View Full Version : Your favourite Christmas song?

Do you plonk for the sentiment of the old classics such as White Chritmas, the "Glam" of Slade and Wizzard or something more up to date? (I'm buggered if I can think of anything classic in recent years though).

Me - I have to go for Merry Xmas Everybody - a catchy tune that would never have been a hit but for the sentiment of the lyrics. The lyrics capture my Christmas's as a young'un as I guess White Christmas does for people of my parents generation. In a perverse sort of way I find it moving everytime I hear it - almost like hearing Glad All Over.

Gregg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas

Why don't people write Christmas songs anymore? All we ever get is cover versions of old ones, or slow ballads with a vague wintery, sleigh bell sound in the background. Has there been a new Christmas song in the last 10 years or so? I can't think of one off the top of my head.

Alright Dai, once again, huge huge thanks for getting me a Brighton ticket - top, top day.

Out of the selection given I went for "wish it could be xmas everyday", but for some reason - "Come up & see me, make me smile", cockney rebel chappy really makes me feel Christmassy ??

I think it was on a beer advert around Christmas time some years ago.

Slade is the one that stands out from my childhood. Others I like are Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry, Pogues and Kirsty McColl, and Chris Rea's Driving Home for Christmas

I also really like Sleigh Ride (Dinga-linga dinga-ling dong ding!), Phil Spector's Xmas Album is excellent.

Funny - I was thinking about starting such a thread myself...

Got to be Slade - nothing else comes close.

However, other top tunes are:

'Happy Xmas (War is Over)' - John Lennon
'Merry Christmas Everyone' - Shakin' Stevens
'All I Want for Christmas is You' - Mariah Carey

the latter being not only the best Xmas song of the last ten years, but the only of her records I can stomach.

And I must echo Smurp and El Ag on the Phil Spector score - being a grump, it's the only thing that can truly get me in the Xmas mood, and once it's in the C.D. player, it stays there till twelfth night!

It's an absolute belter. As with the chimps and typewriters, I guess she had to do something good eventually. Still waiting for Whitney.

Obviously Fairytale of New York, Wizzards wonderful "I wish it could be Christmas Everyday", and Slade, but my favourite Christmas stuff is older and slushier. Sinatra's Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Vaughan Monroe's "Let it Snow". Top of the heap though is Judy Garlands version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
"Someday we all will be together, if the fates allow
Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow" Always brings a lump to my throat. (as do all movie versions of a Christmas Caraol, including The Muppet One). And I'm also rather partial to In the Bleak Midwinter.

I think all the tracks from the Phil Spector Xmas Album are wonderful. Trouble is, I've got the LP and both my decks are packed up ready for the move (move? what move? The house has been on the market for three months.....) so it has to be Chris Rea's Driving Home for Christmas. This is on a double CD called, I think, The Best Christmas Album in the World - Ever (predictably) and they're pushing it again this year. Great album - has several of the tracks mentioned in this thread.

One other gem which no-one's mentioned so far is Little Saint Nick by the Beach Boys, from their Xmas album. Trouble is, I've got the LP and both my decks are packed up ready..................

Okay, I've just googled it and here're the words:

In the bleak midwinter,
frosty wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron,
water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow,
snow on snow,
in the bleak midwinter,
long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him
nor earth sustain;
heaven and earth shall flee away
when he comes to reign:
in the bleak midwinter
a stable place sufficed
the Lord God incarnate,
Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels
may have gathered there
cherubim and seraphim
thronged the air;
but his mother only,
in her maiden bliss,
worshiped the beloved
with a kiss.

What can I give him,
poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd,
I would bring a lamb;
if I were a wise man,
I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him
give my heart.

Christina Rossetti, 1872

Fantastic! I no nothing of Ms Rossetti, but those words strike me as great at drawing out the personal relationship with God side of Christianity, the bit I find quite attractive, if I might come over all theological.

I was thinking of the hymn (although I think their are 2 versions of that?), in particular, as performed by my old school choir at the carol concert, 1st verse soprano, then full ensemble. It was lovely. And the "Sing Choirs of Angels" last verse of Oh Come All ye Faithful as well, with the descant harmonies. That's something to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

The Yobs - brought out Run Rudolph Run as a single, but probably best known for their take on The Worm Song (nobody likes me, everybody hates me). Both the Boys albums, are pretty good BTW.

Punk Christmas songs could be deserving of their own sub category. Of the top of my head I can think of:
The Greedies (formerly the Greedy B*stards, members of The Sex Pistols, Thin Lizzy and sometimes Bob Geldoff) - We wish you a merry Christmas/Jingle Bells
Stiff Little Fingers - White Christmas (a live version on the At The Edge b-side)
The Dickies - Silent Night
None of these are actually any good mind you...

Hey Santa Claus you c*nt,
Where's my f*cking bike?
I've opened all this other junk,
And there's nothing that I like,

And I come to see you twice,

Still a great song though.

They said there'll be snow at Christmas,
They said there'll be peace on earth,
But instead it just kept on raining,
A veil of tears for the Virgin birth.

I remember one Christmas morning,
The Winter's light and a distant choir,
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell,
And eyes full of tinsel and fire.

They sold me a dream of Christmas,
They sold me a silent night,
They told me a fairy story,
'Til I believed in the Israelite.

And I believed in Father Christmas,
And I looked to the sky with excited eyes,
Then I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn,
And I saw him and through his disguise.

I wish you a hopeful Christmas,
I wish you a brave New Year,
All anguish, pain and sadness,
Leave your heart and let your road be clear.

They said there'd be snow at Christmas,
They said there'd be peace on earth,
Hallelujah! Noel!, be it Heaven or Hell,
The Christmas we get, we deserve.

and as Palace fans, I think we all deserve a Happy Christmas :p

Sometimes he's nutty
Sometimes he's corny
He can be brown
Or greenish-brown
If you eat fibre on Christmas Eve
He might come to your town...

What about ''Fairytale Of New York'', Pogues and Kirsty MacColl:)
That's got to be my favourite!

Never heard of it

Merry Christmas Everbody by Slade is the best, even though Argos attempt to ruin it every year.

Time for more lyrics from Google then.

Fairytale of New York:

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
And I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars
Big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old

When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on the corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing 'Galway Bay'
And the bells were ringing
Out for Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old **** on junk
Living there almost dead on a drip
In that bed

You scum bag
You maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God
It's our last

I could have been someone
So could anyone
You took my dreams
From me when I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

I'd forgotten about this. An absolute belter.
