OK

This is where you hear a cover version and it's rank.
Or you hear a cover version, think it's ok, maybe, not bad, and then you hear the original and you now think it's rank.

Such as

Don't Cry for me Argentina - Madge
Always on my mind - PSB
The Wanderer - Status Quo
Father and Son - Boyzone
Words - Boyzone

The celebraty verion of perfect day

Marlyn Mansons recent butchering of tainted love.

Any Westlife cover

On MTV a few months back I saw some death metal band covering Elanor Rigby it was crap, can't remember the name of the band but the lead singer was trying to look like that vampire from the old horror films Nosfeou (sp?)

Oasis tried a cover of Heros on the B-Side of D'ya know what I mean, whatever ever possessed them to think they sounded like Bowie I do not know.

So many god awful songs, so little space... I don't have much time for any boy/girl band stuff, so the following is a selection from some of my favourite artists which made me cringe first time I heard them...

Jam - Midnight Hour (an unholy mess)
Madness - The harder they come
Blondie - Ring of Fire
Gary Numan - 1999
Carter - Another Brick in the wall
('cept the bit where they shout "motherfecker!" for no discernable reason)

Apparantly she actually hated doing that song herself! Agree it was pretty awful.

Gavin Axten said anything Steps covered, which is quite fair enough but i really don't think they personally gave a sh*t :)

Although I'm sure a few of you will think the original was sh*t in it's own right, I couldn't believe the video A1 came up with for Ah-Ha's 'Take on Me'. The original used pretty groundbreaking mix of drawing/animation and video and A1's version was supposed to be a modern equivalent - absolute sh*te, and as for the singing itself :veryangry

OMG! there's so many to choose from.

Gareth's Unchained Melody makes me want to throw my radio against the wall EVERY HOUR!!!:veryangry

but then i never liked the song anyway.

Also, Steps did a version of Kylie's Better The Devil You Know. What was all that about???? A sh!te band doing a cover of an absolutely sh!te song originally done by an artist when she was sh!te - it wasn't even a big hit first time around!!!!

Not only that, but those growly pillocks Limp Bizkit have gone all emotive on 'Behind Blue Eyes' from Who's Next.

The problem with that one and Westlife's 'Uptown Girl' is that they sound exactly the same as the original. I mean what's the point? It's adding nothing new at all so why bother?

Having said that I heard a recent cover of Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer' the other day. They did something different with it - but that involved throwing out all the subtleties of the song and replacing them with crap. And then piling more crap on top.

I do wonder whether philaire has actually heard the Jam's version of Midnight Hour though. Weller's voice wasn't earnest it was hopelessly off-key. Maybe we shouldn't judge live versions which are clearly little more than a jam session, but then again, if they release them in the public domain...

I thought that my original 5 were safe but I have to say that the following two go straight in at the top.

Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes - Unbelievably bland. No doubt Fred Durst loves it as it has the line "No one knows what it's like to be hated" Well get used to it Fred, it ain't gonna get any better with bilge like this!

My other choice is "I'm Your Man" by Shane Richie. Now I can forgive failed Pop Idols for chancing their arm but this bloke couldn't sing if you set his testicles on fire! As said on this week's Malcolm In The Middle "He couldn't say his name in one key!".

Still, loads of people have bought it so it must be OK. Even my missus said she quite likes him. I told her to enjoy while she can as I went off to find the key to the shotgun cabinet. Now it's a case of finding him before I hear it again ad have to use the gun on myself!

That song in the charts at the moment, has a sample of Supertramps "Breakfast in America". I'm not sure if its an actual cover - I think there's some unrelated spoken bollocks shoehorned in alongside the bowl-emtpyingly off-key singing.

Will Young - Light my fire
Gareth Gates - unchained melody
Rik Waller - Something inside so strong
Madonna - American Pie

BUT, there is one cover that stands out above all others in the world of shitness. A cover that is so bad, that by comparison all of the above songs actually seem like they run the originals very close in terms of musical quality. A cover that is to music what Mark Kennedy is to fitness. A cover that really does suck the life out of all who hear it.

That cover is, of course . . . . . . . . .

The Coors version of "Little Wing"

Much as I love the original, I quite like this cover especially the Andy Weatherall mix of it.

2. Wheatus - 'A Little Respect'
3. Carpenters - 'Please Mr. Postman'
4. Jon Alford - 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes'
5. Otis Redding - 'Day Tripper'

I have to say though, I really like some of the songs others have mentioned!

hate erasure, but a little respect was ok, but wheatus really did murder it. And Jon Alfords smoke gets in your eyes...ha ha, my ex fancied him. ive never heard the original of that one.

One of the finest covers ever IMHO. Loved the original, love this version too.

Have to agree with Wickham Eagle on Walk This Way; worst cover ever, surely. The spoken word parts are laughable.

Although written jointly by Jane Weidlin (Go Go's) and Terry Hall (just formed Fun Boy Three) with regard to "Our lips are sealed" I have to say that the Go Go's version (released first) is significantly better. FB3 version is ok but there is a further cover version by the apparently aptly named Duff Sisters which is a hideous Bag o' shyte.
Anyone, absolutely anyone who records a cover of The La's "There she goes"
needs to be tied in a sack with say....I dunno......Ruth Kelly,....no,no, David Mellor, and thrown into the Thames......at Fulham.
