I've just done serious road trip up the East coast of Aus going inland a few times and to keep us awake and singing (yes singing) we chose our music carefully. Not my normal choice but considering the country and scenery, I don't think we could have had a better selection.

John Denver Collection
Neil Diamonds Greatest Hits
Elvis's Greatest Hits
Tammy Wynette Best loved hits

and my favourite
Johny Cash's Greatest Hits

Have any of you done a long road trip for the hell of it and can you remember what kept you going?

I'll get my cowboy boots...

Yeah sorry about that, I really fancied it but we we're on a tight scheldule and one of our friends that we were visiting had a tragic accident which put everything out a bit.

I'm now sitting here wide awake at home due to jet lag (only been in country 3 hrs), so if you want to crack open a tinny we can have a virtual beer, I'm about to in an effort to sleep.

Sounds good to me - except for the John Denver - I think that might have made me puke rather than help keep me going.

It's nice to see someone appreciating country music for a change too!

I've not done a long road trip like that (did you pop in and see my sister-in-law in Newcastle BTW?) but regularly drive 220 miles to London and then back and the right choice of music is important even then. I would tend to go more for what some actually call "driving music" ie Springsteen, The Cars, Tom Petty and The Travelling Wilburys - plus some good upbeat soul classics and so on.

Tak, I am surprised you did not pick up some country and western at the petrol stations. When I have been there that is all they have sold.
Bet you are glad to be in the beautiful weather of London?
We had a looped cassette of catatonias Road rage.

Start the same trip minus the Sydney to Brisbane bit on Wednesday, though we have five weeks to meander up there - I find a nice bit of didge music pretty atmospheric.

Ash, get yourself out to Undara National Park and stay in the old railway carriges (see the sunset and the bats coming out of the caves at dusk), don't do an organised trip just drive up yourself, same with Cape Tribulation but if the rains get going you may need to swap to a 4WD.

As it's off season you can also negotiate really good rates for some of the nicer places to stay if you do it yourself rather than use an agent, we did and were pleasantly suprised.

Country Roads take me home, West Virginia...

Ash,going to the Whitsundays?
Saw a deal on the net at club crocodile, accomodation is in apartment types but but 5 night at their place at Airlie beach and you get a free 5 nights at their island,Long Island out in the whitsundays.
Worked out at about 12 quid a night roughly with your breakfast thrown in.Might not be your cup of tea but Airlie beach is alright if you want a rowdy night out.

Country (forget the Western) is also my long drive choice, and the Man in Black would be at the top of the list. Close though are the Flying Burrito Brothers and maybe some Lee Hazlewood, then branching off into Neil Young and The Band for a bit of Americana. Dylan's Nashville Skyline album's a winner, too.

Kids Travelling Songs Vols. One and Two. (featuring 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes', which can be dangerous if the driver joins in.)
Sesame Street Favourites (feat. 'Rubby Ducky you're the one, you make bath time lots of fun, rubber ducky, I'm awfully fond of you, boop, boop, boop be do,' as well as a poignant, part-Spanish version of 'Sing a Song'.)
Dinosaurs (feat. that old conundrum set to jaunty music - 'Whatever Happened to the Dinosaurs?')

We love listening to the Dixie Chicks when driving. It makes us really happy and reminds us of driving along huge open roads in Texas. Now, the Texans really know their country music. George Strait is quite nice too.

John Peel famously had to pull over to the side of the road when he heard Teenage Kicks.

So, as a slight branch off the track from the mainstreet running through this thread, has anyone else had a similar experience. For me, it was Nick Cave's Into Your Arms.

I don't believe in an interventionist God either.

Couple of jaw-droppers that spring to mind are:

Just Kissed My Baby, by The Meters
Teenage Riot, by Sonic Youth
We Came Along This Road, by Mr Cave again

John Martyn - Sapphire
EBTG - Love not money
1000 Mexicans - Diving for pearls
Bonnie Raitt - Sweet forgiveness
Robert Palmer - compilation of tracks from his earliest albums Sneaking Sally through the Alley; Some People can do what they like; Double Fun; Secrets and Clues.

So, no petrol then. Should be a Country and Western Station then. Or would they call that a Ranch?:o
