To celebrate Peter Taylor's promotion to Division One, with Gillingham, a look back to his Palace days...

Peter Taylor joined Palace from Southend United for £100,000, in October 1973. He made 142 appearances for Palace, before joining Tottenham in 1976, for £200,000.

In March 1975 I saw Peter scoring against Huddersfield Town in a dour and dull 3. Division match. (see pic above)

It was a scrappy goal but Peter saw fit to celebrate as if he'd scored a Cup Final winner. He ran from the corner of the Old Stand / Whitehorse Lane across to the middle of the Wait Stand in order to get a standing ovation (while play had already been resumed).

Peter Taylor - superstar.

I've got his shirt, nah nah, nah nah nah!

Actually, I'd like to think it was his, as it is exactly the same as the one he's got on in the crouching pose, but it was probably only worn by the reserve number 11, or a youth team player!

seeing Paul Hinshelwood listed at Number 10 in that line-up reminds me of what a great centre forward he was ... not ("we want Whittle"). Can't knock him as Number 2 though.

What a player 'Doris' was. Venables was fat even then, but Dave Swindlehurst, he was one of the greats...

Was Peter Taylors debut away at Oxford on a bone hard pitch? If it wasnt his debut I think it was one of his early games for us and I remember he ran the show.

The greatest P Taylor moment...Chelsea away, 14/02/76, free kick. I jumped up and then remembered where I was.

I was there in the north stand aged 15 "Kung Fu" kicks and all what a game.

It reads "Shove this one up your arses you Chelsea c**ts"

Or it might read
"The Chelsea "wall" is stunned, Peter Bonetti beaten...as Peter Taylor thunders Palace's winner"

I can't believe Ron Harris and his chopper were still playing in that Chelsea team. Others playing that day included Charlie Cooke, Mickey Droy, Steve Wicks, Gary Locke, and a mop haired Ray Wilkins.

Cheers Selhurst great memories.I was at Selhurst when Peter made his England under 23 debut against Czechoslovakia. He scored Englands first goal in a 3-1 win fairly early in the game.Anyone else with memories of that game? Apart from Peter the only other players I remember playing for England that night were Steve Perryman and Alan Stehenson from Burnley in goal.

I was there too. Can't remember a thing about it except possibly the crowd was about 20,000.

Things stick in my mind from that day:

1. What a crap ground Stamford Bridge was.
2. Harris bringing Taylor down from behind in the first minute.
3. Taylor's free kick.
4. Enormous numbers of Chelsea fans vaulting over the dividing fence to congratulate us and shake our hands immediately following Taylor's goal?????????
5. What a huge ******* Mickey Droy was. I actually thought you could see the ground vibrate as he ran.
6. The sheer joy of turning Chelsea over 3-2 in the FA Cup.

Plus:

7. Horses on the terraces.
8. Me almost losing my scarf. (As a young innocent 16 year old).
9. Chelsea fans on the West Stand roof.
10. Rather mysteriously the North Bank emptying after half time.
11. Allison walking towards the Shed and predicting a 3-0 win.
12. Someone throwing a tennis ball at him as he showed the "thumbs down".
13. Rather unfortunatly finding myself right next to the "thin blue line" on the North Bank.
14. Travelling back home with my Chelsea scum mates, on top of the world.

Ah, memories ..........

I missed Taylor's U23 game against the Czechs, but a year later I was at the game against Portugal where he volleyed the first at the Holmesdale End after 5 minutes. England won 2-0, it was my first game at Selhurst, and I went back to watch him the following saturday playing for Palace in the first round of that Chelsea beating cup run.

While he was at Palace, Peter Taylor gained four England Under-23 caps (two of them in matches staged at Selhurst Park) and scored in every game. He also won four full England caps while at Palace, and scored on his first two appearances for the national side.

10. Rather mysteriously the North Bank emptying after half time.

I can remember that after the fighting started there was a continuous stream of people being 'escorted' by the Met down to the halfway line and out. I would love to know how many were actually ejected from the ground that day , it must have been hundreds.

Watching Match of the Day that eve was wonderful - and who remembers Jimmy Hill's analysis of the crowd trouble and the Kung Fu Kick! I think it got an Action replay!

I saw that footage again a few years ago on a documentary, and there's a bit where some bloke's hat goes flying one way when he met a punch full on as he was running at someone.

Missing a penalty against Millwall at the Holmesdale end, ensuring that our huge lead at Christmas for promotion out of Div3 was well and truly blown.

Rumour afterwards was that he deliberately missed so we wouldnt get killed by the other teams friendly supporters. As I ran for my life down Southern Avenue I would take issue with that.

Probably no photographic evidence and I'll probably need Ruskin Old Boy to verify my memory's not playing tricks, but....

Does anyone remember a home game against, I think Wrexham mid 70's? Palace awarded a free kick near the corner of Holmesdale and New stand. The ball was dead so to pick it up, Taylor sort of squeezed it between his feet and it just popped up and he caught it. He got a massive cheer so he put it straight down on the grass and did it again!

Did it really happen or has the Alzheimers finally caught up with me?
