Anyone else prefer acoustic versions of music rather than the stuff that is released?!

I love listning to a great artist with just there piano/guitar and their voice. No computer editing, no backing instruments - it sounds so much better, yet nobody seems to do it anymore!

I bought Sting's live album a few months ago and it was 100 times better than his greatest hits. The same with Sade's album that I purchased recently.

I just wish more artists would use this natural sound rather than the artificial one that seems to be used 90% of the time with music these days.

Daniel Beddingfield's "Gotta get thru this" has an acoustic version on his album - I wasn't that keen on the dance version he released, but the acoustic version is superb.

90% of my favourite artists are acoustic. For example Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa (well, some of it is), Phil Ochs etc.

Electronic music has its place but you can't beat the feel of the acoustic sound!

Can anyone recommend a good acoustic artist? Either guitar or piano - maybe some hidden talent that I haven't heard of?! :)

Paul Weller kicks a*se when playing an acoustic set.

Had the pleasure of seeing him at the Fairfield Halls.

If you want to listen to some accoustic stuff which stirs the soul, get into Alison Krauss and the Union Station. OK, it's mainly bluegrass, but you wouldn't want to be elitist would you?

Almost accoustic is the original Kings Of Convenience CD which is also a mellow treat.

Supergrass were acoustic on XFM this evening, were very good. There was mention of Gaz (guitar, lead vocals) being a Brighton fan. A listener asked him if he'd been to any Brighton games lately. Gaz's respones was he'd only been to two or three. Zoe Ball said he wasn't missing much :p

If its pure acoustic you want then this doesn't qualify, but I'm currently listeing to Yothu Yindi (no I've not been at the scrabble set) - they do a fusion of ambient dance and aboriginal music.

Very mellow.

Treaty is a good tune

They also do a good version of Jailbreak (AC/DC)

Not heard Jailbreak, I agree about Treaty although Dots on the Shells is probably my favourite...

Not that I know what style he plays now. My collection barely goes beyond Nashville Skyline. Its too expensive (and exhausting :S: ) to be a complete Dylan follower.

Not strictly acoustic in that they do have drums, bass etc. but absolutely brilliant if you ask me, seen them live at the Borderline a few times and they blew me away.

Some good MP3's from them here (http://www.lounge-records.com/bands/whowillmissmary/index.html)

I got an 8track for Christmas and am currently recording my first demo CD. Will keep you posted...

The Omen my friend, you have repeat HAVE to buy The Counting Crows - Across a Wire. What an album, I love this kind of music like you and the Nirvana album is great and a classic but the Counting Crows are timeless. Go and buy it or Download it. :)

Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses does excellent, acoustic solo albums

There's also a New York band called Cat Power who do very interesting acoustic stuff, although it can be a bit miserable at times

Playing the guitar myself i prefer playing acoustically 100% more; i bought a really nice electric guitar, marshall amp when the band i was in starting lifting off(which unfortunatly is no more), and is was OK; but i much prefered playing my acoustic 10 times out of 10, the sound is so much purer and real, there is no need for these stupid instruments which add all kinds of special effects for it(well there is, but if i had a choice...).

Everything is so much better simpler, with a guitar and a voice(or piano and voice etc)...must say i much prefer acoustic versions of songs over released ones; it may sound like a really silly example; but look at Lemar and Fame Academy and the song him and Ainslie wrote called 'lullaby', if you have got the acoustic version of it off the net where they just very basically had the song recorded with them two and a guitar, you will find it is just millions times better than the crap, studio edited with all sorts of nonsense, version they released for the show..

Counting Crows 'live' album Across a Wire, is blinding, although not purely acoustic, is for me, easily the best album they have..

Forgive my ignorance, but out of interest how are we defining "Acoustic" here ?

Just for rock / pop bands & Artists ? Is it lack of backing tracks (if so, how do bands "play" these in live concerts anyway) ? Is pure amplification allowed - e.g. when someone claims to be playing an acoustic gig, are they allowed to be amplified ?

Hey, good to know of another Zappa fan on here! But I must admit I don't know of any of his accoustic guitar stuff - can you recommend any specifics?

Waka Jawaka is the one that comes most freely to mind, but there are others. Genrally individual tracks.
