Project Gotham and Halo are looking quite tasty, has anyone taken the plunge yet ?

599-699 in places  but I've seen them going on Ebay for around 200 notes.

Paf ?

Is this the term for the naughty bits of Jean Grey, Storm or Kitty Pryde?

Might be - but not in this instance. Does XBOX sound better ? ;)

I think I'll stick with the naughty bits of Jean Grey etc. thanks!

I bought an XBOX from Amazon.com and got it shipped over.

It has to be said that Halo is a fantastic game. I don't think that there is anything that really comes close to it on the market at the moment.

Project Gotham is also excellent - with great graphics and really cool handling for the cars.

I also bought Dead Or Alive 3. This game has the best graphics that I have ever seen on a Video Game - but at the end of the day, it really is just another beat 'em up.

In terms of the console itself - aesthetically it really does remind me of an '80's VCR. Also, the controllers might meed to be changed for a smaller 3rd party unit - as they really are BIG and slightly uncomfortable after extensive play.

Overall though - the games are hot and that is what matters is it not?

arussell
13-12-2001, 07:19 PM
Indeed Shane. I haven't had a chance to play any of the games yet - but have seen videos of those games plus several others which also look promising.

Halo and Project Gotham Racing have been attracting rave reviews in the press.

How much did it cost you in total to ship it over - and did the other half mind you spending that much ? ;)

You can get them on import now my dear Padavano :)

Shane

The "bundle" from Amazon.com cost $499 - shipping via my brother in the US cost me £80.

As you can tell - I wanted it pretty badly!

My better half had no objection at all to me buying it. Although the fact I didn't tell her until it arrived may have helped ;)
If you see someone living in a cardboard box in Addiscombe this winter (possibly the XBOX packaging) - it's a safe bet it'll be me in there!

You want to get a Gamecube instead. Practically the same graphic specs. Much better games developers (So better scope for games) + it's a lot cheaper. Also Microsoft has already said that most games out for it will later be released on the PC anyway so doesn't seem much point to me. Although it's much better than buying a sh*tty Playstation 2 with it's lack of quality games and downright pathetic excuse for a DVD player.

Gran Turismo 3
MGS2
Pro Evolution Soccer...etc

What r u talking about?

And also...a DVD player is a DVD player. :grrr:

Yeah but i buy a games console to play games on (as i already have a DVD player). Playstation relies to heavily on their third party developers who could leave in an instance leaving them with no-one to develop and maintain games for them. Overall you can get quality racing games for any system and ISS on the Gamecube will be far superior than the Playstation version as it was Konami who released it first for Nintendo and it is much easier to make high quality games on it than Playstation. Unless you play the offerings from Square on the Playstation then get a Gamecube or XBox coz in the long run they will be far superior.

May I make a slight correction LittlePinkStar...

PES was developed by Konami Tokyo or KCET...whereas all of the Nintendo versions were developed by KonamiOsaka or KCEO. It's a well known fact that Tokyo's version is by far the superior...when Osaka released their version for PS2, many people decided to wait for the Tokyo version. Konami Tokyo is also exclusive to Sony Playstation and PS2.

I'd like to see some evidence of games being easier to make on the Gamecube/Xbox than the PS2.

Playstation do have their own in-house development companies. Games such as Gran Tourismo 3 are very well known.

If you want a good all round package, get a PS2...or, if you want to be even more clever, get all 3 consoles.

next-gen.co.uk are doing the xbox for 429. The gC can be had for around 170 mail order form liksang.

Halo is great, finished it now though.

Tony Hawkes 2X is good, but it shakes so much it actually broke the controller...........

Well, just come back from the States so I got a chance to have a go with both these machines (and I have played PS2 over here)

Personally, I think that X-Box rules for graphics, very closely followed by Gamecube (Rogue Leader is quality). The PS2 doesnt offer a great deal more than a Dreamcast imvho. Personally I would go for the Gamecube right now, at £179 on import it is an absolute steal, get yourself Smash Bros Melee and Rogue Leader. Wouldnt bother with Luigis Mansion though as it is a bit of a technology show rather than a game. Waverace is pretty tasty.

Alternatively, get a Panasonic Q Gamecube from Lik Sang and get a top notch (unlike the shitty PS2) DVD built in.

Strong rumours that XBox will be emulated on PC soon hence my decision to leave alone for the time being.

I guess what may swing it is which console has the best piracy scene. At the moment only the PS2 has one, but DVD burners arent within reach yet so give it 6 months.

Thought I would bring this thread back to the top again......

I already have an imported XBOX from the states.

Has anybody on the BBS pre-ordered a UK PAL XBOX?

It is launched on Thursday here in the UK, and I am just curious if anybody has actually pre-ordered it.

I can assure you that if you have, you will not be disappointed. :D

I also have a PS2. Trust me, the XBOX is all it is cracked up to be and more.....

Once you have sampled the quick-load times, smooth graphics and the fabulous sound on the XBOX, the PS2 looks and feels decidedly dated.

Top Games to get:-

Halo
Project Gotham Racing
Tony Hawk's 3x
Dead or Alive 3
Max Payne

Admittedly Tony Hawk's and Max Payne are not exclusive to the console, but I have played various conversions of these games and none of them come close to the XBOX versions.

I also hear that Rallysport Challenge, Knockout Kings 2002 and NHL 2002 are supposed to be pretty hot.

Looking forward to ISS on XBOX :p

The X Box is just a load of hype. Compared to PS2 and GC is way overpriced and the controlers are the biggest lumps of crap EVER.

I didn't know they'd launched it yet, how exciting!

Is it true that the graphics are even better than my Binatone Tennis game?

Are they really in colour? It would be a hell of a step forward for TV games consoles if that's the case.

What will they think of next??????

I'm really stuck as to buying one or not. So many different decisions. I'm going to wait to see what games come out and wait till one of my friends gets one. I must admit though, from what I've seen so far. I'm not very impressed.

I hear you loud and clear A.D.

Not only that but you have the option of playing in either colour or B&W. The colour doesnt help me but coz I only have a B&W tele anyway.

How many joysticks did you break playing that game? I'm sure the makers of Decathlon would have been recieving a slice of the profits from new joysticks been bought.

Judging by this thread, not a patch on its eighties rivals.

I have a PS2 but my oher half lent it ot her mother at Christmas we were meant tot get it back in January but I guess she is addicted and can't leave it alone. Mr Mrs has ofered to buy me a new one and let her mum keep that one or to get me a an XBox - lucky man. I am thinking of hanging on a few weeks just to see if MS have managed to release a bug free product, has anyone tried playing DVD's on it ? I am thinking of buying a DVD player for the bedroom (part of the reason for the PS2 but it ain't up to it) is the Xbox good at playing DVD ? And will the game cube be able to paly DVD's ? Must admit the best games console i have had is my orginal gameboy with super mario and tetris this wasted more hours of my time than my Atari, Master System, Megadrive and both ps's.

To be able to play DVDs on the XBox, you'll have to buy a DVD playback kit, which will cost you about £30 extra - buyable seperately from the console itself.

And no, the Gamecube cannot play DVDs, but on it's MAy launch, it will be retailing at £150-170, depending on where you go.

For me personally, nothing that is on the X-Box at the moment makes me want to buy it, let alone part with my PS2 for one - too many quality games around for the PS2 at the moment.

The Gamecube will be my next purchase, although it needs top quality support to avoid bombing like the N64 did.

It looks like third parties are far more inclined to support the GC than they did the N64 (probably in part because of the disc format and also, of course, the apparent ease of development).

I'm not sure the N64 "bombed" quite as much as you suggest. Certainly it was never a huge success, but there are have a dribble of quality games for the last couple of years (Perfect Dark, Zelda, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo, etc). Enough to keep me happy, anyway :)

Well, I spent the weekend playing on an X-Box, mainly Halo, and I have to say I was very impressed.

The controllers are excellent, really comfortable to use. The unit itself looks pretty classy, and there are nice touches like quick release for the controller cables in case they get tripped over.

Halo is an excellent game. In fact, there is no real point in buying a game like this for the PC any more. Good simple controls, nice basic premise, and lovely graphics.

Not sure how the GameCube will rival the X-Box. A lot probably depends on the games that are available for each platform. However, based on Halo, the gamecube may have it's work cut out, and lets face it, Microsoft can afford to chuck money at the X-Box to make it work.

Try Halo and Project Gotham racing for starters !

The PS2 is still riddled with hundreds of poor titles and I can still only think of a handful that are any good ! - I hardly ever play on mine.

Nice to see a console actually have some killer games at launch. Will certainly be considering swapping the PS2 for an Xbox.

By far and away still the best gaming platform is the PC - and Microsoft are cleverly capitalising on this by releasing a box that plays games of that quality.

The Xbox has just got the edge over the PS2. I will no way be getting rid of the PS2 but already im enjoying the Xbox! Much faster loading times, the graphics are completely smooth, controller took about 1/2 hour to get used to and it fits just right in your hands for easy access to all buttons. Ive got Halo, The gameplay is superb, multiplayer is superb, quality graphics, quality sound. It doesnt slow down when there are 50 enemies coming towards you.

Well Done Microsoft!

Well....that might be, but bigger adversaries have fallen at the hands of MS.

Apparently, for example, Halo was originally being built for the PC, but MS bought the company, and got them to make it as the launch title for the X-Box. Whats the MOST important thing for a console? GAMES.......the X-Box will have no shortage of excellent games, because MS will just make companies build for it.

I have to say that I'm staggered that anyone can say that. I know "each to his own" and all that, but I have to say that the XBox controllers are the most revolting and uncomfortable ones I've ever had the displeasure to use. The shape is ghastly but the buttons are the worst thing. Large, hard, shiny and slippy. Unbelievably awful.

But, like I said, each to his own. :)

I guess everyone has their own opinions, as you said, but I found the controllers excellent. Very easy to pick up, nice feel to them and the force feedback was not too much.

Ahhh! You mean the rumble pads!

Thats not force feedback though - only steering wheels and joysticks have that. It's used when say you are playing a driving game and your car loses traction - the game steering wheel will become loose like if you are driving a real car!
