As explained in my message on the general discussion page (Can anyone sell ad space?). I still need more contributions for the BBS Book please

This thread is about PALACE PLAYERS PAST AND PRESENT.

There are still a number of players I would like to include for whom I have very few comments.
Sorry, this list will be a bit long but I hope it will stir a few memories…

Please try to remember specific incidents or expand on why a player was good/bad etc. Songs and chants would also be useful

Absolutely ayone before the 1960s
Johnny Byrne; Vic Rouse; Len Choules; Cliff Holton; Bill Glazier; Bobby Kellard; Mark Lazarus; Steve Kember and Peter Nicholas (bearing in mind that they too have stuck with us in the last year without much recognition); Bobby Woodruff; John Jackson (anyone remember particular saves?); John McCormick; Roger Hoy; Mel Blyth; Alan Whittle; Yogi Hughes; Doris; Martin Hinshelwood; Peter Taylor; Swindle; Rachid Harkouk; Kenny Sansom; Prince Vince; Jim Cannon; Nigel Martyn; John Burridge; Pembo; Supa Al; Ray Houghton; Iain Dowie; Rick Shaw etc etc etc

And don't forget the likes of Bason, Langley, Chris Jones, McCulloch, Geoff Strong, John Lacy, well I'll spare you further punishment…

please post your comments by the end of March
thanks

Tony

Nigel Martyn.

Didn't see John Jackson play, so for me he is the best goalkeeper I've ever seen for Palace, and is still my favourite ever Palace player. He showed tremendous loyalty, staying after relegation when others left (though at the time I remember him saying that it had been disappointing that no-one had made a bid for him!) and was rewarded with a championship medal and voted the best keeper in the 1st division in the PFA awards.

As discussed on an old thread, he produced the best save I've ever seen (including the Banks one from Pele) against Huddersfield in a 0-0 draw at SP. Their right winger cut in to the box near the bye-line, and Nigel came to the near post; but then instead of shooting the winger pulled it across the goal to Ronnie Jepson at the back post, who was only a couple of feet out. Somehow, Nigel managed to get all the way across the goal to block the shot from point blank range - the standing ovation lasted for ages. Unfortunately they didn't show it in the end of season video.

Another reason he was/is so good is that when he made a good save he didn't sit on his arse admiring it, he got up ready for the rebound (if he hadn't managed to hang on to it). He is an all time Palace great, without doubt, and he deserves the good reception he'll always get when he comes back to Selhurst.

I think it was Andy Booth, actually. It's still the best save I have ever seen, live.

I remember the Martyn save v Huddersfield too. I think it was Andy Booth.
It was in front of the Holmesdale and watching it from the Whitehorse Lane end, when the ball went to the far post it was a goal all the way - a free header into an empty net. i've still no idea how he got across because he was still recovering from a save at the near post.

Jackson was good, the next best we've had, and went on continued his career after us, i think with Orient (a few other Palace players went that way in the early/mid seventies and the orient team in the evening standard televised five a side competition one year was practically all Palace). The last i heard of him was reserve goalie at Ipswich.

Martyn though was in a different class. I saw him on the telly a couple of weeks ago make a fantastic double save. I thought he was at least as good as Seaman when he was at his best. On current form, however, Nigel is easily the best in the country and should be first choice for Euro 2000.

It most certainly was NOT a header! The winger crossed it along the ground.

John Pemberton.

Always to be remembered for the run and cross in the semi against Liverpool, but another thing I remember was away at Leeds in about 1988 (we lost 1-0). Before the game we were singing "Pembo, give us an aaaah" (like you do!) and he did! Then, just before the game Leeds had a new car going round the pitch (a prize in a draw) with 2 bikini clad girls sitting on the bonnet. Pembo was clearly interested until we started singing "Pembo's got a hard-on" at which point he looked at us, shook his head, laughed and got all embarrassed and moved in towards the middle of the pitch to carry on his warm up. It was a shame when he left.

For me, the sddest moment for me was seeing Nigel MArtyn leaving the Wembley pitch in tears after the play off final against Leicester.

In the many years I have been a supporter I rank our many keepers as some of the best in the Land, Jacko was outstanding.
Does anyone remember Millington (I believe he was a Welsh International).
Budgie has always been a favourite of mine, boy it is hard to pick anyone player over so many others.
The pride and passion I have for CPFC will never be understood by the likes of Mellor.
