You've probably seen Chocky, Aidan & I rambling on about our much-loved Videos on various other threads ... so what's the jewel in your own Palace collection?

Got to be the 4-3 against Liverpool, only for the look on Kenny D's face after Bright had scored. I always thought they should have made that freeze frame into a T shirt.

My most treasured video is a 1979 Betamax recording of the goals from the Championship winning, end of Season game against Burnley (2-0). So far as I am aware, this is the only recording of the game still in existence (except for the two or three copies which I have prepared - one of which I gave to David Swindlehurst, who told me that he hadn't seen a video of his goal before). On the same tape, I have the 'Big Match' highlights from the home game against Notts County and the final away game against Orient.

I prepared mpg clips of the Burnley goals some time ago, and these were made available for downloading from Tony Dudley's Site. If anyone is interested I'll upload them again.

James, I had the Burnley goals on tape but lost them! Fortunately I made a copy for my friend, so between you and me Neil's search for the Holy Grail is coming to an end!

Neil, he's found it and I'm picking it up this week, hopefully it'll be OK having just been stored away for yonks, but if there is something wrong with it, well we know James has the televised games from that season too.

My Betamax copy is very good indeed. Betamax was a good system! If you want a VHS copy of the tape, let me know and I'll run one off for you.

There are some great moments captured on the tape. The interview with Swindlehurst, Cannon and Sansom is particularly memorable (Sansom had just announced his engagment, and had been called up to the England Team). Also an interview with Ray Bloye (telling us how funds would be made available to bolster the Team).

Best of all, the interview with the mad 'Keeper, Burridge, who also features on the 'Big Match' opening credits with his hand stands.

I think it would be a great idea to upload some classic Palace goals to one of the Palace web sites. There are so many goals i'd love to see again.

Please James, point me in the direction of these Burnley goals, as my memories of the night are now very hazy (I was only 6).

Eternally (seriously) grateful, etc....

Hi James,

A belated response to your post about the Burnley goals - its great to know a good copy definately exists.

Chocky's got his tape off his pal tonight and he believes its got some "Brucie (not Dyer) Bonuses" on it. He's even forsaking the pub tonight to check out the quality of the vid.

If Chocky's copy is not great quality, it'd love to get a copy from you.

Betamax gave an excellent picture as did Phillips 1700 (although completely unwieldy system & tapes) - I've still got a few old Phillips 1700 tapes kicking around (not palace unfortuanately) - do you know anywhere/anyone that could copy these onto VHS?

James, Pleasssssse do me a VHS copy of the Burnley game! I will pay!!
My collection is pretty good, but is spread throughout my dozens of tapes -I must get round to compiling it properly. I've got loads of tapes where perfectly watchable programmes are inter-cut with Palace goals!
My faves have to be:
Salako's 'Pele' goal V Notts Forest,
Palace V Blackburn play-off final second leg,
and the nice shot of me spitting(accidently) on the back of someone's head between full-time and the start of extra-time at the cup final (just after Nobby Stiles is in shot)!

I've just watched Match of the Day Palace 1 Spurs 1 Div 1 79/80, there was about 45,000 packed in there, the Holmesdale looked superb! The old Whitehorse looked good too even though it was packed with Spurs. The only down side was having to see V*nables in the dug out.

Neil, it's ok & on it's way!

James, I think it's a great idea to create an mpeg of the Burnley goals with the pitch invasion and great shot of the Holmesdale for all those who never managed to see it on TV. When you've got a spare moment that is!

What link? I haven't put one up yet.

I prepared mpg clips of the Burnley goals over a year ago. I'm not sure what happened to them. I expect Tony Dudley has them tucked away somewhere. I'll ask him to make them available again.

I can't prepare VHS copies for everyone, but I don't mind doing one or two if blank 60 minute tapes are supplied.

Yes, I have a Philips machine as well as Beta, and I can convert to and from NTSC and SECAM if necessary.

Tony Dudley has found the missing goal.

One word of warning: This is a very big file (1.06mb) - it includes Swindlehurst's 1979 goal against Burnley and the crowd invasion at the final whistle.

Great memories for those of us who were at the game.

Any more mpg goal archive requests?

You dont have Gary Sprakes dropped corner(from Mark Lazarus?Palace v Leeds 1970ish?

James

I have seen that goal somewhere. I'll have a look in my archive collection!

The one goal I most want to see again is the Jim Cannon spectacular against Ipswich (I think) which helped Palace take over top spot in Division One in 1980. It was shown on ITV, and I had the goal on tape for several years until my sister erased it by recording Coronation Street over it.

Does anyone have a copy or know someone who does?

Having read an interview with Jim a few years ago, he was bemoaning the fact that now archive footage of his stunning volley against Ipswich had survived - now if footage is available, we know somebody who would be very keen to see it...

On a more important subject than the size of Little Al's member - but it is small - with the Birmingham game on the horizon, remember when we went there during season 87/88 and thumped 6 past them! A video was purchased from the Blues club shop and as far as I know my mate still has it. The abiding memory of the video (apart from the goals) is the deep rich brummy accent heard shouting after the sixth goal had been thumped in by Jim Cannon "your a bloody disgrace Blues"......

Egg Sample, that goal against Leeds you mention was scored by John Sewell during 70/71.He hit a very hopeful punt up field, and Gary Sprake somehow managed to let it slip through his hands. There were only minutes to go,and this goal earned us a draw against the much despised Leeds. This goal features on the first Danny (spit) Baker "own goals and gaffes" video.

James, you have made a middle-aged man very happy. I never expected to see those Burnley goals again. I would certainly like to see the Jim Cannon 'top of the table' against Ipswich, but has anybody got the goals from Wrexham 2 Palace 4 from 1977?
(Sorry if I'm interrupting a private Woolpack conversation.)

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately the Wrexham game was not televised (even for highlights). I was at that incredible game - when Palace scored twice in the last few minutes to give the vital two goal lead which gave Palace a better goal difference - and I am pretty sure that there were no cameras there.

Hello James,
I obviously respect (and envy) the fact that you were at the Racecourse Ground in 1977 and saw no cameras there. I was at college at the time, and turned up rather late to the T.V. room on the Saturday after to watch 'Football Focus' (or whatever it was called then) to be told 'they showed the goals from the Palace / Wrexham game and some scenes from the dressing-room' (this was of course in the days when the BBC recognised life outside the Premiership). One of the lads there was a Chelsea supporter - do you think he was taking the p--s?

Or anyone else as there wasn't a Premiership in 1977 http://cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif http://cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

Martin/James, I saw those goals on TV. They were shown twice. They were filmed with what seemed like a Super 8 cine job, with dubbed on crowd noise.

I've downloaded both the Burnley goals. The Ian Walsh one works fine, but Swindlehurst's comes up with the following error

"No combination of filters could be found to render the stream.(Error=80040218)"

Can anyone help?

James
19-10-1999, 05:25 PM
This does seem to be a fairly common problem with long files (ie over 500mb). I was in contact with someone about this a month or so ago, and he managed to solve the problem. This is the E-Mail he sent to me:

This is really weird but I thought you'd like to know the gremlin got booted out, although I'm not sure why!

Downloading the files again (using Save as...) didn't work, nor did installing the latest Windows Media Player. I still got that same error message.

In desperation I downloaded the files again by copying and pasting the URL to Go!Zilla (the download manager program) and also uninstalled Windows Media Player so it was just the basic little program that tried to play the files ... and it worked! Since then I've reinstalled the latest media player, renamed them and moved them to another folder on the HD and they still work. I suspect it was the different method of downloading them that made the real difference, although goodness only knows why!

I hope that helps!

James

Don't talk to me about the Wrexham game. I was only 10 years old and my Dad had to leave 10 minutes before the end as it was his turn to get back to the train station early to check everybody's tickets before they got on the football special train.

He gave me the choice of staying & watching last 10 minutes with friends or leaving early with him. Like a fool I left early and missed the last 2 goals. I did see them a couple of times on news programmes in the days following the game.

If memory serves me correctly Wrexham had Alan Whittle's brother playing for them and had bought in Bill Shankley as a special advisor to them. Didn't help them much !
