Charlton Athletic can today announce that all 18,000 tickets in home areas have been sold for the forthcoming 2000/2001 Premiership season.
For the first time in the club's history, Charlton had decided that due to the anticipated demand they would sell all home area tickets as season tickets. As of lunchtime on Wednesday, June 28th a total of 762 applicants looked set to be disappointed as applications continued to arrive at The Valley.
Existing season ticket requests will be dealt with in the order in which they are received by the club and all unsuccessful applicants will be contacted by letter in the next few days. All hospitality packages are also sold out and there will only be a very limited number of match day packages for certain matches.
Charlton chief executive Peter Varney said;
"To have sold out the stadium before the end of June is naturally very pleasing but I am desperately disappointed for those people who have not been able to obtain a ticket. We have planning permission for an extension to the North stand at The Valley to provide 5,600 extra seats and we are actively considering all the options open to us to provide additional capacity.
"Last season in the First Division, we were regularly getting 1,500 people turning up on a match day for games, who may not have been able to commit to the purchase of a season ticket for financial reasons. It is a cause for regret and concern that we are not able to accommodate these supporters in the Premiership.
"I would have expected about 5,000 fans to arrive for the less prestigious games next year, while experience tells me that for games against the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Spurs, Leeds and Arsenal we could have filled The Valley twice over.
"We have introduced a buy back scheme so that we can re-distribute tickets and if an away club does not take up its full allocation those supporters on our waiting list will get first option.
"The reality is that The Valley cannot accommodate the numbers of people who wish to support the club".

Rolling, do you HONESTLY think these are 18'000 loyal Charlton supporters? I bet quite a few are ex-Wimbledon and probably some Fulham who assumed they'd be in the Premiership this season and can't afford to go to Chelsea.
PS: Bought any players yet?

Yawn. Sell 9,000 season tickets when you're in the first division, in a financial mess with every chance of being relegated and you have local rivals then you can gloat. Until then enjoy watching the big boys and we'll see you next season.
Enjoy it while it lasts, well for a season aanyway. Enjoy all your gloryhunting supporters who keep the genuine and loyal supporters who cant stretch to a season ticket, away from watching their team. Tell them to wait until the following season, when the gloryhunters change to the next London team which get promoted to the premiership. Cos Charlton as sure as hell wont be there

SIKO, have you turned over a new leaf or have you been told to calm it by the BBS?
you usually swear your head off at us filthily rich pikies.

Rolling Mist - If you're after some Rivals why not try Tranmere? From reading other threads it looks like they are after some Rivalry and they might even take you seriously. See you and your caravans next season.

Rolling, do you have details on ticket sales for the previous seasons then? Success always brings in more people regardless of the division and an unlucky relegation from the previous season wouldn't have hurt your sales too much this year, especially when promotion became a formality. With football becoming more popular it is bound to attract more people anyway (which will affect the attendances of all clubs). The interesting figures will be the season ticket sales and average attendances for the previous ten seasons, after you returned to the Valley. Anyone have the similar figures for Palace?

M A W,
I haven't got my anorak with me today although from looking out of my office window over the city skyline maybe it would have been wise to bring it (summer, what summer?)
Do you take your name from the group that performed the classic 80s hit "Land Down Under".
Absolute class.

I do and it is (forever associated with *that* Amercia's Cup series). The only problem is that their three other hits were all related to our current situation : "Who Can It Be Now?", "It's A Mistake" and "Hard Luck Story".
Rolling mist, me swear, how can you say such a thing, Im a respectable quiet person, your typical goody 2 shoes. In answer to the group who sang that song, it was Men at Work I beleive. Not a saying you hear alot around the Valley is it, and probably not one a majority of Charlton fans can bring themselves to say, it would probably give them nightmares for weeks

It's all fine and well coming on here to gloat but where were all these new clownton fans before all this success then? Even in the mid 90's when you were a reasonable 1st Division team your support was pitiful. We're supposed to be your big rivals and yet time after time when we played you at Selhurst you couldn't even fill the away end at our place. We don't even care about charlton yet would always fill what we were given at valley. In 96' when we beat you in the play offs semi you had a good side, yet I remember you not even being able to fill the valley for that game against us then!
You all go on about saving your club in the 80's and all that, but in reality your gates were just 3,000 at the time which is tiny. In truth your new fans are just glory hunters who sniff a chance to watch a bit of Premiership football, most probably don't even support charlton. As "Men at Work" said try being in our situation and do you really think you'd still be getting 9,000 season ticket holders already signed up before the end of June, of course you wouldn't.

all valid comments, and i won't dispute them. but as we all know a footballing community is impacted on by socioeconomical change.
as i haven't disputed your comments, i'm sure you won't dispute mine when i say that the east end of london, in particular the docks, suffered for sevral decades in the middle to latter half of this century. the area degenerated, and so did its working and living population because of a movement away from primary and secondary sector employment, towards tertiary and service sector related work.
Long gone were the crowds of 60,000-70,000 with a horde of fans on the large east terrace, and the club fell from glory in the 80s through mismanagement and poor financial decision making.
Now we see the government and private sector pumping more and more money into the recently untapped resources of the Greenwich Peninsular, and a massive improvement in the infrastructure of the area as a whole - Docklands, City Airport, Jubilee Line extension, The Dome (?), Thames Barrier (i'm struggling now).
I think the development of our football club has gone hand in hand with the change in society around it. hence, another reason why we are regarded as a community club, because its part of its lifeblood.

You will be struggling if they use the Thames Barrier. It'll flood the whole Thamesmead area http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif

Gavin, thank you for your carefully constructed critique of the relative merits of all South London teams. The internet is a wonderful communications medium and this BBS is at the pinnacle when attracting the incisive and in-depth analysis of all aspects of the football milieu. Your decision to grace us with your presence here has increased the overall experience greatly and we look forward to further examples of your Jungian insight into the human condition and Wildean observations on the nature of human existence.

Gavin,
Didn't I see you in the Sun a couple of weeks ago?
Are you 'BRITIAN' ?
Nice to see your in agreement with my comments then Rolling Mist. You'll understand then that your in no position to Gloat to the loyal supporters of South London.
As for Charlton staying up I'm with Strictly Palace on this one. Last time Charlton were sort of unlucky. Time after time they'd lose by the odd goal and put in performances in which they felt that they deserved more than they got. But we only know to well how it feels to be in the situations I've mentioned because that's been us in the top flight so many times. Charlton will go down unless they sign some Premiership players and so far they haven't.

If it wasn't for Charlton fans despising CPFC so much, i'd want to see them survive.
They are a local club, who have quietly grown over the last decade in the Nationwide, and now have a second shot at making the step up.
I doubt they'll go down in the bottom, or second bottom positions, but might fall into 3rd at the last. I think Curbishly is sticking with the players that won promotion, which is commendable, but they probably need that extra bit of class to cut it upstairs.
Like I say, if it wasn't for their fans, i'd want to see them survive, but then again they always give it 'stand up if you hate Palace', which at the end of the day is quite amusing, cos no one gives a f*ck about them.

The fact is that Charlton will struggle next season - no one wants to join them and who can blame them.
They have Sven up front who is rated total s*it by the Charlton fan at work - and that was in a promotion team. When they create two or three chances in a game, quite frankly it will be a repeat of last time they tried to mix it with the big boys - a string on 1-0 defeats, and a worthy but dull effort to stay up. See you next season.
