Just switched on and our old favourite Ian Wright was on, with Steve Coppell making an appearence from a fund raiser.
Ron Nodes was there too.....????

This was a rerun from December and I remember that there was quite a lot of comment about it at the time.
I've just watched it for the first time and it's hard not to accept that he came across unbelievably well on the programme. I know we've all sorts of reasons for not liking the guy but you can't deny his genuineness and have to be impressed with what he's done for good causes etc.
Steve Coppell could have got more of a mention, of course, though it was noticeable that Wright mentioned Steve before Aspel did. It was surprising that Ron Noades was there wasn't it. I would have thought that Noades might have doubted whether Ian would turn up on such a chilly December evening.
My overriding reaction to the programme was not about Ian Wright at all but more a feeling of great upset about what has happened to our club since those hey-days of the early 1990s.

If you'd seen the last 20 minutes, SmithEagle, you'd still have missed all the Palace stuff!

Palace were skipped over, the focus was much more on Arsenal. Anyone notice Wrighty laugh when Coppell said he should finish his career at Palace?

I have to say, CG, that I didn't interpret the laugh in the way that you appear to have done.

Fortunately just happened to switch on the TV at the beginning of this - having missed the original showing and been annoyed when everyone was talking about it!! To be fair as said above, Ian did mention Steve Coppell before they got round to that bit, as well as the 2 guys from his hackney marshes team talking about palace picking him up. The Palace bit them talking about the 9-0 to introduce John Barnes - and they showed his 2 goals in the cup final and spoke to Mark Bright. Steve Coppell was obviously geniune in his offer for wrighty to return to Palace!! and I think Ian's laugh was not sarcastic (although a few background ones might have been about Stevie's comment of 'finishing on a high' - no doubt meant to be tongue in cheek anyhow).

Anyone seeing the programme (as we did ) would have to comment on how IRRELEVANT the whole thing was in terms of Wright's career.
It featured very little in terms of Palace. Coppell on video only, two BRIEF clips of the cup goals, and numerous shots of Wright scoring for the Arse.
Already in the studio at the start were Arsene Wenger, Ian Walker(!?), Les Ferdinand (!?), Mark Bright and David Seaman.
Walk on guests included John Barnes (!?) and Paul Ince (!?) - very representative of his careeer as you can see

Why should there been such greats as Paul Brush, brian Sparrow represented as well?

Does Ron Noades only have one tie? I'd always assumed that it was his lucky match-day tie before, but now .... The suit looked familiar too!

I think the idea was that they were friends of Ian's - the programme isn't just about his career at Palace - it's his life!!! - I think we are all probably a little biased about how much Palace we would have liked to have seen on there!!

Wrighty told me last year that the reason he wouldn't come back to Palace was that when he left us to go to the Arse, some of our more well educated fans went round his mums house, broke in, vandalised it and wrote racist and abusive remarks all over the walls. Left a bitter taste in his mouth and he found it very hard to take. His mum can't forgive and forget either. I dont think the money thing ever entered the equation after that.
Maidstoned Eagle: Thanks for the post - I didn't know that. It never ceases to amaze me how braindead some fans can be. It was a shame this was never publisised more, as I am sure his family would have recieved a great deal of apologies and support from the less fu*ked up amongst us.
I despair at the fuc*wits who do such things. No doubt probably some of the same who ended up causing grief in Belgium/Holland. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/frown.gif

Fair point. Shame he didn't have make many friends out of ex Palace players.
Good show though, just wished it had mentioned how many goals he scored for Palace.

I was glad that I caught that last night. I was just about to turn over as I usually do when This is Your Life comes on when I sussed out it was Wrighty.
I thought he came across really well, humble and grateful for the opportunities he has been given in his life.
It's amazing how different people interpret things. I certainly didn't feel his laugh was aimed at Palace.
I don't care what anyone says, Ian Wright will always be one of my footballing heroes and I still wish he had chosen to finish his career at Palace. However, the way things have gone in the last 18 months, looks like he was (w)right to choose Burnley.

Personally I found the whole thing depressing. As expected Palace was really skipped over.
Who was the big guy next to Noades wearing an adidas anorak?

Quite possibly - but it would have made for a rounder perspective on his career though !

Peter Prentice, who was the bloke at Palace who signed/spotted him from Greenwich Borough........
I thought it was a bit of a farce really. Palace deserved a bigger mention, as he did just as much at this club as he did at the Arse (in relative terms).
I also wasn't sure what to make of the bit where Coppell asked him to come back, as I am sure Steve was hoping Ian would pick up the phone after the show. It still annoys me slightly that Wright chose money over the chance of coming back and trying to save the club that started his career, and where the fans worshiped him.
He is supposed to be a nice guy, but there always seems to be contradictions around the man.
As for Ian Walker and Ferdinand etc., they were their from his England days I am sure. Apparently the Arsenal/Tottenham boys always got along quite well at England level.
