View Full Version : Best EVER atmosphere?

JJ

The obvious ones are:

1) Sheff Utd playoff (last 20 mins);
2) Cup Final;
3) Semi Final;
4) Blackburn play-off 2nd leg.
5) I wasn't at Burnley so don't know...

HOWEVER! For me, the best non-"big"-game atmosphere was away at Ipswich on Feb 4th 1989 - a bizarre choice, but there you go! We won 2-1 (both by Wright within 3 minutes of each other), had Pemberton sent off in a case of mistaken identity (should have been Jeff Hopkins) and held on despite the onslaught in the 2nd half.

Others? (The more obscure the better...)

Leicester away Sept/Oct 1989 2nd leg of a League Cup match. We won 3-2 to go through on away goals.

Also 2 Liverpool games, both away in 1991, one April which we lost 3-0 and one in November, I think, when we won 2-1. The one in April was the commentary game on the radio and my brother said the support sounded phenomenal.

With regard to pundits eating their words re Livpl Cup semi, just remember that during half time chit chat and even with Palace 1-0 down Big Malcolm Allison still did not right us off.

as for atmosphere, going back a bit we played away at charlton on a very wet Tues eve, probably in 1977/8 ish. The only covered standing area was their end, and thats where all Palace went. We had half their end, big line of Police down the middle, generated a fantastic atmosphere, as I remember.

I know this was quite recent, but Norwich away last season was a fantastic atmosphere. If really put their home support to shame (and judging from last night their away support isn't much better! http://cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif )

The Wembley play-off is another great example - the last 20-25 minutes were excellent. Where are those 35 thousand fans now though?

I remember now, they interviewed Big Mal at half time in the players tunnel. He said Palace looked the stonger team & will go on to win. They then went back to the studio where they were still laughing (was it Hansen?)not for long though ha!

Don' forget Butch Wilkins, I remember getting back from the game, and having to watch it again. I deliberately listened to the pundits at half time so I could gloat at them getting it so wrong, but Wilkins wouldn't write us off like the others.

Hansen was on the pitch wasn't he? My fondest memory is the way the Liverpool players were all over each other when they took the lead. Their normal celebrations at that time were normally a sort of arrogant shake of the hand and jog back to the half way line. That day they were leaping all over each other until Palace shut them up. Dalglish's face. What a picture.

Best recent atmosphere? Away to Everton on opening day a couple of yearsd ago was great. Sunny day. Lombardo. The season wasn't going to be too bad in my eyes at that stage! Leicester away same season. "We've only got 10 men" rang round the ground for a long time after Rennie sent Edworthy off for tripping over one of their players (not tripping up, tripping over!)until Izzet came back on the pitch in injury time and scored an equaliser.

A bit off topic but did anyone see Big Mal on "Match of Their Day" last week. Pretty interesting to here what he had to say about CPFC (and his coaching, managerial and motivational skills too) and showed the goals from the 76 game against Chelsea.

Back to topic and aside from some of those mentioned above, the buzz coming out of Highbury having seen Salako's goals beat the Arse, and seeing all those Arse fans not understanding why we were buzzing. What a moment to be a Palace fan - and to this day I bet all those Arse fans won't get it (same for manUre, Liverpool and to a certain extent Newcastle).

Whilst it may be impossible to mention a certain game in which we have had a best atmostphere ever, I reckon Spurs away a 1-0 Palace win in 91-92 was brilliant.Arsenal away the same season was also great, we lost 4-1 but never stopped singing. I also reckon we've had some great Selhurst atmostpheres(the bottom of the Holmsdale anyway) over the last few seasons. Also wasn't the singing brilliant at Port Vale last saturday, whatever anyone says I think the crowd played their part in that last minute equaliser.

No, I went on the coach, which in a funny way also led to it being a great day for me, because I'd got to SP to get on it but the bloody cash machine at Sainsbury's wasn't working, I had no time to get to another one and so didn't have any cash to get into the ground. The guy running the coach was Big Dave (who I think sadly died a couple of years ago?) and he told me not to worry we'd sort it out. The bloke next to me on the coach lent me the money to get in, and when we got back to SP after that brilliant game I managed to get to a machine and give him his money back. It summed up Palace fans for me - he didn't know me but was prepared to trust me to give him his money back.

To make the day complete, I went to a club that night, met some old school friends who I hadn't seen for years, and met my future wife.

Top day!

Best aptmosphere after a game ...

Bolton at The Reebok a couple of years ago
- we were relegated and their fans applauded us - we danced - we threw them our shirts and
they threw theirs. Outside the Bill couldn't
work it out. Finally they broke it up because
they thought that we were too freindly.

Funny old game eh ?

The Bolton game was excellent. I was one of the Red'n'blue indians from the Woolpack. We had some cardboard canoes as well but they never got to us on time for the game unfortunately. The song of the day was, "we're going to Bolton ibn a Red and Blue canue! to Yellow submarine. Going home was special too. I can't begin to tell you what I had to drink etc. This was the time PISA shared our luxury double decker coach, strangely, they never asked again!!

On his video Do The Wright Thing, Ian Wright says this was the best atmosphere he had been in at Selhurst. It was a great night, but the crowd was "only" 23,000 or so - bearing in mind we were 2 games from promotion I remember being a bit pissed off about that.

Palacenut - I agree about the Sunderland game, except I was in the enclosure down the side of the ground right by the home end and when Palace scored they came piling in like the troops over the top of the trenches. Scary stuff believe me. The only game I've ever left before the end because I feared for my life.

Going to Bradford City early in the 1988-89 promotion campaign. They were going well having just missed out the year before.

We won 1-0, Redfearn scored it or made it, and our small(ish) bunch of travellers made a real impression.

close but no cigar; the midweek match at the Valley in the rainstorm that you mentioned was 78/79 (promotion) season and it finished 1-1. I remember arriving late, being taken by my Dad when I was 11 and heading for the only covered terracing available behind the goal and a copper advising my Dad not to take us in there cos of the fighting that they were struggling to control so we watched getting drenched on that enormous bank of terracing that was soon to be shut down. even there, the people standing around us that we talked to were Palace fans. great view; definitely 1-1. can't remember who scored though. thanks for bringing back the memory.

... the 'cup-tied Gary' that you refered to Justin was Gary Thompson, I think. Straight from the John Fashanu school of centre forwards: good in the air and at elbowing people but little else. Mind you he got the only goal in a pretty important game against Villa late on that season, from all of about 2 yards if memory serves correct. I think he played and scored in the 8-0 against Southend the following season. Did he ever score another ?

I was a bit young to join in with the drinking and all that it's So much a part of my day out now, though. But the early nineties where we always took a good few thousand wherever we went. I used to be walking up to, Upton Park, White Hart Lane & Highbury and all you could here was "eagleeeeess, eagleessss" You'd walk in and you just couldn't move because it was packed and that was 30mins before kick-off.
There are too many to mention all of them but the special ones for me are
SheffU Play-off- (Me and my mate just kept starting the REdandblue army chant every time it looked like it was going to die a death)and to look around the ground and see EVERY Palace fan joining in was breathtaking.
West Ham- The game that relegated them, we won 2-0. "It must be love, love, love duh der" and "que sera sera..... you're going to Barnsley" and West Ham sung it back with "we're going to Barnsley" It was brilliant.

Boro, championship game- Cris Lehman running around trying to sell his championship T-Shirts before we'd even won it. Trying to get on the pitch after the final whistle. I had my mate pushing me over the fence while a steward was puching me back. I didn't care one way or another I just wanted to get down!
Not forgetting the train back through Eaglescliffe!
Liverpool (palace in scouseland ii or iii or iv)we won 2-1, lost 3-0 and lost 5-0 (I think.) Being 5-0 down and still on our feet waving our scarves round our heads. The scousers faces were a picture.

Loads of favourites but Posh away during the Alan Smith Championship season was pure magic. Dull 1-1 draw but a full terrace behind one goal with endless "ee ay ee ay ee ay oh up the footba...".
I remember as we approached the ground this kid, about 8 or 9, whispers to his dad "There's thousands of them!" in a reverential tone of voice.
Later I read something in a magazine from an exiled supporter in Milan. He described Peterborough away as better than anything experienced at the San Siro.

No doubt about it, the Liverpool cup semi final.

There were three things at/after the end of the game that i particularly remember:

- the Liverpool fans in the away end staying to applaud Palace (you'd never get that from Man U remember how quiet they were when we were winning the other semi final?)

- after we'd sang ourselves hoarse going back to the coaches. I went into the bogs and everyone was just grinning at each other. SOme little kid about six years old says to his Dad "So that proves the 9-0 was a fluke. Everyone pissed themselves (laughing as well)

- the coach on the way back listening to the other game hoping Oldham would win. As the coach neared Selhurst we started dropping people off. There was a chap at the back who nobody had noticed in a Liverpool away shirt (yellow not birdshit grey) who got off at Thornton Heath. Everybody just looked at him and it all went quiet until someone at the front said "bad luck, mate"

Got home and watched it on the telly (we fast forwarded through the first half. Still got the video somewhere. It was Venables who laughed at Allison. Hansen was playing (he was shown head down standing behind Pardew as he celebrated the winner - the pictures made the back pages of all the tabloids and most of the broadsheets and was on the front sheet of either the Times or Indy.

And we all knew we were going to win the final.

Arsenal away, 2-1, 1st October 1994.
Does no-one remember how much it meant at the time?

Millwall away, 4-1, March 1996.
Sweet, sweet, sweet revenge.

Charlton away, 2-1, play-offs, May 1996.
1-0 down, 2-1, a place where you need to sing so you forget how bad your seating is.

Liverpool away, April 1998.
Going down in style, we showed the famous Kop the way. Extremely under-awed by "You'll Never Walk Alone", sides-split by "Exercise Anfield".

What about that day when we all went to Selhurst park to await the outcome of the Mansfield - Wrexham game?

I can't remember whether there was a reserve game or something on that day or did we just hang around in the ground waiting for news?

The atmosphere was unbelievably tense, I do remember that. And I'm fairly certain that some of the players were there and once the news came through that we'd been promoted, they came out into the Director's Box to take a bow.

Anyone know how many were there that day - I'm sure it was a few thousand.

Gooders,

It was a reserve game and half the first team played because they needed to take their mind off the Mansfield wrexham game.

We won 5-0. I seem to remember the attendance that day was about 5000 - although I could be wrong. Usually for reserve games they used to just open up the Old Stand, but for this game they opened up the Holmesdale (and maybe the Whitehorse but I can't remember that bit.)

The beauty at that time was the week before was our last home game against Graham Taylor's Lincoln when we won 4-1, and there was a pitch invasion then, and the players went into the directors box.

After the reserve game there was a pitch invasion and the team (mostly first teamers) went into the directors box.

Then on the following Tuesday was the second leg of the Youth Cup final against Everton or Villa and we won 1-0. Then there was a pitch invasion and the Youth team went into the directors box. Most of that youth team were first teamers as well.

I think the term "Milking it" applies.

Yes indeed Aidan - I haven't been called "Nobby" for years (must be my age?) and there's a far more illustrious Nobby than me on the BBS.

The last game I remember going to with Chris and Paul (I don't recall you being there) was against Millwall. It was during the period when there was always trouble so we decided to stand in the Old Stand Enclosure (shows you how long ago it was).

I think the match ended 1-1. When Palace scored we celebrated (a bit) and it became obvious that we were surrounded by Millwall and then Paul thought he saw the glint of a knife so we all left (before half-time!).

Those were the days (not!).

Sorry everyone but I thought of a couple more.
Wolves away in the first round of the play-offs.
JV had recommended that I come home for the game because the stadium is great and their fans really passionate and noisy.
He wasn't wrong.
Serious atmosphere throughout but when Hopkins ran through to score it was all generated by Palace.
Tottenham away in the FA Cup. Alan Irvine had scored against Forest to put us through into the next round and we went to White Hart Lane and got stuffed.
Last time I remember being on a terrace that wasn't big enough. Proper surges and immortal songs like:
"We've got fore-skins over here"
"Does your rabbi know you're here?" and
"When Jim goes up, to lift the FA Cup, we'll be dead, we'll be dead"
Magic moments

I remember that Spurs game. We were jammed in in the terracing bit and just before start there was a 'wee melee'. When I found my feet
the 4 blokes I went with were all being marched out by the police! But the Palace atmosphere was good that day, agreed.

I've just skipped through this thread and I don't think there is any mention of a BHA away game?!
As a younger fan then these remain as magical days out. Maybe the memory makes the occasions bigger, but these games used to attract 30,000 (home and away) in the 3rd Div.!
The 2 I would mention were; I think it was the cup game when Harkouk came on as sub and scored twice. Anyway I was sitting in their pathetic stand and Palace had one of the biggest mobs I had ever seen (ie of the proportions that Millwall etc used to bring to selhurst) standing in the whole corner next to the fence to their North Stand. The noise was superb. I remember that when you arrived at the Gallstone ground there was always Palace grafitti sprayed over the turnstyle doors!
The other memory was a Boxing Day. Packed in next to them again. A bit of trouble in their end. Swindlehurst/Cannon etc were my heroes but so to was one of the Palace 'boys'. On this occasion he was on his mates shoulders, top off, flashing his muscles and Palace tattoo at 'em. (funnily enough I still see him around the OldStand/Players lounge area - never spoken to him though!)

Which atmosphere would I like to recreate? Semi finals/Finals/play offs/promotions/ ?
The Burnley game takes the buscuit, but Brighton Away was always a great atmoshere.

Unfortunately I only went to one game at the Gallstone.
Can't remember exactly when but Henry Hughton (?) was catching the headlines because in the previous season he had broken some seagulls leg.
Anyhow with about 10 minutes remaining (we were losing, which I'm led to believe was a common occurence with Brighton) some twát opened the gates and about 700-1,000 streamed out into the park round the back of the main stand and all hell broke loose.
On the train on the way home 85% of the Palace fans got off at Hassoks and crossed over to get the next train back to Brighton and when we arrived at E.Croydon the Met met any empty train. They looked very bewildered.
At the station on the way home a supermarket shopping trolley full of lit fireworks was sent hurtling across the concourse towards us.
Then our mob threw everything out of the windows to the strains of "if we win if we fail take it out on British Rail la la ..."
A bloke walks up to me and asks if I mind standing up because he wanted to chuck my seat out.
I met him a few years later on Waterloo bridge, he was on his way home from work at Marvel comics. Maybe he was the incredible hulk or something although I never saw him go green!

The reason the Palace geezer was flashing his muscles was because the PA was playing 'Wheels' the old muscleman tune.

Fortunately, the weather was pretty mild for a Boxing Day.

A great game that comes to mind straight away was up at Villa in the last relegation season. The sun was out and the atmosphere that day was amazing.
It was around the time that all the madness started. The Lombardo/Brolin had just taken over from Coppell, and we couldn't seem to win a game. One of the main memories I have of that day is of our end standing up throughout the whole game, singing non-stop. They got three in the first half - but the more they scored the more we sang. Conga lines were going on and everything. Villa couldn't believe it - they were 3-0 up, but all the noise was coming from our end. And then Jansen scored a wonder goal in the second half.
It was one of those great games where all the stuff that was happening didn't matter, we were just a massive red'n'blue army.

I was there - it was very funny. I bought the video which Liverpool released and watched it only last week, just out of curiosity. We really didn't play that badly, Liverpool were just awesome. The only really annoying things were 1) Geoff Thomas skying the penalty at 0-6 (and Martin Tyler saying it had "all got too much for the Palace captain!"); and 2) the coach getting stuck in a very long jam on the motorway afterwards with a car full of Brighton next to us, who'd just won 5-2 away at Walsall that night, and who gave us some SERIOUS abuse!

Has to be the 9-0 at Anfeild singing wer'e going to score in a minute, cheering everything Palace did, waving to the Liverpool supporters, Booing John Aldridge when they brought him on in his last game to take the penalty in front of the Kop, And in answer to the Liverpool supporter who asked me how come we had been stuffed and were still happy "at least you didn't get 10 past us like you did to Fulham in the cup last week.

On the bad side got off the coach in Thornton Heath to find my car broken into and the stereo nicked. Stayed at my girl freinds and had to buy my paper out side West Croydon station in my Palace strip and received condolences from a Millwall supporter.

Loads of votes of Burnley 79 (and rightly so), but who recalls the penultimate game that season, away to Orient on the previous Saturday. It was the official end-of-season game (Burnley was our game in hand) and Palace could have been promoted that day if either Stoke or the seaweeds lost (I think). My recollection is that a crowd of some 20,000 squeezed into the O's little ground, including an astonishing 15,000 Palace fans!!!!! If correct, this must rank as our biggest ever away support (apart from Wembley, of course). Can anyone verify this?

Anyway, a Swindle goal gave us a 1-0 win against an Orient side loaded with ex-Eagles/Glaziers including the great Jacko in goal and an ageing Alan Whittle. I also remember waiting for what seemed like an eternity after the game before the other results came through, eventually hearing that our rivals had all won. So everything would hinge on the Burnley match the following Friday night, which is where I came in....

At least that's how I remember it. http://209.15.72.34/ubb/wink.gif

Bournemouth away late eighties. 2-0 down after five minutes with Georgie Woods a bit dodgy. Won 3-2, fighting on the terraces and a great train ride home

Also Shrewsbury away in mid eighties. First Sunday game. Phil Barber scored in 2-0 win. Away end built for people no more than 6ft 2.

Or Carlisle when 64 Palace were there. 63 after Gerry got thrown out for swearing amid cries of 'You're just a cockney W@nker'.

Viking I was at that Bournmouth game and it was as you describe a top day out.

As I recall Jim Cannon f****d up for both early goals but we all blamed George Wood poor sod. A great come back and then the police who had been ejecting people all day for no reason tried to lock us in for 25 minutes after the game. The atmosphere was fantastic

Matty

I also remember the Bournemouth game - it was November 1987. We got in late, missing the first goal (scored by Aylott) and just in time to see the second (also scored by Aylott, I think) and right in front of us.

We dominated the rest of the match and were 3-2 up just before half time.

The crowd wasn't big but the atmosphere was fantastic. My abiding memory was the number of chances missed (especially by Phil Barber) in the second half as we attacked toward the away end (i.e. us). Should have been 10-2. Top game. I'd been working down in Bournemouth a few years before then when they played Man U in the cup. Didn't care about the atmosphere. Bournemouth won.

At the end of that season (or was it the one before) went up to Hull, because if we won and Ipswich lost we'd have been in the play offs. Ipswich lost. The atmosphere again was brilliant until we went down 2-0 ten minutes in the match. Then it was crap.

Millwall away in 89-90 season was top, we won 2-1 and the singing was really loud, the result helped send them down. I was only 13 at the time and my mum only let me go because it was my brothers suprise bithday party and they had to get him out of the house. She still doesn't know how close we came to not making it to that party.

31 March 1990. I remember - it was my birthday too!

It wasn't just that it sent them down, the win made it pretty well sure that we'd stay up. The next week (sunday) we went and bit Liverpool 4-3 at Villa Park in the semi.

Oh, it's all coming back now...happy days.

Does anybody remember a match a couple of years before (1988 I think)? End of the season, we were playing Oldham or somebody and needed Millwall or somebody else to lose and the rumour went round the ground that the Millwall or whatever team was losing.

The other one that i've just remembered is the last game of the regular 1988-1989 season. Birmingham came down with 6,000 and we knew there was going to be trouble (because the Standard said so. The old Bill of course didn't believe it). We had to win 5-0 with Man City losing. After 20 mins we were 4-0 up (Wright hattrick and an own goal). Wright was brilliant - the first half was probably the best I've ever seen him. Really fired up, motivating everbody and unstoppable on the pitch. Then the Brum scum invaded the pitch, which held everything up by half an hour, but meant we would finish after Man C. THe game restarted, but with 5 minutes left in their game Man C scored and took the automatic place. we cruised 4-1 into the play offs. The atmosphere before the game and until the City result came through was brilliant and we hurled abuse at the Brummies to boot.

The game at the end of the 1993-1994 season, although we lost 2-0 to Watford was good too. We played exhibition football, all over them, real crowd pleasing stuff, and having won promotion by about 10 points didn't care whether we won or lost. How we lost I just don't know though. A friend of mine, a mad Watford fan (who is the only person I know to have been to every football ground) said the display we gave was the best he'd seen for years.

I dont' know what I've been drinking, but I keep getting these big game flashbacks:

Wimbledon 4-3 in the 80's. Very close game. I think that was the one Geoff Hopkin scored the great own goal - lob over Suckling.

If that wasn't it it was the 4-3 at home v Millwall agin mid 80's.

I also remember a Man city game 7-1 (or 6-1, we lost count). we were standing in the middle of the Whitehorse we laid siege to the goal right in front of us and some chap at the back started shouting "let's have 4!". AS one everybody turned round and shouted at him " but we've scored 4 you daft bugger" or words to that effect.

Sorry to be an anorak but...

0-1 - Hopkin og
1-1 - Wright after a Villa Park style run from Pembo (who can remember the fat gypo Hurlock trying to catch him?)
2-1 - Thomas header from a Wright cross
3-1 - Marky after eddie intercepted a dodgy backpass.

half time

3-2 - The ice cream man
3-3 - Anthrobus

Andy Gray catches the ball, thows it in the air and then palms it on to Wrighty (handball not given!) - Wrighty on to Marky, he's 30 yards out, he smacks it in the WHITEHORSE - it's 4-3......

James Varcoe, You're right, it was Cannon's fault. I remember him staring at Scotland's last resort in an embarrassed way.

Matty, Millwall were playing Blackburn and surprisingly won 4-1 & GLR gave out the wrong score.

At that B'ham home game I saw Batman and Robin run onto the pitch giving it large. Later outside the Wilton, Robin was getting the sh*t kicked out of him whilst being asked the question, 'Where's Batman now you b@stard?'

B'ham away when we won 6-0 was good. Them and Leicester had good atmospheres because of the covered terraces.

At Blackburn in the 80's at Christmas, when you could always rely on winning 2-0, I won 3rd place in a fancy dress competition dressed as Fozzie Bear - prize given by George Wood, my mate won 4th dressed in a skirt. Who won 1st and 2nd?

the end-of-season game against Watford that Matty mentioned was a great atmosphere as we were presented with the 1st Division Championship trophy beforehand and it was a full-house (the last match before the Holmesdale was demolished). My recollection of the match however was that it was a total anti-climax and that Palace were easily beaten in what was probably their worst performance of the season. "Exhibition football" it most definitely wasn't. It says a lot for the standard of fare that your average Watford fan is used to if your friend described it as the "best display he'd seen for years."
Is my memory playing tricks on me ?

JJ
06-04-2000, 08:40 PM
Absolutely not! We were total crap that day, and I reckon it was because they did the presentation before the match instead of after it. Plus everyone in the Arthur Wait enclosure couldn't see it because of the ridiculous sponsors boards behind the players. BTW, the crowd of 28,500 or so was the biggest in the 1st Div that season.

Ash, I agree, prior to the goal the atmo was as tense as i've known it at Selhurst. Fantastic header against is former team and slightly offside to boot.

Another great atmo was the C@ntona Man U game. Before kick off there was an eerie silence, once the whistle went fantastic.
Add this to the game two seasons ago when we lost 2-0(?) and hadn't won at home in the Prem all season. Every Palace fan sung their heart out and shut their glory boys right up.
Brings a tear to the eye, what supporters considering what a p!ss poor season we had at home.

Another good atmosphere was away at Leicester in season 88/89 - we were 3rd and going for the 2nd place but went 2 goals down, only for Ian Wright to be tripped in the box twice, right in front of us. Dave Madden kept his nerve (later to be kept in a bigger game!)and scored both penalties and we drew 2-2.

Man Utd at home in the '97 season (Lombardo) as manager was one of the best at selhurst.

Man U only had the stanard 3,500 in the AW and the rest of the ground was up for it Palace.

We had no chance but the fans got 100% behind the team and there seemed to be a backlash of passion due to the ridiculous situation we had found ourselves in. Non stop singing and taking the piss out of the surrey based manc scum.

Has anyone got the teams for this? Im sure we had a mental midfield of Curcic, Lombaro, Brolin and someone else who got tore apart by Uniteds attacking flare.

I'd like to re-endorse the original poster's suggestion of Ipswich Town away in the late-80's. There were 2 very similar matches; Boxing Day 87/88 and Feb' 88/89. Both matches came after a pretty good run of results with Palace close to or in the promotion places. Both matches had relatively large turn-outs of Palace support and both matches ended in Palace wins.

In those days, the away fans were put in a what could only be described as a cage, behind one of the goals at Portman Road. The terrace had a low roof that kept the noise in and Ipswich's most vocal fans were in a similar enclosure, just to our left. It created an amazing atmosphere; everybody in the away end couldn't help but join in with the singing and with Palace winning what were both vital games, they were 2 of the best away days of the 80's.

The only other one that comes close was the Good Friday win at Watford in 88/89. It was an absolute must-win match, as virtually every match was from Easter until the final match that season. Another big Palace turn-out on a terrace under a low roof and a vital Palace win. It was the previous Saturday's win at home to Sunderland that had kept the feint promotion hopes alive; including that game we won 11 of our last 15 matches. We could have done with a run like that a few weeks ago (too late now).

I remember Stoke away when we won the title in '94, we packed out the away end and the atmosphere was brilliant. I'll never forget that day as it was my first away game.

Everton away, first game in '97 I think, Lombardo's first game. Sun, beers and Palace winning. Great turnout and support from Palace.

The 5-0 defeat at Anfield in the Worthington Semi. Non stop singing from Palace.

A couple of the stand out home games for me would be from the administration period. Palace fans united, the atmosphere against Blackburn and Sunderland were both special.

3) Sheff U play-off final. My 2nd time at Wembley, at the age of 6. I still remember most of the day like it was yesterday.
2) Cardiff play-off final. I was hoarse from 12.30 onwards. Our train pulled in at 9.30 and from that moment the day was perfect. Was it ever a doubt? Hands up who remembers singing the songs after the match :)
1) Sunderland semi-final. What a game. What a crowd. What a moment. Loved every minute of that victory.

Honourable mentions must go to
Watford last year (2-0 to us),
the recent Charlton games.
Burnley 5-0 last year.
Liverpool (a) Worthington Cup semi 5-0
Southampton in the Prem
the Brighton games.

We really need the atmosphere back.

If I could go back and repeat a whole day of my life, it would be Cardiff. The cheers, beers and tears made for a great 17 hour day =)

My choice for the Palace game with the best ever atmosphere during my time supporting Palace, granted not as long as most of you, however the game that sticks out for atmosphere in my mind was the Charlton relegation match May 2004. The joy when Freedman dinked it into the net to suddenly give us hope from nowhere and to send the away end mad. Then the AJ penalty and furthermore Freedman almost scoring again in the dying seconds and if he had done it would have sent the away end into overdrive and im sure there would have been some sort of pitch invasion come the full time whistle.

The joy when Freedman dinked it into the net to suddenly give us hope from nowhere and to send the away end mad. Then the AJ penalty and furthermore Freedman almost scored again in the dying seconds and if that goal had gone in it would have sent the away end into overdrive and im sure there would have been some sort of pitch invasion come the full time whistle.

Good shout OSL. That was about as tense as any Palace game i've been to.

One of the best at Selhurst was the League Cup quarter final against Chelsea that took place in the middle of an unbelievably torrential downpour in January 1993. How the referee allowed it to go ahead is an enduring mystery. Our second started with a shot that literally got stuck in a puddle and Chris Coleman had to aquaplane from the penalty spot to where the ball had come to rest a couple of yards short of the line to finish it off.

An eventual 3-1 win for Palace but the weather didn't dampen the atmosphere; the crowd was basically a 50/50 split between Palace & Chelsea (28,510 of them). I was in the Old Stand near the Whitehorse Lane End and even there, when Chelsea scored (to bring it back to 1-2 I think) the vast majority of the people around me stood and cheered so I assume they had the most of that stand along with the usual 2 Homesdale Compounds as well as all the usual places that they used to turn up in those days.

But unlike the usual situation whenever they came or Millwall took over the place and most Palace fans sat on their hands and kept their mouths shut, nobody was hiding their allegiance that night and the noise all-night was fantastic. I'm sure it had something to do with the rain; everybody thought sod-it, we're soaked to the skin, what worse can happen? I guess the soaking kind of sedated Chelsea's neanderthal element too and everybody sung up regardless of their allegiance. A great night in just about the last season that the League Cup actually seemed to matter.

Sheffield United - Play Off Final (last 20 minutes)
Burnley - 1979

ManUre - Relegation match 1998 - we were down but nobody cared...

:lux: I remember it well - I was one of the 15% who stayed on the train :o . But I do remember Hove Station after the game and seeing lightbulbs from the train being thrown at the weeds on the other platform and laughing as one weed who was gesticulating at us getting nabbed by a copper from behind (pun intended :moo: ) He never knew anything about it and we could see exactly what was coming!

For me - apart from the great ones I've actually been to (semi v Liverpool and 1st final v Man U, 1979 v Burnley, Holmesdale last stand v Watford, play off final s v Sheff U and West Ham, my favourite obscure one was Tranmere away in the admin years.

We'd just stayed up the previous week (Ashley Cole goal and Super Matt Jansen NOT celebrating his goal for Blackburn). It was one of the few games where my ears were ringing after the game - 2 goals in 3 mins from M and M, a brilliant defensive performance by David Woozley and Ashley Cole (including an overhead clearance off the line) and a party atmosphere amongst the Palace faithful. Steve Coppell threw his jacket into the crowd at the end and found it rather amusing that the Palace fan who caught it went through the pockets!!!

Aa Wallace and Gromit would say... a grand day out.

Two atmospheres that stand out and have probably already been mentioned were the 6-0 smacking at Loftus Road and 5-0 beatdown at Anfield. Constant chanting, sometimes the occasional pause and slight sigh when we conceeded but then straight back to EVERY eagle being noisy for the duration. We even sang "You'll never walk alone" louder than the home support at the final whistle!

So many to list, mostly away matches:-
Villa Park (Semi) one of the best days of my life. (Only one of them dear !)
Leeds away (75/76 cup run)
Sunderland (75/76 cup run)
Chelsea (75/76 cup run)
Wrexham away (About 75, we won 4-2 scoring two goals in last minute and we had to win by two clear goals to go up.)
QPR away not long after Venables cleared us out the first time."Burridge took a kicking"
Burnley (Champs 52000 etc)
Infact most away games.....although the atmosphere at home just gets better.

Yes for me It would be Leeds away, 75/76 that was something else. We actually shell shocked the European Champions, team and supporters... which for a club 2 divisions below them was an unbelievable achievement. Probably the Ultimate "Roy of the Rovers" Palace moment.

I always felt that Burnley game the atmosphere for most of the game was pretty tense.

I also reckon Palace fans put in a fantastic effort at Cardiff in that relegation game in 74....over 2000, to a Wednesday night away game, that was a fantastic atmosphere as well.

in more recent times would have to be arsenal at home a few years ago, 1-1. selhurst was electric that evening.

i remember the trip to burnley the following season, when we had already made the play-offs with 3 or 4 games to go, for the comedy value. 'there's only onnnneeeeee jonny macken, onnnnnnneeeeeee jonny macken!' and 'we've got an england striker, on the bench, we've got an england on bench!' brilliant. probably one of the best away games i've been to.

The Swindon playoff has been mentioned a few times. There was something very very intense about that night, huge noise, maybe driven by a desperate need for success after the Mullery years (even though we had slowly been improving for a few years by 1989).

I reckon that's one of the few times I can remember when the Palace crowd actually "scared" the opposition - Swindon just seemed to freeze. Great night.

Any of the Goldstone games.

The older ones first

Orient Away god know when but we were going up, recon about 1980?
Swindon away the play off
Blackburn away and missing the train home as it was too full, got in 7am!
Forest away simod cup
Boro away simod cup (or Zenith!!) about 400 of us, very scary!!
Villa Park obviously and Duke of York on final day

The middle years

Stockport away----how good was that?
Sheff Utd at Wembley
Brighton 5-0 for the result and Sir Steve

Recent

Coventry away was amazing play off year
Cardiff play off
Arse at home premiership
Spurs at home premiership
Man U away with their missed penalty

But despite all the memories, the thing that piss%s me more than anything is that Clowns away this year was the first time in 20 years that I've had THAT feeling, that electricity and we promptly played so badly, with no spirit that it turned what could have been a very special night on it's arse...

Also when sir stevie threw his jacket into the masses at tranmere was a good - un as well.

Anyone go to the last reserve game at selhurst park in 1976/77 (i think) on the day we got promoted? Palace had beat wrexham 4-2 away mid week and had to wait to see if the results went our way to clinch that 3rd promotion spot. Most of the first team could not bear the tension so played for the reserves including Rachid Harkouk, barry silkman etc.... So many turned up (thousands I think) while we waited for the result and had one big party on the pitch at final whistle when scores were confirmed. Fantastic magical atmosphere to rival all others mentioned above (if that counts)...

I’ll never forget the Sheffield United Playoff atmosphere, it’s weird I can’t really remember much of the day. Uncles and cousins had come down from Newcastle and Aberdeen for the game and it was great to see them, the sunshine was top too.

I can’t really remember much of the atmosphere for much of the game, but the one thing that sticks in my mind is the second half being almost constant singing. The last minute goal at the end just felt perfect! I can’t even remember the final whistle.

Another that I’ll always remember was the atmosphere at the home game to Arsenal during the last Premiership season. To give it a bit of context, I’d just started going out with my girlfriend at the time and it coincided with a turn in the results, a 2-0 win a home to Fulham, 3-0 home to West Brom a 2-1 League Cup win away at the Valley and a win away at Brum. The only blemish being a defeat away at Bolton (but I didn’t go to that game so it doesn’t count in my books).

Then came Arsenal, coincidently my girlfriends family were all staunch Arsenal fans and I was trying my hardest to convert her to Palace... so there had been a fair bit of banter going into the game. A big match under the floodlights always seems to bring out the best in Palace so I was confident we could get something. It was bonfire night too.

The atmosphere was buzzing, I remember every single tackle being cheered like crazy. Even when we went a goal down I remember the crowd going silent for only a couple of seconds before starting off again.

Aki’s equaliser was crazy, he’d been playing brilliantly and was chasing every single Arsenal player around like a madman. He seemed to be everywhere. I’m not sure if I’ve ever been so happy to see a player score a goal as I was when Aki slid that one in.

I think the thing I loved about the atmosphere in the game was that the belief was there both in the players and the fans. We really believed that we were going to stay up.

West Ham circa 90-91 or 91-92, the year that the spammers went down.

Standing packed into the old away end which had no crush barriers in the upper last third - great for surging - and singing 'must be love' by Madness.

It was absolutely baking in there and we were all swaying madly in a great huddle of sweat (ooh er) until old Bill came in and ejected about 10 indiscriminate fans in an attempt to calm us down.

Thinking about it I havenet been to WHL or Upton park since those days, and I'm sure it because I know that I would be so dissapointed with the sterility of seats compared to what I had experienced before.

Something must have gone wrong somewhere with the tickets because I remember the Holmesdale totally heaving that night.

Perhaps the missing fans had left the stadium as a result of fainting as a result of Rudi Hedman's majestic performance?

Yes, I was at that game. 1987 I think, as it was the season that Clive Allen got 49 goals for them and they got to the final and lost to Coventry. It's actually the only game at WHL that I've been to that we lost - every time we've played them in the league since 1989 we've either won or drawn, even in seasons when we were relegated.

Best ever atmosphere during my time of supporting Palace has to be the 1989 play off final second leg against Blackburn (H). We made a heck of a lot of noise that day and several Blackburn players admitted afterwards that they found the atmosphere intimidating that day.

Running a close second to that is the 1997 play off final against Sheffield United. Again, the noise made that day, particularly during the second half, literally 'sucked' the ball into the net. The support seemed to propel the whole team on, and the win more than made up for the previous year's gutting play off final against Leicester. All those demons were laid to rest that day in 1997 :lux:

Been to quite a few of the most memorable games over the last few years,76 Cup run,Burnley 79, Liverpool semi 1990, all play offs, Cup Final.... but the Sunderland Play Off semi at Selhurst Park had an electric atmosphere which came out of nowhere...awesome

The Sheff Utd playoff win was amazing..

Every Palace fan there helped with the goal, it was like none of us wanted a repeat of the year before and realised we'd been edgy and silent for the last moments of the Leicester match

i wish Palace fans would realise the impact of they can have on more occassions!

We certainly had more of an impact on the game than Jeff Hopkins ;)
Yep, him as well ;)

Man U, December 72', 5-0, cracking atmosphere.

Probably only about my 7-10th game attended at Selhurst, what a day.

Actually many of the 70s evening games under the candles, the mid week after we made the S-F we played Hereford or Port Vale, Mar 76 I guess.

Selhurst was good in those days for night matches, the crowds were quite often much better mid week than at the weekends, whereas the opposite seems to be true now.

One that stands out in recent years, is the 0-5 LC SF 2nd leg at Anfield, the Palace support that night was awesome, 5,000 who sangs their hearts out.
