I am guessing that in his version it is 100% bet at all times - can you get to £500 before (the inevitable) short-priced loser busts you. Assuming average odds of 1.5 you need 9 or 10 successful bets in a row.
You and I on the other hand are doing a different £10 challenge - by using a staking strategy to gradually build the total. As the bank increases the larger stakes gets us to the finish line at an increasing rate.

Actually, I think it'll be fun if we can create another comp like the monthly Betting Masters but instead of determining the winner by the highest points, the winner will be the person with the longest winning streak (minimum odds required).
I'm sure there are these sort of competitions elsewhere on other gambling forums. If there are enough interests, I'll research some more and get details to post on here later. (unless someone ready know of one and can help post here)

Sounds like a good idea, this thread probably isn't going to work unless all people are betting under the same rules. (guilty of that myself)
I thought the idea was to start with £10 and try to get to £500, however looking back it was supposed to be by betting your full stake each time.
Winning streak sounds good, or simply seeing how much someone can make in a month from £10.

The month time limit is probably the way to go rather than an odds limit and number of bets. If someone wants to bet on 300+ events with odds of less than 1.1 why shouldn't they if it ends up being successful. If you impose an odds limit it becomes more of a lottery.

I can't see the reasoning behind having a minimum odds limit but I do think each bet should be he whole of your 'pot'. Also the bets should be put up before the event.

£10 on Blackburn to beat newcastle - 3.3 betfair
Blackburn (more precisely Steve Kean) need this win. I see him sending out a strong team and playing goodwille & rochina who should be starting in the league.
Newcastle have put out decent sides in the first couple of rounds, but these players really will need a rest as the back 5 and 3 midfielders are unchanged this season. Newcastle also have devilishly hard next 5 games, Pardew must have one eye on this.

Steve are you actually having these bets? I know I bang on a bit about backing at best odds available but you have taken 1.53216 about that treble when at William Hill you could easily have had
1.3500
1.1666
1.1250
which pays 1.77186
and would return £68.93, winning 42% more than your possible return.
There is an excellent odds comparison website where you can select your teams/results and it then tells you the best combined odds book to place accas.

Believe the actual challenge is £10 to £1000, been looking at a few threads and also that minimum odds were Even money so you could do it in about 8 bets, but don't think if I did get to £500 that I am putting the whole lot on anything, and also think it is too hard finding even money shots that the outcome isn't going to be tight.
However this guy got to £500 in 9 bets, all odds on...

31-10-2011, 01:05 PM
Start with £10 - choose a series of bets (no retsriction on odds) but betting 100% of bank each time until you reach £500.
Unless you are LL in which case you keep £10 back when you reach £100 and you may or may not bet all of bank from then on. :D

Like the idea of not being able to start again. Maybe people can re enter at the start of every month or once everyone is out?
Given that I wasn't using my full stake I will start again from £10.

Actually GE has given me an idea - we could formalise LL's action.
If you manage to reach £100 you get to keep £10 for a second attempt.
Makes some sense as by that point you have reached about halfway in terms of the number of bets required (assuming reasonably similar odds).

In hindsight, that was a terrible bet, Si.
Ireland had 4 goals in the bag from the first leg, so they are less likely to push up and attack... I agree that they still should have won against a minnow like Estonia, but with the circumstance in mind, -1.5 handicap is asking for too much I reckon. :(
si1965
16-11-2011, 11:24 AM
Disagree with you Noodle (despite losing the bet).
Ireland had arguably a stronger side for the game last night with the return of Doyle and Hunt and refusing LA Galaxy's request for Keane to return early from international duty. Trappatoni said he was not taking qualification for granted and the Irish team will always put on a performance at home in front of a packed house.
The Estonia side was on paper a great deal weaker with goalkeeper and both central defenders suspended from the first game - one of whom is the club captain.
To be honest, Estonia played very well but, if it wasn't for the howler from Given that gifted them the goal, I think that their heads would have dropped and Ireland would have got at least one or two more.

I saw this bet yesterday, and took an interest, because I know you seem to specialise in Irish football Si, and also because I had some bets on the game. Several punters on the PL boards also backed Ireland -1.5. You could see Ireland beating this handicap if Estonia became demoralised and Ireland's forwards took advantage. The argument for backing Estonia was that Ireland would sit on their first leg lead and Estonia would attack. Personally, I backed Estonia to be drawing or winning at half time (Estonia +0.5 @ 2.0) which I thought was a good bet. Also backed Estonia 'most corners' @ 3.5, 'most corners first half' @ 3.5 and 'corner handicap -2' @ 2.0. Estonia had outscored Ireland by 4 corners to 1 in the first game -
http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/season=2012/matches/round=2000113/match=2008825/index.html
And they had won 56 corners to Ireland's 42 in the tournament -
http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/season=2012/matches/round=2000113/match=2008829/prematch/index.html
The tournament stats also show the two teams had about the same number of shots. So on balance, I thought Estonia would play better than they had in the first game, and Ireland might just sit back a bit and be happy to defend, and ultimately be happy to take a draw or even a narrow defeat.
I saw the last few minutes of the first half, and it didn't look that way - Ireland were winning 1-0 and were passing the ball around well and looked to be in control. They were attacking too, and it looked set up for Ireland to score a few more goals in the second half. I didn't see the second half.
I think it's important to remember that winning bet does not necessarily mean 'good bet' and losing bet does not necessarily mean 'bad bet'. Most of my bets on this game lost, but I'm not convinced they were bad bets.
I didn't see most of the game (only a few minutes before half time). Just found two reports online. The report on goal.com says
"Estonia neither looked like a side who believed they could make a comeback nor were even capable of making a go of things in order to restore pride." -
http://www.goal.com/en-gb/match/69053/republic-of-ireland-vs-estonia/report
The BBC report says "Estonia were toothless in attack" -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15714148.stm
Although I think these quotes were from the first half, the reports give the impression that Ireland were the better side and unlucky to not to win, and perhaps could have won by a few goals - and suggest your -1.5 bet was perhaps a good one and unlucky not to win.
