Palace boss Smith set for massive transfer windfall

CRYSTAL Palace chairman Simon Jordan has given manager Alan Smith a vote of confidence - and is ready to hand him another £4 million for new players.

CRYSTAL Palace chairman Simon Jordan (pictured) has given manager Alan Smith a vote of confidence - and is ready to hand him another £4 million for new players.

The Eagles have slipped to fifth from bottom in Division One and Jordan is ready to let Smith turn to Europe and splash his cash.

He said: “We’ve been unlucky in some games but a cloud has descended over the club in the last 10 days and performances have deteriorated rapidly.

“I want to make it clear that Alan Smith has my unequivocal support.

“Overall he has taken things in the right direction in terms of coaching, fitness and training methods but there are personnel issues to be dealt with among the current staff. Some will need to be replaced while other things need addressing.”

That inquisition takes place in Spain this week as the players depart for a five-day break at a Seville training camp.

Jordan knows Palace’s squad needs strengthening and said: “We need three or four more players and there is as much money available for players as is needed.

“We’ve now looking at two centre forwards and should have one in within four weeks. I think defensively we are okay and have cover.

“A centre forward will cost £2m, and we need a playmaker who will cost another £2m. I’ve already spent £4m and if I can get that spending up to £8m I think we’ll be okay and will finish in the top 10.

“We’ve now established a scouting system throughout Europe and are looking at three or four players closely, although possible changes to the transfer system have delayed things a bit.

“Off the pitch everything is fine but we need results, we’ve been turned over by teams who we shouldn’t have been turned over by and that’s not good enough.”

West Ham striker Paul Kitson’s loan deal will be extended by a month.
