they haven't had one shot, but I just couldn't score!!!
2. Can you still do one-twos? The manual doesn't mention them apart from holding L1 while pressing triangle should get a lofted one-two, but it must be a mis-print as that combination is a lofted through ball.
Any other things you have noticed from playing it a bit? I know quite a few of you bought it a while ago......
What?

Scoring is realistic. Sometimes you bang the gaols in sometimes you cant. Owen is great for getting goals, also Roberto Carlos. Popvic is a class defender!

I have tried repeatedly to do one-twos as described in the manual but it must be a misprint. Then that wouldn't suprise me - the whole game is full of things that haven't been done properly. Don't get my wrong I think it is a good game (and I haven't played any others so don't have anything to compare it to) - the graphics are fantastic, and after irritating me intensely at the start I am starting to warm to the gameplay (though I hate the way players sometimes seem to take an age to bring the ball under control) - but there are lots of annoying errors. What's the point in having the commentary if it is so unspeakably awful? The red/yellow cards seem completely arbitary; there seem to be lots of little things - having teams called "London" and "Manchester", calling substitutions "member changes" and kits "uniforms". IMO bits of the game have a rushed feel to them.

Disagree! I think this is spot on actually! Stops people sliding in all the time, makes you try and tackle on your feet.

I'm sort of half and half on this one - sometimes you can go for a sliding tackle but arrive slightly late and be sent off. Also if you are playing two player against some cynical cheat like one of my housemates they can bring you down when you are through on a one-on-one and know that they will probably only get a booking for what should be a professional foul.

What I find by far the most annoying thing in the game is when you've just done a lovely counter attack, yu have 3 players against...waiting for that 1 striker to make a run and they just stand there while you run past them. :veryangry:. At least on the old one you could just hold through ball down and they would make a run.

But because I'm a nice guy here are some tips:

HIGH 1-2 PASS L1+X,0.
FAKE 1-2 PASS L1+X,X
FIENT SQUARE+X
SPET OVER(COOL) L1,L1
Also when you are defending if you hold X down players will come and help you close the guy with the ball.
I hope this helps you, will we be able to play online in the future ? If so we could have a BBS championship.:p

Cheers mate. Do you know how to dive cos I like diving in games. :o I think most games that come out will have the network option shortly. Tony Hawks 3 already has it so that you can play as soon as the modem comes out. Hopefully it'll be in the next one anyway so i can show you how much I'll beat your arses by! "Bring it on"

Right... time to sort some things out.
You can't dive.
1-2 is done just by holding L1, and then pressing short pass, then through ball before the pass reaches the first player.
Faking is great for showing off - press shoot, and before the player shoots, hit short pass, and they'll dummy, and step to the side. Works most of the time by just pressing shoot and short pass at the same time.
There is a button used for 'pressing' the player with the ball - it's set as X by default. It makes the player you are using go after the bloke with the ball and try and nick it off of him. I hold that and run down quite a bit of the time whilst I don't have the ball.
R2 does a fast dribble - it has closer control than the R1 sprint, and isn't much slower - great for a quick change of pace to trick a defender.
And finally - when you cross the ball, if you hit the long ball button twice instead of once, your player will hit a harder, lower cross. Hit it three times, and he'll smack a waist high bullet across the area. They're harder to get over any defenders that are nearby, but if you get one going across the goalface, they can be anyone's ball.
If you hold L1 and press long ball, you're player will hit a cross into the area - meaning you can hit early crosses from further back up the field if you want. They work exactly the same as the normal crosses.
Personally, having played the game for over 100 hours... I think that the red/yellow cards are spot on 90% of the time. If you're through on goal, and you're taken down without a hope of a clean tackle, it's virtually always a red card.

This is where TIF 2002 is quality, parts about it were spot on. I remember once I brought my keeper out, he was quite a long way out when the player chipped him, as he was the last man back he handled it and got sent off. Also, If you want a penalty, you're gonna have to do a good dive for it. Shame that the game was a bit slow really.

What Si121 has said is entirely correct. If you want to know how many maintainance points you need to carry on to next season, go to "team management" or similar. It has it at the top of the page.
The best forward to get IMHO is Saviola (Samiola in the game)...he's scored 35 goals for me in one season. These are my signings:
Cannavaro
Savio (Vasio in the game)
Saviola (Samiola in the game)
Giggs (Gregs in the game)

Its almost the same for shooting. If you hold down shoot to full power then press shoot again the ball will fire along the floor, can be affective from about 18 yards.

One thing I just can't understand is why the commentary is so bad when it is obviously voiced by an Englishman - surely any Englishman would know that many of the terms used in the game are completely wrong (including 'audience' instead of 'crowd')
Overall though - Fantastic, and much better than the kid's pantomine show known as Fifa

Ok, i hope to be getting this game soon, i take it you can change the players name to the correct version. Even though it may take a long time to do all of them.

I'm not sure if you can. I know you can edit you're own players. Don't know about players already in it though. Should be able to. I'll check tomorrow.

Lombardo's not quick in it. He's just skillful. :)

hey you bunch of wusses, put it on 5 stars ;)
I started on that from the off and didn't score for my opening 8 master league games!! But playing on the high level makes you learn pretty quick, I finished my 1st season in 12th, and just finished the 2nd in 5th.
2-0 up against Boca Juniors in the last game, win or draw I go up. Lost 3-2. :grrr:
Top of Div 2 now in 3rd season, my team (4-4-2)
1. Kelsen
2. Matt
3. Valey
4. Nesta
5. Vorlander
6. Effenberg
7. Bellamy
8. Mendieta
9. Henry
10. Machlas
11. Babangida
A very very good game, but not perfect. The shooting is not as good as ISSPE2, the ball seems a bit "unnatural" when you hit it, and some of the headers I've scored and conceded were physically impossible!
Defending is perhaps a bit too easy, even top strikers on level 5 still run straight into you instead of sheilding the ball.
The new 3 different types of control (L1 very close), R2 (medium dribble) and R1 (sprint dribble) means you can't just win matches without even concentrating like on ISSPE2, which was quite easy once mastered. But even so I'm not sure yet if I prefer it to ISSPE2.

Didn't mean he was Speedy Gonzales or anything, but i thought at his age he would just be plodding along.
Also i heard the stats are taken straight out of Champ??

Aparently so. But some stats are completely different to Championship Manager. Can't think of an example right now though.

Don't know about everybody else but I find the easiest way to score is to simply run down the wing, cut back inside, pass it in to the box and just tap it in...just tap it in. Send the ball home. Happy? :p :o

This game is the dogs danglers - im third in division 1 after winning div 2 on goal difference on 3 stars - going to be playing this 8 players with two multitaps very soon - should be madness

2 vs 2 with one multitap is excellent.... much better than 1 on 1!

That'll just be annoying. You'll hardly ever touch the ball unless you're player 1, or 5 in that case. If not you'll just hae to gt the ball yourself. Will be a lugh though whatever.
