Paul Stewart for me.

After last night's match winning performance by Terry Phelan I started to think about who were the best players we've had on loan...my particular favorite was Kenny Brown - I hoped at the time we would him up permanently.

Yep, Stewart for me as well: a real battler while he was with us.

I often wonder what would have happened if Paul Stewarts signing had been permanent.
What was the reasons though?I heard that RN wouldn't cough up at the time. Seemed like a shrewd investment at the time but I guess we'll never know.

Agree - Stewart for me too. I remember that he wasn't eligible to play for the last 2 or 3 games that season, but still travelled with the team. He was interviewed at Middlesbrough the day we won the title, and said how much he was looking forward to making it a permanent move, as RN had promised him a contract. He certainly gave us some extra impetus when we went on a bad run at the turn of the year. Kenny Brown must come in as number 2 though, if only for some crucial goals (Charlton and Derby).

Talking of Paul Stewart I heard a story once that on the team coach returning from an away game the team all piled off into a Service station for refreshments etc.
On returning to the coach PS opened his track suit top and deposited loads of sweets, crisps and the like which he had nicked 'just for a laugh'

My vote for the greatest waste of time loan player Paul Trollope

I'm another Paul Stewart fan,but from what I've heard,I don't think it was Noades who decided we wouldn't keep him-I think Stewart dug his own grave as it were.Remember when Mel Blyth came "back home" to us on loan from Southampton to replace the inured Ian Evans in '77?.He did well, and i was dissapointed when we let him go back, eventually to join Millwall.

He's certainly a long way down the list of best left backs that Palace have had on loan which includes some surprisingly good players (a long way past their best though in some cases).

Ashley Cole of course was by far the best but we've also had Terry Phelan and Steve Staunton relatively recently. Good old Kenny Brown too, all of them a darn sight better than Clint Hill from what I've seen so far. Was Jason Crowe a left back as well ? I never saw him play so I couldn't really rate him.

It sounds like Coleman hasn't allowed his elevation to the role of management get in the way of his desire to have a good piss-up. From today's Independent ...

Cole, because he was at the time, not a Big Time Charlie. A fringe player at Arsenal suddenly finds himself getting a game every week at a club that was fighting for it's life, LITERALLY.
Stewart was obviously very good, but he already was a big name, and he joined a team that was virtually unbeatable at the time, he just added a bit of star quality that was good to see. But he also was very niggly, was known to mix it a bit unnecessarily. But mixing it in the Prem could have been what we needed from him, alas it never happened, so we will never know if he could have helped to save us.

Forsell for me.

Rumours at the time I remember (not sure if true) were that when he was a little off form, he was offered to us for £1m by Chelsea but we turned it down - he then scored 9 in the next 9 games or something ridiculous but then Chelsea wanted more money. Was that right or just in my head?!

He wasn't always very good for us though. At one stage, we tried to send him back to Chelsea but found that we could not under the terms of the loan. Indeed, his time at Palace was rather representative of what his career became: a run of games in which he scored plenty and played well, followed by a run where he couldn't buy a goal and went missing.

In general, Ashley Cole is the best player I have ever seen - and he had a tremendous attitude. All of which makes it so sad that he has subsequently lost it and become such a greedy so and so.

Noel Whelan, Trevor Benjaman, Ventola (?), Sorondo, some ex charlton striker for a few games in about 1999, Fashanu for one game, Mark Bright when he started, Terry Gennoe in goal, Myhre (spelling?) in goal

One of the worst for me has to be that fat ball of lard that Smith bought in on loan from Man City - Andy Morrison? Alongside Ruddock at the back we had the fattest central defence of all time. They made a pretty imposing wall at free kicks though.

Excellent point.

Paul Brush ? Wasn't he intially on loan from West Ham before he signed permanently.

Good winning goal against Brighton 85/86 IIRC :p

Looking at that list they all have chipped in with both good and important goals.

Cole - Blackburn at home
Brown - Charlton Play Offs
Staunton - Tranmere at home
Hill - QPR away.

Top 10 Crystal Palace loans - anyone agree?

10. Terry Phelan (1999)
The left-back added steel and experience to the side when he was sent on loan from Everton. Had the brilliant chant "We've got that Terry Phelan" to the tune of You've Lost that Loving Feeling by The Righteous Brothers.

9. Steve Staunton (2000)
After finding himself out of favour at Liverpool, the experienced Irish international got first team action with six matches at Palace and scored an amazing goal from the half-way line at home to Tranmere.

8. Chris Whyte (1984)
A cultured centre back with Arsenal, he fell down the pecking order with Tony Adams breaking into the side and got 17 first team games at Palace.

7. Gonzalo Sorondo (2004-5)
Signed on a season-long loan from Italian giants Inter Milan, the Uruguay centre half won plaudits for his tough-tackling, yet composed displays in Palace's unsuccessful stay in the Premier League.

6. Shaun Derry (2007-08)
Joined from Leeds United in a two-month loan and played a pivitol role in the Eagles' 15-match unbeaten run as they surged into the Championship top six from the relegation places. After that he signed permanently for his second spell at the club.

5. Kenny Brown (1996)
The full-back joined from West Ham and helped Palace to the Division One play-off final, scoring two goals in six appearances including one against Charlton in the semi-final first leg.

4. Ashley Cole (2000)
Crystal Palace fans were among the first to see the talents of Arsenal's young goatee-wearing Ashley Cole who starred during a three-month stint where he scored a long-range goal against Blackburn.

3. Nico Vaesen (2004)
The Birmingham stopper kept six clean sheets in 13 games and was instrumental in Palace's promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2004. He made two excellent stops from West Ham's Steve Lomas and Bobby Zamora in the final after saving two penalty shoot-out kicks in the play-off semi against Sunderland.

2. Mikael Forssell (2000) and (2000-01)
The Finnish international arrived on loan from Chelsea at the end of the 1999/2000 campaign and impressed with three goals in 13 matches. The loan was extended for the whole of the next season and his 13 goals from 31 starts contributed to Palace's Division One survival.

1. Paul Stewart (1994)
Although he scored just three goals in 18 matches, the on-loan Liverpool striker's hold-up play, experience and overall quality was crucial in Palace winning the Division One title in 1994.

Not sure how you judge Bright as a loanee as his brilliant contribution to this club was after he'd signed permanently.

Well, he scored on his debut and played magnificently during his loan period, which I think was down to worries about a pelvic injury he had.

Shaun Murphy is one many forget about who did a pretty tidy job when he was here.
