Millwall's out-of-contract defender Scott Fitzgerald is in talks
with Crystal Palace boss Steve Coppell about a move across south
London.
Fitzgerald, 30, is available on a free transfer after turning down
Millwall's offer of a new one-year deal.
He said:
"My agent has spoken to Steve Copppell and I am interested to hear
what they have to say.
"I have also spoken to Colchester but I am not sure about that
move. I wanted a two-year contract at Millwall but they are only
willing to give me one."

How about we give him a trial in the Millwall friendly but tell him he has to score then run in front of the Palace fans and kiss the badge on his shirt http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif
He must be knocking on, he had a number one in 1967 with If You're Going To San Francisco (Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair).
Don't know how that idea went down with the Millwall mutantsÉ

No no no Tony, that was Scott Mackenzie.

Surely the Wooze can do a better job than Fitzgerald ? We should have nothing to do with these types of donkeys, freebie or no freebie.

Almost there, Adrian.
F.Scott Fitzgerald was the writer.....

The original Scott Fitzgerald was one of the world's all time greatest drunks (as well as a brilliant writer). He would fit in quite well with some teams then.
Alternatively could we team him up with Craig Shakespeare and Dean Wordsworth?

And Wordsworth of course will be playing against Palace (for Crawley) on Saturday.
Speaking of players scoring against their previous sides and celebrating in front of their fans - does anyone remember the laugh when Andy Roberts scored in the friendly against Millwall about three years ago and run in front of them celebrating ?? http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/supergrin.gif
Then cue songs of "thank you very much for Andy Roberts ..." http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

It looks to me like he will only be cover for the first team, If you look at how thin our squad is at the back, then if he costs nothing and his wage demands are reasonable (he can't be on that much at Millwall I don't see the harm in giving him a contract.
Look around the leagues and see if oyu can see a quality defender at a reasonable price. I think that at the moment siging fitzgerald is probably a good move
I agree. We need more defenders in order to make through a long and hard season. Even our reserves are a bit streched at the moment aren't they?? Maybe he can play a bit of left back as well.
By the way, didn't Fitzgerald use to play for Wimbledon a few years back?

He did Kai.
If, at 30 years of age, he's played for Wimbledon and Millwall he's hardly going to be any great shakes is he?
However, if he signs, let's give the guy a chance eh?
One part of me thinks this is a disappointing possible signing, the fact that his only other choice of club to go to is Colchester merely empathisis this.
However I do sort of see Milkstocks point as well. With the squad so depleated and small at the moment we do need to bring in some new blood, even if they are not necessarily first team material. So a few players on free transfers maybe is one way of doing this. I don't see Fitzgerald as a first team regular however as Woozleys surely a better choice.

It's disappointing to hear we are being linked with a player of this calibre. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/frown.gif

Why don't we bring back Bowry and Ricky Newman ????
Honestly though, I reckon we should give him a chance if he does come to us. We do need some squad players.

We need to have a squad of about 20/22 players so we need players like Fitzgerald to have as cover and push for a place in the team. A Millwall mate of mine says that he's a very hard working player and quite good in the air,so i think he could turn out to be useful as Linighan's legs go and Woozley settles in.
FITZGERALD IN PALACE TALKS

MILWALL defender Scott Fitzgerald is in talks with Crystal Palace manager Steve Coppell over making a short move to Selhurst Park.
The 30-year-old stopper has been a regular at The New Den since moving there in 1997 after eight years with Wimbledon, but was disappointed when The Lions only offered him a one-year deal .
"My agent has spoken to Steve Coppell and I am interested to hear what they have to say," Fitzgerald said.
"I have also spoken to Colchester but I am not sure about that move. I wanted a two-year contract at Millwall but they are only willing to give me one."
The former Don would be Palace's third signing since they were taken out of liquidation on July 5th, after the capture of Tommy Black and Julian Gray earlier this week.
Quite right Adrian, it was Scott McKenzieÉ my memory is failing
If you can rememebr the 60s, they say, you werent really thereÉ

I find it quite strange that people are slagging him off when he hasn't even signed for us yet and the fact that no-one even knows anything about him!
Has everyone already lost faith in SC's ability to pick up lower league players?

Whilst I'm prepared to see Fitzgerald play on a regular basis before criticising him (remember how you all feel about Austin now ?) - I think we can do better.
There are a number of second/third division up and coming players that could do a job for us it Steve really wants to sign another central defender, but then as I have pointed out previously - we do need to sign a few older heads to go with the large number of young players that we already have.

This morning's South London Press quotes Millwall manager Keith Stevens.. he says Fitzgerald has agreed a new 1 year deal at the Den. Jordan's also quoted as saying Palace are close to possibly signing or taking on loan a defender, sometime next week.

Nope.. no mention of Forssell or the identity of the defender. But Coppell's quoted as saying he wants a specialist left back.
Pure specualtion of course, but as the nature of the deal discussed sounds similar to the negotiations with Chelsea regarding Forssell (ie they want to loan him, we want to sign him), I wonder if the player concerned is Cole ?

Will, like the Advertiser was there any news about when Forssell may be returning, the Tizer said maybe in the next few days?
Also any clues as to who the defender is or maybe the SLP meant they were close to signing a striker on-loan i.e. Forssell
