View Full Version : Where's the banter gone?

When did rival humourous banter turn into blatant boring abuse?

My housemates support Pompey and QPR which results in loads of bets and taking the p*ss but I don't go round the house calling them fu**ing c**ts! The inability to argue your corner without resorting to swearing and name calling clearly shows how thick you are.

Bring back the banter or go and do your homework!

Gladys, it happened when these boards were invaded by Chortleton fans and the occasional Seaweed who seem to spend more than half of their lives worrying about what Palace are up to.

We all know that the constant need to put people down is the surest sign one can see of a basic insecurity and I suppose that we should not be surprised that fans of both of those teams feel that way.

I have no great problem with Brighton fans - they've had it rough for a long, long time and they are our traditional rivals so fair enough.

Chortleton fans, on the other hand, really are pathetic. Instead of enjoying their current temporary visit to the land of milk and honey that is the Premier League, they seem to only be interested in larging it on another club's site.

What makes it even funnier is that by and large, we couldn't give a toss about them anyway.

For the record, I think that Curbishley is a good manager and that Kinsella was an inspired purchase.

They have apparently lashed out 12 million quid this close season on a Harpo Marx lookalike striker and a Danish pastry midfielder who they think will be enough to keep them up.

When injuries and suspensions start to bite and they have a few games against teams that are actually any good they will of course start their inevitable slide down the table.

They may even survive this season but of course it would only be a stay of execution. But who the hell cares anyway?

When it happens, of course, we won't see any more stupid boastful postings from illiterate pikies but in the meantime I'm afraid that we're just going to have to learn to live with their paranoid rantings - I doubt they can afford therapy.

Enjoyable posting Gooders but I feel that you are one of those 'closet charlton haters'. You are insecure of the rivalry that is there and deny it exists. I can see this by the way you call the BHA rivalry 'traditional' when it is not. Our true 'traditional' rivals are Millwall, you know that deep down. BHA had a dozen scraps in the 70's early 80's and that's where it comes from but it certainly isn't 'traditional'.
You also claim to not care about chorlteton and then tear them to pieces magnificent fashion which I congratulate you for, particularly the witty 'harpo marx' pun - top drawer stuff!

Come on Gooders, don't deny it, we hate Charlton too.

This whole rivals thing has been bugging me of late and whilst I can see the logic in us having Charlton as rivals I cannot find it in my heart to dislike them. As AA says Millwall are our traditional rivals.

This has a lot to do with, in my case at least and most people I know, the fact that most of us have family/friends who are Millwall fans and given that we tend to have communication links in London that run more on an North/South axis than East/West we are more likely to come accross people who support either Millwall or Brighton in our every day lives. Patterns of domestic migration also tend to follow this rule and whilst 90% of have reason to vist both New Cross or the Sussex area, even if it is just to commute, how many of us EVER go anywhere near Charlton territory ?

From talking to Charlton fans it becomes obvious that most of them dislike us because of the preceived notion ( and one that I agree with ) that Noades ripped them off over the ground sharing deal. Now Noades is not exactly Mr Popularity at Palace either and most of them are quite taken aback when I explain this.

So I guess that as long as Charlton dislike Palace on such a one-way basis I guess that things aint going to change. Good luck to Charlton, its nice to see little, well run clubs doing so well. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks Mat ov, you never know the same might happen again for Crystal Palace.

No honestly Anti, I don't.

I rarely hate teams as such (Arsenal a few years back, ditto Moan United before they let their ability do the talking, and Wimbledon simply because they are the most boring team ever to take the field anywhere).

When I first started supporting Palace Brighton were our rivals (I used to go to all those pre-season friendlies which always seemed to feature loads of crowd trouble) so they always will be to me.

Plucky Charlton, as a team, have never bothered me. They normally play a decent game of football and we normally beat them.

Their fans, especially recently, piss me right off, that I will admit.

I can almost stomach the arrogance of supporters of teams like Moan United, Liverpool and the Arse because at least they've got something to be proud and boastful about.

Charlton fans, however, (most of whom are clearly Johnny-come-latelys anyway) are just a bunch of sad, paranoid, illiterate, childish whingers with very low self-esteem who spend more time on here trying to wind us up than chatting to their mates on their own site about their supposedly invincible team.

And now I really am going to do my best to ignore them because they're simply not worth it.

I save my hatred for the glory hunter clubs certainly not other south London teams. Brighton are the main rivals but I respect them anyway.
The banter has gone due to monotonous gloating by a small unoriginal group of away fans being too much for some who should know better to take.

My position is clear (as mud probably!!!) Charlton are doing well, there is no doubt, so to hate a fellow South London team for that is not really in my mentality.

I dont like being lorded over, and when I feel that happens the response is not as I would like because frustration sets in.

Take my posts lately, I have been saying that I want Charlton to come down a peg or two but not because I despise the club or its support, purely for the amount of p!ss take Palace fans had have to take recently.

My real feeling is that we wont go down and Charlton will finish in a respectable position (although first season anywhere would do bar the bottom 3 I think).

That is basically my feeling, oh and to mention rivals, unfortunately the only one we have are 3rd division and we will never play them again unless they stay in the cups for a couple of rounds, which they never seem to do.

Good luck charlton for the season, and lets get back to the real banter.

Have to agree with Gooders...

Charlton don't irritate me in the least. I'd much prefer a Charlton fan who supports his local team than a 'Cockney Red' or a South London Gooner.

I can't for the life of me figure out why Charlton appear to hate Palace so much. Ah well, never mind.

Good luck to Charlton anyway, the feelings NOT mutual!

A bit of controlled and contained hatred between rival Clubs is fine. It helps maintain interest and spices up particular games. I am certainly not one of those people who feel that we should all be nice to one another.

I do however agree with Gladys Allover who asked:

When did rival humourous banter turn into blatant boring abuse?

Resorting to pure abuse is usually a sign of weakness - when the argument is lost. It is far more effective to use humour (even cruel humour) to get your point across.

On the subject of who is our natural rival, I have to add my vote to the Millwall brigade. Brighton also come a fair way up my list (as one who well remembers the fantastic, and often bitter, games on the 1970's and 1980's).

My most hated Club is Manchester United (although this feeling isn't reciprocated, which makes me hate them even more). Apart from the Cup Final, and the nortorious semi-Final, and Cantona etc, I hate this Team because of what they are doing to football generally - and smaller clubs like us in particular.

As for Charlton, well I am afraid to say that try as I might, I just can't feel nasty thoughts about them. In fact [and I am opening myself up for abuse here], I am quite pleased to see them doing so well. Charlton are a model for 'smaller' Clubs, and the way they reacted to relegation a couple of Seasons ago was perfect. I hope they do survive this year.

Quality post James - all should take note and play to those rules - keep it clean, abuse and bad language does little to impress others and can only be frowned upon by your good natured fellow supporters.

I do hate them, why wouldn't I??

BTW, no need to reveal your inadequate childhood and pubic years to us all. I can only assume that you used to twist one off over your mums catalogues otherwise you wouldn't have thought of it. I hope you mum didn't get cross with you when she found the pages stuck together!
