Yes. It's that time again. Seing as the voters in the real song contest seem to vote for the same country as if they've not actually listened to the song, I thought that we would have our own BBS Song Contest. You don't have to sing, just vote for which country you want to win
Daniel_Nash

Surely there are more options than this? You might be restricted though.
Russia will win it if TaTu sing. I think. But that's undecided at the moment.
The voting is so funny. Terry Wogan really does make it something to watch. Cyprus votes for Greece, Austria votes for Germany. Oh it's funny. :D

The Latvian entry is the best I've heard... the British one is shamefully bad. This duo would have go kicked out of Pop Idol at the first stage.

I have to agree with you - but I still would want to vote for the UK to win .....call me old fashioned ;)

I think that we might get a fair few votes what with all of those little countries (Bulgaria, Poland) supporting our War efforts. Hmm... They have no reason whatsoever, nothing to do with being accepted into the EU.
I'm gonna vote for the worst one, which for the last few years has been Poland.
Can someone add some more options:
Turkey
Sweden
Denmark
Croatia
Belarus
Slovakia
anyone else, I know there are a few

The voting is soooo rigged at the Eurovision.
Who can say which way it'll go this year?
Latvian

Great to see Lativa has twice as many votes as any other country :p
I was at my ex's this time last year and went mental when Latvia won, never seen them win anything before :p

Slovenia's entry of Nanana seems to be in the best traditions of Eurovision. 'Eighties Coming Back' by Estonia has got potential. Presumblay the singer(s) will be wearing luminous yellow socks and a string vest and sweatbands

Worst evening of the year for me. My wife takes this bloody contest far to seriously and we are having (foreign) friends over for dinner so they can all sit around and watch it as they also happen to think its the cultural high spot of the year.

Really? They take this really seriously in Spain, too... I think it dates from the 60s when it was taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest that made them feel like a proper, European country.
Daniel_Nash
22-05-2003, 08:31 AM
Oh dear... cultural high spot?! But it's rigged! it's not about ability or quality of the song, it's all done on political voting!
Still, Terry Wogan makes me laugh and that's enough to make me want to watch. That and i am informed we ARE watching it, no choice really.

we've got foreign friends over;dutch though
they take it really seriously over there but our friends actually south african so she takes it with a pinch of salt.
when any of the songs are in a foreign language, put the subtitles on on page 888. it has a literal translation and it just cracks me up reading it

I want tatu to win for Russia.
Ireland takes it very seriously as well - the selection process made the front page of the tabloids over here.

It's tempting. Terry Wogan is fantastic in it.

22-05-2003, 11:39 AM
The Eurovision's great fun, I watch it every year. Not only is Wogan amusing, but it is also very satisfying to make fun of the mad continentals. You can also pass the time by awarding your own votes according to the totty.
The 1997 victory was fantastic - round at my friends' place, had a sweepstake, mucho drinking, and cheering the roof off whenever Katrina got douze points! Happy days... :lux:

In my opnion the Eurovision Song Contest Is a load of bOll*cks and is just a prime idea to gain ratings on the BBC.
None of the songs are ever any good. Can be a laugh to watch if on but I'll stay away from it. There's better things on Sky
E.g. Valencia vs Real Madrid, 8pm, Sky Sports 3. :p

Boooooo
They were all absolutely shocking!!!
The worst:
Austria
Germany
taTu
Us
Nevertheless, I voted for Austria, it's a tradition.
Everyone's putting it down to Iraq but that's not strictly true. A fair section of Europe actually supported us. Almost the entire Eastern Bloc and Bulgaria voted in favour of Iraq war simply so that we would support their entry for the EC.
To be honest we should boycott it, it's not fair all of this tactical voting (Cyprus/Greece), (Sweden, Norway), (Ukraine/Russia) it just wrecks it.
I had a list of the ten best songs, judged on lyrics, in/out of tune, look, and just general sounding of the song. My winner was sweden, with Estonia second. Just shows how Europe likes all this cheesy sh*t.
I think we should either boycott it, or just get some sort of celebrity, Gareth Gates, Robbie Williams and just wipe the floor with em. Or we could get wat's his face, the scottish arab bloke, that's it- Darius, at least he would try

I've just read through the thread after watching last night. It's getting a bit worrying just how much I'm agreeing with LLCOOLSTEVE these days. :D
Glad Tatu didn't win, they were rotten. I also noticed the Holly Valance-style song, which didn't impress Mrs Strathclyde when I started singing along... "When you look at me, tell me what do you see, this is what you get, it's the way I am..."
The voting was full of comedy as well. The whole thing is off the Unintentional Comedy Scale, especially now that the people telling the results of their nation's votes gets on the telly. Whose idea was it to let them give fawning complements for approximately two hours before getting onto the important stuff? ;)
I'm tempted not to watch next year. Like Riccardo, it annoys me a bit. However you can't take it seriously, and it was one of the funniest things I've seen on TV this year.

Could I just say, in defence of the other nations, that the UK entry was easily the worst on the night and didn't deserve a single point.
Both of our singers were weak, and hopelessly off-key.
Sweden was easily the best, despite being no less cheesy than the others.

The rest of Europe couldn't honestly give us any points because of the performance. The girl was obviously stage struck and couldnt hear the music properly. This caused her to be off key from the beginning and she had no chance to change it all the way thru the song.
Of course her mate had to harmonise with her, thereby ruining the whole thing. It was painful, but hypnotic to watch. Let's face it, any votes from Europe would have been sympathy and that would have been worse don't you think?
I liked Austria's bloke though. He was taking the piss and watching him interviewed on BBC 4 after confirmed this. Effin and blinding, he was a riot!
The whole show last night was a classic IMHO and the best laugh on telly for ages

Could I just say, with reference to such things as "sanity" and "real world" that I am seriously worried about you lot, especially Riccardo.
The Eurovision Song Contest has been an appalling display of poor songwriting, dull performance and lack of talent for a VERY LONG TIME.
It used to be funny, yes....but that was back in the 70's. Now it's simply a complete waste of prime time tv space.
I cannot believe this thread has run to nine pages.
Whatever it is you lot are on - change it for something else!

Its all such a huge waste of time isnt it? With some countries even admiting "and the 12 points go to......our neighbours" rather than casting their votes based on any musical merit. Don't usually watch it but as there was booger else on last night we joined it from about 6 songs in. Funniest moment of the night for Monty was when, having heard the Belgian entry I said quite confidently "One thing is guaranteed, Belgium will get no points". What was that all about? That song was truly awful. The type of thing you'd hear from some barmy folk group performing in a remote pub in the Outer Hebrides. And why did so many acts have their mum's singing with them? Holland for example. When Wogan said "and look out for the great lump of a woman in the hat" and on came a not unattractive blonde singer with an assortment of other women, two of which who looked like they had been quite happily enjoying a night out at their daughters hen do when someone popped their head round the door of the bar they were in and said "Oi, can you sing? Can you dance? Don't ask questions come with me" and before they knew it they were prancing around on stage in their sparkly size 20 blouses! Nothing against large people but lets face it, if Rik Waller had been our entry we would have got minus points! The UK song was appallingly bad. The girl was so woefully out of tune it was cringeworthy. At least they will be remembered though, even if for all the wrong reasons.
"They won't vote us out because we contribute too much money to the European Broadcasting Union"
Seems like a darn good reason to boycott the event to me.
Mind you our song was performed badly and the actual song appalling.

Well, it just goes to show - my family disagreed with me vehemently when I said that Belgium would do well because if nothing else, their song was a bit different.

Absolutely right. We cheered when Latvia got points from Estonia, leaving us in a thoroughly deserved last place.
It was compulsively funny viewing - the introduction of so many new countries (ex Soviet bloc) has taken the farcical voting to new heights.
And Terry Wogan is a genius at this event.

Terry Wogan- Absoulutly ledgendary, the guy is guniess. He provides every year!
Austria- What the was the guy thinking!!! It was terrible, and how did he end up soo high!!
Germany- Let's be happy and let's be gay, i have been singing that one for hours. It was Ruby Wax on dugs!
The voting- it was so political this year and, greece and cypris, norway and sweeden all shared pionts. We obviously scored nothing, but we are still in next year because we provide the funds for it!!!
Jemmini- Our entry, they were an absoulte discrace, crap song, crap show, crap performane. Good legs though! I hate the way they had the audacity to plug the single and run around happily with the british flag on bbc3 after the show!! They brought shame to the great object!
:veryangry

I quite liked the Belgian entry, it was original and actually quite melodic. All of the others were in a really narrow pitch range meaning the singer could easily get it in key, and still they didn't
That's one option- enter Rick Waller and threaten every country that he'll sit on their capital city unless they vote for us.

No harm done: I just cannot get my head round why or how people can devote so much energy to such a lot of raging TOSH, both writing about it and sitting through the thing in the first place.
I can only assume that it's mainly youngsters on here who weren't around at the time of Puppet on a String or, more horrendously, Sing Little Birdie by Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson in 1959. No, I don't remember the year - I had to look it up - I just remember them doing it.
This "contest" must be the most dysfunctional programme on global television and I really see no future for it in its present form. God, you lot really need to get out more - except Riccardo perhaps: his problem was that he came back in again!

He replied, hyped on booze or whatever "I am very disappointed, I am not happy at all, I HATE Eurovision, obviously Europe are not ready for me yet, I am disappointed, me, I only got 6th place, I can't believe it, I hate Eurovision, F*CK!"

I can't believe we got 'nul points'. Actually, I can. Jemini were rubbish. Not only was it a poor song, not only were they a couple of bland choppers, but they couldnt even sing properly. I'd not heard the song beforehand, knew nothing about them, but I was ashamed how bad they were, and after a couple of rounds of voting, I just knew it was going to be embarrassing. But nul points! We might as well have put up 'My Lovely Horse'.
Wogan was on top form. Forget the country, but loved his comment of 'Watch out for a couple of butch wallopers in the background' and his critique of the backing troupes. But even he had his work cut out on Jemini. Even Tatu sang better.
Funny thing was the B.B.C. news programme the next morning, when they had Cheryl Baker trying to find nice ways of saying 'It's the worst song we've ever had, and goddammit they couldn't even sing in tune'. Yesterday they even had Jemini in the studio so the patronising presenters could say 'Chin up!' to them. Pitiful.
The Turks' entry was all right. Didn't think much of the loo roll dance that went with it. Sadly, I remembered Ceefax's lyrics subtitles just that too late to make the most of the Austrian entry (it was about monkeys, cats and dogs insofar as I could tell). I really like the Estonian one the Joe Jackson-style band doing 'Eighties Coming Back' I even voted for it. But that came nowhere.
Pah. We wuz robbed. And the worst thing is: we deserved it.

Austria's Lyrics:
Man is the measure of all things
I like most animals on this earth
But I really prefer little rabbits and bears
Soon all birds and beetles will die
But Adam's in bed with Eve busy reproducing
Rabbits live in the woods
Cats in the meadows
And cockroaches
Live under tiles
Little rabbits have short noses
And kittens soft paws
And Mother Holle likes her wool
From the african dromedary
The difference between animals such as apes and primates
Is no bigger than between noodles and pasta
But whoever wants to know more about animals should study Biology or inform
himself on my homepage
Some animals have wings
And others have fins
Some live outdoors
And others in cans
Small rabbits
