View Full Version : RUSH - anyone?....

I've been a big fan of Rush, the Canadian Rock trio (Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson & Neil Peart) for years now. Was wondering if any other BBSers had 1. heard of them 2. appreciated their work. IMO the greatest band of all time. :lux: :lux:

I have one of their albums...but can't remember its name.
The singer from The Music sounds a bit like the singer from Rush.

i'm not a big fan, but 'a show of hands' is a great live album.
i've also got a test for echo and that red album with mission on it,
but never listened to them much.

My brother in law is a big fan. I used to borrow some of their albums and was always impressed/worried with the lyrics. Some of them make you wonder what the writer was smoking at the time!

Funnily enough, I was listening to one of their greatest hits compilations only last week. Used to love them in my youth, 2112 and A Farewell to Kings were fantastic albums, and Spirit of the Radio was one of my favorite singles (still got the 12" somewhere). I do think they slightly overused the "plinky/string instrumental introduction into crashing rock" trick.
(Wow, Richard contributes to a music thread, shocker)

I remember them from when they first came on the scene (yes I am old - must be 26 or 27 years ago wasn't it?).
I came across a big fan of theirs the other week. I was travelling Newark (US) to Manchester (UK) and the guy next to me was on his way home having just 'popped over' to see them appearing on tour in New Jersey! Now that's a fan huh?

Seen them a few times. Like their earlier stuff but, quite frankly, anything after Moving Pictures is a bit of a waste of time.

Rush, brilliant. What a band.
- The trees
- Red barchetta
- subdivisions
- etc
All brilliant stuff. Saw them on the signals tour and it's incredible how 3 musicians can play such technically and rythmically complex music. Lee plays the bass and sings and somtimes plays key board with hsi rigth hand and bass pedals with his feet. Lifeson plays wonderful guitar and also bass pedals and keys. Peart is up there with Moon and Bonham IMHO.

Interesting response. My favourite albums would be 2112 & Permanent Waves. Haven't been able to see them live yet, they haven't toured in the UK for a while. Imagine they're superb live. Still, I'm going to see Counting Crows in Sheffield on Jan 22nd so it ain't so bad. :)

I had never heard of Rush until a guy at my last place of work (who claims to have been babysat by the Experience) recommended them to me. I've never managed to find/got around to finding any of their music.
Any suggestions would be welcome, or if anybody fancies taping some of their best stuff for us... :p

struggle to write a good tune? i disagree strongly! rush's lyrics have been used by university lecturers as a result of their profound and articulate nature. silliness.

There is a difference between a good tune and good lyrics.
Maybe they should have tried poetry.
I always worry about bands who are popular in Brazil.

My brother and I went to Boston and Chicago last year to see them on the Vapor Trails tour and the gigs were absolutely awesome. Three hours non-stop kick-ass music from all of their albums.

They made a good record about three years ago, surprisingly. I know there aren't many great Canadian bands but the U.S. is bigger on solo artists, as well - the band thing is rather British, I think.

Em, yeah, oz has produced loads of decent musicians. To name a few:
- Kylie
- Dannii
- Nathalie
- Midnight Oil
- INXS
- Silverchair
Only 4 out of 6 reek of massively commercialised talentless manufactured tripe, and Midnight Oil were a bit cr@p too.
Canada on the other hand has:
- Neil Young
- Saga
- Rush
- Bryan Adams
- Y&T
4 of these will certainly be remembered in years to come.

Incorrect. Brian Johnson who replaced Bon Scott is Scottish the Young brothers are Australian.
From someone who has played both ice hockey and Australian Rules I would say they are quite equal in what would be classed as a "Man's Sport".
Agreed with the INXS call but let's hear some names of songs from the other bands which you would classify as "utter shite".

Nope:
Brian Johnson was born on October 5, 1947 in Newcastle Upon Tyne (Northumberland), England
Angus McKinnon Young was born on March 31, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Malcolm Young was born on January 6, 1953 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Cliff Williams was born on December 14, 1949 in Romford (Essex), England.
The only aussie is Phil Rudd who was born in Melbourne.
That actually makes ACDC a british band I would say.

Uncle Brod's utterly boring trivia here:
In the US Charts Geddy Lee's highest singles chart performance was as guest vocalist on Canadian comedians Bob & Doug McKenzie's 1982 hit called "Take Off".This peaked at number 16.
Rush's highest chart hit came later the same year with the track "New World Man".This peaked at number 21.
The single version of "Spirit Of Radio" peaked at 51 on the US chart of 29th March 1980.
I thought you would all want to know this.

i'm listening to rush at the moment and thought i'd resurrect this thread. moving pictures and power windows are my favourite albums, although the first side of 2112 is very good and powerful. favourite songs are tom sawyer, limelight and spirit of radio.
some of their earlier stuff is quite comical though, i just keep thinking of spinal tap with songs like madrigal, the necromancer, by tor and the snow dog, and xanadu. also i find their later stuff a little unmemorable, the songs don't stand out as well as their earlier material.
having said that though, i saw them in 88 on the "hold your fire tour" and they put on a very good show. i've also seen the latest dvd which i enjoyed.

Different Stages is a brilliant live compilation. I find the more of the older stuff I listen to, the more I like it. Working Man is an awesome tune, while leacking the lyrical genius of Peart, it just rocks.
Saw them at Wembley a few months back and it was one of the defining nights of my life. Absolutely brilliant they were.

Rush were awesome in rotterdam although the sight of my 45 yr old brother in law headbanging after too many bers made it a kind of comic evening :)

I went to Rush's first ever gig in this country in 1977  . It was at the Hammie Odeon, I'm pretty sure it was their 2112 tour.
They were supported by 'Stray'.
Still one of the best gigs I've been to, even though there was only about 300 people there.
Neil Peart writes sone of the most right wing lyrics I've heard from a rock band.

what songs are you referring to here addickted?
i've aways felt that way about "the trees", but my interpretation may be different to the general concensus.

superb rush site for the rush fans. the cultural references and tributes sections are really good.
randy johnson is a big rush fan for example - can that guy be any better. i'm gonna actually be cheering the yanks on this year, sod it.

I've got '2112' and 'All The World's A Stage'. Very pretentious, but good fun and some excellent playing. Geddy Lee had rather a piercing voice which didn't appeal to a lot of people.
If you like Rush, check out a band called Pavlov's Dog - they sound quite a lot like them, and - I think - pre-dated them.
