Isn't Wally Downes at Brentford now?
Where's Edmundo when you need him?

Venables deserted Palace in October 1980 to take charge at QPR. Howard Kendall discussed the possibility of taking charge but Palace gave the managers's job to long serving Ernie Whalley, initially on a temporary basis before making it permanent, only to be replaced with Big Mal from 1st December 1980!

Surprisingly given his length of tenure, I remember EW's time as manager quite well. I think it's because my old man took a shine to him as a fellow aged balding old git (sorry Dad...just joking).
For some time after Ernie got the heave ho, my old man would always ask me, right in the middle of when I was telling him about the latest Palace result, "What's Ernie Whalley doing these days then son?"
Exactly what he did do however is a bit lost in the old memory banks...it was a bit confusing as I think Ernie's brother was youth team coach at Watford for a few years...I seem to remember that Ernie became manager in non-league...Dagenham possibly?
Afraid I don't have a clue what he's doing now...

I know he was at Chelsea in a coaching capacity after his "job for life" ended at Palace.
I remember being at Birmingham away (0-1) when Ernie was manager and hearing "we love you Ernie - we do" which was the first time I ever heard that tune sung at a match. He also dropped our 2 best players (Clive Allen and Vince) for an away defeat at Leeds (0-1) because they "hadn't tried enough" at the previous game or something.
I'm tired, I'm going to bed.

I recall that when Ernie was in charge and the rumours of Big Mal coming back firmed up, there was talk of them being joint managers or something - that lasted about 2 days and Ernie's reign was over. I was at Selhurst for big Mal's first game back (4-1 v Norwich) in Dec '80 - that and the following home fixture being my first and last games seen in person to date!

I will probably have to contact the Salvation Army or the Red Cross they can find missing people. Is Norwood police on the net?

Downes is indeed at Brenford as one of the three coaching staff (with Lewington and Terry Bullivant).
Downes is the one who does all the loud shouting from the touchline !
I think this thread is becoming a bit confusing ! I am talking about x Palace Manager Ernie Whalley not the other Wimbledon one. God Bless Ernie.. he featured on one of my favorite Palace jigsaws that I had many years ago, does anyone remember it ? I think it was a 1000 piece one and it had the team photo on.
Sad it may be but it kept me amused when I was young !!!

Of the 4 managers we had that dreadful season(80-81),Whalley had the best results sequence. We won the first 2 games under him (after losing 9 out of 10 under Venables), and in all, we played 10 league games winning 3 and drawing 2. Considering we won only 6 games all season, his sequence in charge was really quite bright.
