View Full Version : Your all time favourite palace player

SIMON OF SELHURST

Who is your all time favourite? Mine has to be the great Cliff Holton who joined us in 62/63 when we were in the **** at the bottom of the old division 3, he was an old-fashioned centre forward who had played for Arsenal, sadly he passed away four years ago.

My all-time favourite was our very own Stevie Kember, but I also have a soft spot for Nige - Englands No. 1 keeper.

Don Rogers.

Dodger

I know he wasn't probably the greatest, but I always liked Eddie McGoldrick. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie - oh look he's skipped past two players and then fallen over.

You could never fault the great Phil Barber simply for his commitment and workrate.

Being a relative youngster, I'd have to chose between Ian Wright, Mark Bright and Nige, with Wrighty just coming out on top as my all time favourite.

Peter Taylor - the reason I first went to watch Palace as those may have read in the "Why I'm an Eagle" threads.

Pure class and played for England whilst being a 3rd division player.

Small number

John Jackson for the way he kept us in the old division 1 for 4 seasons. Then Kenny Sansom and Wrighty.

Nigel Martyn Ð he has been the best keeper in the country for more than a decade. It's a disgrace that Seaman has been and still is preferred for England. Had Martyn played for Arsenal he would have 80 caps by now. There's no way Nigel would have been beaten on his near post so easily as Seaman was (twice) by Holland in that WC qualifier in 1994.

Vince Hilaire Ð a super talent who should have achieved so much more with his career. The prince of flair

Kevin Mabbutt Ð the early 1980s equivalent of the US cavalry, always riding to the rescue at the vital moment

Dave 'the Mod' Madden Ð classy, tough, spiteful where necessary (or indeed unnecessary) and the taker of great penalties. He made all the difference to the promotion run in of 1989 and in ten minutes at the end of the Cup Final replay managed to show what might have been had he played from the start instead of Supa Al. He completely embarrassed Bryan Robson with one moment of pure skill. Such a shame that, for whatever reason, he didn't become a big star for us.

Also Phil Barber Ð particularly in the later years he was often a target for some sections of the crowd, but he was a loyal servant to the club, a star of our rise from the despair of the dark ages to FA Cup glory and the great years in the old first division. He scored some great goals too. The archetypal unsung hero.

This is impossible...

Harkouk - no wait,

Rogers - no wait,

Martyn - no wait,

Hilaire - no, wait

Wright - no, wait

Sansom - no, wait

Taylor (not Gareth, in case anyone was wondering)...

Just too many to choose from I'm afraid.

PeterH
28-04-2000, 09:47 PM
Too many. In very recent years people I have really liked have been Rodger, Lombardo and Martyn.

At the moment Fan, I think he has played well this season and it must have been so easy for him to leave when his mate went home. Disd we ever get the money for that?

Attilio Lombardo, just ahead of Wrighty and countless others.

Anyone else with a soft spot for Gareth Davies?

Standing in the Arthur Wait in the late eighties singing Ian Wright, Ian Wright, Ian Wright, ooh aah. He was the best, gave his all, pre-season friendlies, the lot.

In recent history, Palace have also had a lot of unsung heroes who have made a real impact for one or two seasons - Paul Stewart, Iain Dowie, Kenny Brown etc. Loved them all.

Definite soft spot for Leif Anderson (we used to say we'd be better off with Pamela Anderson) cracking own goal vs. Charlton in the play-offs, definitely gave us our best laughs at Selhurst.

Wrighty, Martyn, Lombardo and then Rodger. Geoff Thomas and Ninja are there somewhere as well!

I'd like in a few years to be able to add the name of Ashley Cole, but we have to buy him off the Arse first!

Matty

Too difficult to name one:

Ability, dependability - Nigel Martyn

Skill, excitement - Ian Wright, Peter Taylor, Rachid Harkouk

Class - Lombardo

Goals, nice man - Mark Bright

But my first ever favourite was Gerry Queen

One of the people at work went to a dinner on saturday and was sat next to John Jackson's daughter. She's a huge Palace fan and apparently wouldn't shut up about the brilliant game against Blackburn.

Needless to say he (my colleague)is a Seaweed fan!

Has to be Nigel Martyn.

I liked Kevin Mabbutt - one of the few bright spots of watching Palace in the early to mid 1980's.

god this is difficult -

actually i'm lying, its f*cking easy:

the one and only palace god - the saddest thing was we only had a season and a half to admire him -

attilio lombardo.

Ian Wright clearly the most skillful player seen in a Palace shirt.. although Lombardo runs a close second. Martyn, Cannon, Sansom, and Mark Bright

Nigel Martyn - pure class, on and off the field.

Kevin Mabbutt - we relied so much on him and he always came up with goals and perfomances, even though he played through injury.

Supa Al - the original and still the best. How many class keepers did he score against that season?
