Yehp had an afternoon, going back in time, via music.

There i was a wide eyed 16/17. Some older mates of mine took me to a pub, in east dulwich, psychadelic lights everywhere, heavy heavy rock to a tightly packed in bunch of drug tripping, joint smoking, for want of a better word 'hippies", Standing on a beer soaked floor, dodging the "mandy" rolling stoneheads, as they stumbled amongst the hairy mob.

It gave me ear damge that place, but boy what an introduction to music.

Led zep, pink floyd, black sabbath, uriah heep, ELP, Yes, Deep Purple, Jimi. CSNY, It just went on and on.

Did anyone else go to the Magdala. ?

Where was your 1st mass venue for music ?

Probably 'The Venue' in New Cross - in those days it was all Nirvana/Red Hot Chilli Peppers/Pearl Jam. Three floors, loads of grungy girls and bottles of Cider. It would be interesting to know what sort of stuff they play in there now ?

The first gig I went to with friends was in 88,I was 12 years old and saw David Lee roth on his skyscraper tour,my friends liked him because of Van Halen but I wanted to see Steve Vai play guitar...it was awesome. The next gig I saw was Metallica's...and justice for all tour in 88, in 89,I saw the Motley crue Dr feelgood tour and I was then addicted to seeing live music. I much prefer the smaller club/pub gigs as opposed to the arenas

LOL - always brings back memories doesn't it - from being a very small kid listening to music in Brockwell Park to Wembley listening to The Who. First mass venue? First ones that an impact were the West Indian house parties somewhere in Addiscombe as a 17 year old - empty houses taken over by guys with sound systems playing Ska that blew me away, inhaling sweet Jamaican weed, legging it over a garden wall when the police came knocking, walking home to New Addington as some ungodly hour. Never lost my love for Babba Brooks, Prince Buster

Went to the Skyscraper tour too...fantastic, loved DLH and VHalen. He came out flying over the crowd on a giant flying surfboard on wires...fantastic showman !

First gig I went to (only one barring Party in the Park since) was to see Oasis at Finnsbury park with others backing them up such as the Charlatans. Made it feel magical due to the heavy rain and alcohol tents getting well used. Lost my mate from work on the way home but rock (if Oasis count as rock) type concerts are the best.

Saying that Party in the park was a lovely day too!

Nirvana @ Reading c1991 was pretty special to me. Lots of drunken nights at The Stairway in South Croydon and gigs at Priddys Yard.

Mong!

The Kursall, Southend. 1976. Dr Feelgood. I was 11. Got passed above the crowd and sat on the side of the stage watching Lee Brilleaux (RIP), Wilco Johnson, The Big Figure and John B. Sparks. Fell in love with REAL R&B right there and then.

I used to go to the Magdala back in the early eighties, but that was when it was full of "Soul Boys". My brother used to take me to another pub that was up behind the Magdala called The Uplands Tavern, which used to have a brilliant blues band on most weekends.

Reading was my first festival, I used to do the gate security. My first year was 1978 and the last time was 1990. Lots of good memories from those times.

Does anybody recall a heavy metal pub somewhere between Sydenham and Downham ? It was complete dive and we only ever went there occasionally as nervous and awkward looking 16 old years to try (usually unsuccessfully) to score speed during the 80's. It was located off a dual carriage way with no other shops anywhere near it and it's clientele were the the absolute dregs of society, or at least they certainly looked it to me at the time. I recall being offered a sniff of somebody's amyl nitrate in the toilets which made my head feel like it was about to explode; of course, looking back, accepting amyl from strange men in public toilets is not an alltogether sensible thing to be doing from the sort of characters that received most of their intimacy from within the confines of prison cells but I was particularly naive in those days.

Is it still these ? Anybody know it's name ?

Do you mean the pub in Champion Hill? I think it was called the Saxon Chief.

Which is slightly better than what it was when I went back for a visit in the late eighties. That time it was full of very dodgy looking West Indians, reggae blaring out, and it all went quiet when two white faces walked in one door, and straight back out the other.

Cheers matey!! i used to go there, The Saxon, as Maidstoned mentioned, it was in Southend Lane, Lower Sydenham/Bellingham, sadly now defunct, and been pulled down to become a Lidl store, not such a bad thing really, it was a dive, although anywhere that played rock music was welcome, as not many venues catered for it, you had to put up with it.

The Saxon was a legend. It was burnt down and now there is one of those German discount Supermarkets on the site.

Doh, just seen CE's post. Dont get Pubs like the Saxon anymore though.

My first introduction to live music came in October 1978, as a schoolboy just discovering decent music, found Hawkwind were playing at the Fairfield, had heard Space Ritual cos a mate had it, went to see them, it totally blew me away, to this day i remain an avid Hawkwind fan, bordering on obsession, hence the avatar.

9 years old I sneaked into the Crystal Palace garden party to see the Faces and Pink Floyd. Didn't have a clue what I was listening to at the time but these are lifelong favourites.

You threw me with that one elwiss, cos when i knew of it, it was more a skinhead/suedehead venue (aka slade and their ilk). Just around the corner from slug hill school. or is that sedge hill, hopefully thats the right joint.

On the subject of music, my good lady wife and I witnessed a truly enjoyable performance at "Hever Castle" last night entitled the "Ella Fitzgerald Songbook".

The "Johnny Pearce Quartet" and the lady singers were quite magnificent and the outdoor theatre was "Packed to the gunwales".

Marvellous Fayre.
