Dear Dave, following on from the New Chairman controversy and the Beattie collapse can we conduct an experiment with BBS contributors?
I suggest we make SENSIBLE suggestions for signing strikers and if you agree Dave to collate them and send them to him and AS for consideration. The see if we get a reply.
This will be a collective BBS attempt to help the club.
Please put their names current club and what you'd expect to pay.
My suggestions would be.
Brian Deane, Middlesborough, £1m
David Reeves, Chesterfield, £1.5m

Nice idea - but if we know about them don't you think Alan Smith et al will know as well?
Nice discussion to have though

Andy Booth
Carl Asaba
Lua Lua - reminds me of Collymore(didnt score much at small club then relished chance of playing for a bigger club!)
I can see him being a big star for someone even at 2mil

I can't believe nobody has snapped up Lua-Lua yet. He was outstanding against us when we played them in the League Cup - looked way below his level. Good control, good passing, incredibly quick and judging by his Premiership class finishing against QPR, brilliant goalscorer as well. Hmmm...3 million quid for a striker with 5 goals in 50 games or a couple of million for Lua-Lua. Tricky one.

I still think we should be buying as many Premiership youth players as we can. Black has already proved his quality and if we can find more players like Cole and Taylor it'd be great. We should look at Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U and Chelseas youth teams for quality. Players like David Healy, Alex Notman, Luke Chadwick, Clegg, Stephen Rose, Luke Young, Simon Davies, John Terry, Graham Barrett, Vernazza ........etc
These type of players are getting to the age where they want to be playing first team football and they will be some way off that at their current clubs. On a final note I think we should re-bid for Ashley Cole half way through the season if he still hasn't played for Arsenal as he will surely be getting annoyed by then.

I did read last weekend though that Ashley Cole has signed a new 5-year contract with the Gunners.
The only way he'll come back is if Palace want to loan him again for him to get first team football but i'm not very optimistic we'll be seeing Ashley in another Palace shirt again.

Without a doubt the player we should be signing is Barry Hayles.
Skill, commitment, pace and an eye for goal.
I reckon we could get him for £2M.
Frisky
09-09-2000, 03:55 PM
How about Nathan Blake? Still pretty quick, lots of experience and probably no more than £1m. He must be around 30 now so surely can't be happy hanging around at Blackburn. Fairly sure he is not injured - just down the pecking order at Rovers.
Another Blackburn player, Egil Ostensted was put on the transfer list yesterday I believe. Again - big strong and experienced. We could do a lot worse.
Joe Knight
09-09-2000, 05:38 PM
Andy Booth would be my first choice.
Didn't we try to get him when he was at Huddersfield?
Unfortunately, he is well and truly Northern and i don't think would move to London.
Shaun Goater? scored loads of goals for City last year - don't believe he's started a game for them yet this season.....

According to the Daily Express today Ashley Cole is set to replace Silvinho (wrong spelling?) today in the Arsenal starting line so I guess that is definately out now...
Asaba at Gilling ham looks good but he was crap at Reading so it depends how we play, I still feel that we do not play to our strikers strengths and haven't done for years.

I reckon Brucie Dyer would be good to bring back. And who said he is not big and physical. He is!!!! He is also tranfer listed (good opertunity)
or Midfielder Darren Caskey (whos was a MASSIVE prospect as a youngster at Spurs and scored over 20 goals from midfield last season)
Lua Lua Looks GOOD.
OR HERE's 1 not mentioned before...
NEALE FENN (i think thats his name)
Young Irish Forward for Spurs transfer listed) I've heard good things about him.
I feel we do need a big forward as Clint and Forssell would benefit from a tall giza like Phillips benefits from Quinn's flick on's. AND A BIG man would score loads of headers from Blacks, Carlilse's and Rodger/Gray's early balls whipped in the box AND HARRIS'S THROWS!!!!

I have heard that Arsenal have got a young striker on there books who is meant to be something very special. Anyone know his name?
Rev.B

Probably Graham Barrett. Was supposedly close to the Arsenal first team last season.

He's not someone I actually know - but Barrett has been on the subs bench for Arsenal a number of times, which should at least tell us something ?

How about Mark Burchill from Celtic. He was transfer listed (dont know if he still is) and Preston were trying to get him for 1.5mil.
Also agree on David Heally from Man u, doesnt he start for N. Irealand, I know its not that hard but it still must must mean something.

No Mr Russell here is the definitive list from all of the contributions so far.
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Jamie Cureton, only £250,000 to Reading but starting to score, were as Roberts went to West Brom for £2m?. Hatrick on Saturday as well.

I didn't say it was a definitive list !
Don't understand at all how Reading stole Cureton for such a cheap fee - 250k was a steal. Must drop in on a Rovers site and find out why.
However - he may well be one of those players who has found his niche - he played first division football with Norwich and I don't remember him being prolific before (but he would have been a good buy at that price though).

You clearly did not understand that it was a comment directed at their employer not their nationality.

I was sure Ships would do the usual old-boy trick of scoring against us last night - but he didn't. And from what I've heard, he never looked like doing so.
Either (a) our defence was f*cking excellent and wouldn't let anyone thru, or (b) he is no longer the Ships we remember so fondly. I suspect the answer is a bit of both, but perhaps some of us (including me) should rethink our calls for him to be the answer to our striker crisis.
Just a thought.

What I meant was no players had been nominated from 'overseas' clubs.
Now does this indicate a parochial knowledge of football on behalf of the BBS?

Back to the main topic, if we can afford him get Bent!

13-09-2000, 09:14 PM
Lua Lua would be an excellent buy but I fought I might put some ideas of non Eu players:
Andri Sigtórsson Iceland
Christian Lundberg Denmark
Jaime Moreno Bolivia
Javier Saviola Argentina
brighton_eagle
13-09-2000, 09:45 PM
No chance of Saviola, I think one of the big Italian clubs have an option on him already. Mind you, he is supposed to be the next big thing in Argentinian football. They did a feature on him on Futbol Mundial a few months ago.
Sigporrson would be interesting, but I don't know much about him, other than through CM3!! Moreno is playing in Spain isn't he? I think I saw him on Spanish Football the other day.

I thought Moreno was playing in the States. I'm probably wrong though.
Moreno does play in the states. At a recent contest he was the fastest sprinter in the league.
He is a good player, physical, skillful, good crosser and scorer and about 25 years old.
What I cannot tell is if he is good enough for the English Leagues. He probably is.
He is probably a better all round player than Stern John, who joined Forest last season, but, maybe, not such a constant goalscorer.
Worth a look.
He could be available for a loan right now, as his team is out of the MLS playoffs.

Shipps signed our books and spoke to us briefly after the warm-up Tues eve. His exact words were "I'd f.....ng love to come back here!". Just get on the blower SJ, he would be brilliant for us. We need players who really want to come to the club and he has the physical presence and eye for goal we are desperately needing.

Basically Cureton was out of contract at the end of this season and Rovers realised that he was going to walk away from them, so they sold him cheap. Reading certainly wouldn't sell for less than 1.5 million now, I reckon. Shame we missed him, cos i thought he looked good last year and would have made the step up to Div 1 with no problem. Oh well....
We certainly need someone up front. Trouble is, every club knows this and ups the asking price. I say go for Marcus Bent. That was possibly the worst sale in the clubs history.
