I will definitely be going, last year was class, and Prince has been lined up to headline the main stage one night this year and I want to see him.
Apparently the headliners are Oasis, Paul McCartney and Prince. Not as good as last year, but I'm still gonna get a ticket. :)

That's what was rumoured on the closing morning of this year's one, yeah.
Getting tickets is going to be a nightmare every year from now on, irrespective of line-up, no-one will dare to leave it longer than a day fater what happened this year.

It certainly is a bummer if you are unlucky and get your tent turned over or bag pinched or whatever... but the strict ticket enforcement policy has kept 99% of the scally tent robbers out and crime was massively down in 2003. Also they have loads of extra security on lookouts towers and campsite patrols etc. etc.
The police are also getting far more 'hands on' in the festival... which is good for crime prevention but not so good for people doing erm... 'naughty stuff', watch out for those black labradors sitting down next to you ;)

ARSE!
The provisional dates for my 2nd year finals are the Thursday and Friday of that week. I thought having them on the Monday and Tuesday of that same week this year was cutting it fine. Looks like I'll be either skipping Glastonbury, or finding a new university to study at :bash:
Not sure I'm that bothered about those headliners though, I saw Oasis at Shepherd's Bush 2 years ago, not really sure that I would want to see them somewhere 30 times the size (Finsbury Park, Wembley Stadium, Glastonbury). Would like to see Paul McCartney, I suppose, but his set will be all over the telly anyway.
The 2003 line-up was so good that I doubt next year's could be any better, in my eyes.

Not if they don't show it, they only showed the World Cup Final during act breaks in 2002, they originally said they wouldn't promise to show anything, even if England had been there. I would not expect a 90 minute football break on the Pyramid Stage in the middle of Friday evening, if that's when we play.

England vs. Columbia in World Cup 1998 was watched by the single largest audience anywhere in the world... in Glastonbury.
Mind you it was f ucking really really wet and I would have given anything to have been in a nice warm pub with dry clothes on :)
They admitted they would have shown the Cup Final 2002 if England had been in it, there are lots of Cinema indoor and outdoor screens to show it on plus various cafes and bars and stuff that would wheel out tellys.

Well I don't think I would bother seeing any of those three (although I have seen Prince once before)...
But that is the thing about Glasto... NOT just standing by the main stage ticking off the list of big acts and this years 'must sees' that you have done, but getting into any of the hundreds of little tents and happenings with mad bands on all through the day and night, all over the festival.
I had a great time in 2003 watching The Damned in some little Avalon tent with a few hundred others while a hundred thousand watched Radiohead on the Pyramid.

That's not what Michael Eavis said at the time, there was a petition online with thousands of signatures from people who wanted them to show the final, and a lot said things like "I wasn't born in 1966, this might be my only chance", had England got there, but he had said that the cinema area was too small to show the final, and they didn't want to show it on the Pyramid stage screens because the acrs would already have started by then.
A Wooden Fish On Wheels
03-12-2003, 03:20 PM
Yeah what I meant was that Eavis admitted after the event that they would have shown it if it was England in it.
I suppose I can see the argument that it is a music festival and tens of thousands of people were not able to get tickets so why should they cancel music to show football - but that would ignore the whole football / popular culture mix which wouldn't be right.
Well I'll have to stick the old 12 volt portable in the motor and pop up to the car and watch it - besides it won't be the final this year, and I'm sure they will squeeze in a quarter final on the cinema screen on the Friday when a lot of people are still turning up etc.

Glastonbury ticket details announced
Last updated 23 January 2004
Tickets for Glastonbury will go on sale on April 1 with special arrangements to try and avoid tickets being sold on at huge prices.
Listen to Kevin Geoghegan's report
Requires Realplayer G2
This year, they will only be sold through a phoneline and on one website with each transaction being closely monitored.
Last year, Glastonbury sold out within 24 hours and many tickets ended up on Ebay, the auction website, for up to four times their face value. Many other websites were also selling them at an extra profit.
This year, tickets are being restricted to two per person and tickets will be personalised to prevent them being sold on - there will be checks at the gates.
They will cost £112 (plus booking fee) and will go on sale at 8pm on April 1.
On the website, festival organiser Michael Eavis says he hopes the sytem will work:
"The measures we are taking this year will result in a much fairer way to access the Festival, which promises to be as always, an incredibly joyful way to spend your mid-summer!"
Basemant Jaxx have already confirmed to Radio 1 that they will be performing at the festival which takes place over the last weekend in June.

Hope my exam times are confirmed by then, I was planning to buy a ticket and then sell it if I couldn't make it, looks like that won't be an option now, unless they're prepared to allow refunds to point of sale.
Plenty of people moaning on the Radio 1 website about the 2 per person limit: makes perfect sense to me. I wonder if you have to give the name of your guest when you buy them, as well.

You are joking aren't you?
So out of hundreds and hundreds of acts (thousands if you include all the little tents and theatre and stuff) over 3 or 4 days on about 10 different stages... you are going to miss it because of 3 headline acts on the main stage?
Last year I think I saw one band on the main stage, the year before that none, I don't think you understand what Glastonbury is all about - but then you can have your 100% grunge weekender at Reading, you wouldn't want the danger of strumbling across something different eh?

Glastonbury 2004 Ticketing Update
16 Feb 2004
UPDATE: 16th February 2004
FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGED BETWEEN 13 AND 16.
A parent or guardian will be able to buy a maximum of two Child tickets for children, between the age of 13 and 16, who must be accompanied at the entry gate by an adult sharing the same home address.
Tickets will only be sold by the telephone ticket line 0870 830 2004 and through the web-site address www.aloud.com
Tickets will go on sale at 8 pm on 1st April 2004
Tickets will be restricted to two per person and each transaction will be thoroughly checked
All tickets will be personalised and checks will be made at the gates
Postal orders and cheques will be accepted as payment on the telephone ticket line
Tickets will cost £112 plus booking fee of £3 with an additional cost for postage
Since I made the original announcement, I have decided as a further measure to address the problem of touts, that the Festival will not accept Credit Cards only Debit Cards. By announcing this change now, people have plenty of time to arrange to pay from a debit account.
I am sorry if this change to a debit card only policy causes any problems, but there are benefits for everyone. This measure has allowed the Festival to cut the booking fee charged from £5 to £3 per ticket and should there be any further savings I will pass that money on to the charities and good causes the Festival supports.
Information about how personalised tickets will be checked will be included when the tickets are sent out to ticket buyers and not before for security reasons.
Further guidance will be announced on this site as arrangements are confirmed.
Thank you for your forbearance but all of these changes are made to make real improvements to the ticket sales for this year.

My brother has offered to lend me his camper van this year. Problem is I think the camper van park is outside the festival gates, in other words you are stuck in pikieville with all the ticketless scum bags. Just for the record they are not scum bags because they couldn't get tickets, they just happen to be scum bags intent on robbing those at the festival.
Anyone stayed in this area before or have any idea what the security is like there ?
A Wooden Fish On Wheels
09-03-2004, 03:22 PM
Last year there was no trouble in the camper area... year before there were packs of nutters mugging people, fighting security, throwing rocks etc. etc.
Personally I would feel a bit detached from the festival and all the goings on up there in the camper field, it can be quite a trek back - and it costs extra dough to bring a camper in, plus it will probably take ages to drive there in it :)

There are lots of sounds in the camper field due to the electricity and car radios and stuff available... (oooh porto have just scored! Get in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
I would recommednd getting there early and camping up by the green areas where it tends to be a bit more crowded but less noisy.

Snow Patrol,Franz Ferdinand,Muse are confirmed already.
I want to see what Glasto has lined up for the smaller stages and the smaller groups who are going to play there before I decide. £112 is a lot of money for what is a rather average group of headline acts so far.

Bread and Roses is the one on the big crossroads in the big market? Usually has a little accoustic stage outside and some sort of rave going on opposite?
I can't wait to get going on the Pear Cider next to the World stage again :) - shame they cocked up that bar in the World field though (turned it into a rave bar), that was my favourite place to hang out.

Ticket's on sale this Thursday... make sure you are all prepared with phone numbers and debit cards and web addresses and stuff for the 8pm kick off.
More information about buying tickets from http://www.aloud.com/Glastonbury
Welcome to Aloud.com's official booking service for Glastonbury 2004 where you can access all your essential info for this year's festival.
Aloud.com will be selling Glastonbury 2004 tickets from 8pm on Thursday April 1. Each ticket will cost £112, and a booking fee will be charged at £3 per ticket. There will be an additional charge per order (not per ticket) for registered postage.
If you're booking Glastonbury 2004 tickets on somebody else's behalf you will need to enter the address of the ticket holder(s) on the booking screen. Please do not enter your own address. Tickets will be sent direct to the first named ticket holder, i.e.. the person(s) attending the festival. Please make sure you have the full address of any ticket holder available to you before making your booking.
Aloud.com has received the following communication direct from the festival organizer Michael Eavis, which stipulates the terms and conditions of booking Glastonbury 2004 tickets
Firstly, I confirm the key points announced previously:
Tickets will go on sale at 8 pm on April 1, 2004.
Tickets will cost £112.00 plus £3.00 booking fee and £4.00 postage and packing.
Tickets will only be sold on the telephone ticket line 0870 830 2004 and through the website address - www.aloud.com.
No credit cards can be used, only debit cards. Electron cards will not be accepted.
Postal orders and cheques will be accepted as payment on the telephone ticket line, provided they are received by the ticket agency within five working days of the sale.
Car Parking and campervan/caravan tickets will be available to purchase in the same transaction as the tickets. Car Parking tickets will cost £5 per vehicle and campervan/caravan tickets will cost £40 per vehicle. Only campervans or caravans with fitted sleeping, washing and cooking facilities will be allowed into the campervan field this year. Please check the website for details of which types of vehicles can use these fields.
Tickets sales will be restricted to two per person and per telephone call. Each transaction will be thoroughly checked, and duplicate transactions will be declined - if not at the time of sale, at a later stage.
In addition to the two tickets a parent or guardian can purchase in their own right, they will also be able to buy a maximum of two 'Child tickets'. These tickets are for children between the ages of 13 and16, who must be accompanied at the entry gate by that adult. 'Child tickets' will be the same price as adult tickets. Accompanied children 12 and under are free and do not need a ticket.
All tickets will be personalised and checks will be made at the gates. Details of these checks will be sent out with tickets.
You will need to give a name and address for each person coming to the festival. As there will be no refund or option to change details once tickets are sent out, please be sure all details are accurate when booking tickets. Ticket orders can be cancelled and ticket price refunded until May 20th.
Overseas ticket sales will be handled differently from UK ticket sales. If you are living abroad, you can only buy tickets online using a credit card. Tickets for overseas sales will not be sent out by post, but can be collected from an office in Shepton Mallet. Details of the collection arrangements and the checks that will be carried out will be sent to successful ticket purchasers.
Since I made the original announcement, I have decided as a further measure to address the problem of touts, that the Festival will not accept Credit Cards _ only Debit Cards. By announcing this change now, people have plenty of time to arrange to pay from a debit account.

Around 12,000 being sold per hour.
Should be all gone within 4 hours.
Software issues with the website mean it's running slow...and phone lines are being held up because people are still ringing trying to purchase tickets on their credit cards. DEBIT CARDS ONLY
Keep sticking at it...you'll get through in the end!

Have you checked your e-mail to make sure it didn't go through anyway? That happened to me when I was buying tickets once and the transaction did go through despite the error message, if it had gone through again I would have ended up spending £310 on 10 tickets for the same gig! Fuc* the fuc*ing fuc*ers' fuc*ed!
about an hour ago i phoned my mates to see how they were doing. they said that in the last 15 mins 2 people they knew had got through. as we were speakin one of them got somewhere on the phone and i could hear them all panicking in the background. they said they had to go cos they had got thro and then cut off. i assumed that there was sommink finally budging and i would get thro imminently. now, an hour on and not a ditty. just texted me mate and he said that they had had a false alarm. d1ckheads. bet they just got that recorded message. so this incident and also the 0% success rate of the bbs so far is leading me to wonder if in fact in the past 4 hours i have been anywhere close at all to getting these tickets. i am starting to think not.

SOLD! Just got through and got me two tickets plus a car parking pass. Got through on the international sales number - 01159 934170. Just stick it in the phone and keep hitting redial. Have been doing that for about 30 minutes solid and then got the ringing tone - phone rung for about 5 minutes and then got answered.
Beware though, if you're trying to get tickets for mates - you can only get two tickets per phone call, not just per debit card. So even if you've got mates sitting next to you with their card ready, they'll have to ring up again themselves!

Have been ringing that Notts number to get tix for mates as well - just got thru again and got two tickets for them. Get on that one instead of the web site or the 0870 number - definitely the best way in.

I'm getting two different engaged tones... one higher pitched than the other, I suspect the lower tone means I am getting 'further'. But I am dialed into the internet so I'm redialling on my mobby which is slower.
I'd recommend ditching the Internet altogether - have been on there since 8 and got no further than the 'there are not enough tickets' message. The site is lame and totally incapable of coping with demand. I'd say get on a phone with a fast redial and ring that 0115 number. As I type, my missus has just got thru for a third (and final!) time to get some more for mates. Good luck guys!

Sometimes I wish I had been at Glastonbury, but I suspect that the event has now eclipsed music on offer ( debatable whether Paul McCartney headlining has proved or disproved my argument). Akin to people going to the latest "must see" film and talking all the way through it.

I'm suprise that Eavis is now rubbing our noses in it... But he told BBC Radio Five Live that it was not necessarily desirable to sell the tickets as fast as possible.
"We can improve the software, definitely - but is it a good thing to sell them all out in one hour?
"We could have sold them out last night in five minutes, but is that a good thing? I don't think it is you know, I'd rather string it out a bit." Try telling that to the people like me who sat up from 8pm until 6am - I wasted a days work the next day (no doubt pissing my boss off in the process who was expecting me in), then my mate spent all day trying and wasted another days work. I think Eavis has completely failed to appreciate the stress, frustration, tiredness, anger and other physical and mental suffering caused by this completely unnecessary farce.
Instead of gloating about how he 'strung it out a bit' he should be apologising unreservably and promising to sort it out for future years.
nickmurphy30
05-04-2004, 12:28 PM
I don't think Eavis realises how much he has frustrated people - and his remarks above are crass to the point of stupidity.
However for next year...
What about a lottery - like for some internationals - where anyone who wants to go can apply in advance. You can build in exactly the same security safeguards as this year but without the mania to but tickets. It would be much fairer as well. ( Eg for the poor souls without computers.)
A Wooden Fish On Wheels

I think the only real way forward is to reduce the demand. I would go to the festival regardless of who is playing as long as there are 3 or 4 small bands I want to see over the whole weekend. I think they should tone it down by not booking 'headliners'.
Has everyone who paid by debit card beeen billed yet? Nothing has shown in my account and I booked it on the net on Friday. I even went into the bank to ask if there were any debits that were there but not showing yet. They said no :(
So I've been trying to phone the glastonbury customer support line all day and guess what? It's engaged!!
The only problem I can forsee now is that I gave the wrong issue number for my card (1 when it should have been 2) just hope that they don't stop the tickets coming my way.//

Dunno if that would work though - people are already buying their tickets blind without having any real idea what bands are going to be playing. The fact is, most people go for the festival first, and the music second.
Personally, I think they should just appoint four or five ticket agencies next year, thus reducing the pressure on a single agent. There's no sensible reason to have just one ticket agent, and about a million reasons why it's a crap idea.
As for the debit card question - my online account shows a pending payment for the right amount, but I can't yet see that it's definitely for Glasto. Mind you, I booked over the phone. I would guess they might be checking all the web bookings for duplicates before charging loads of cards and then having to do a bunch of charge-backs.
It had better not bloody rain. :veryangry

Unfortunately you can't transfer tickets, they are personalised and have to be accompanied by ID to get entrance to the festival. Lots of people are paying £300+ for useless tickets from tout-scum on ebay. I doubt they are protected legally as the reselling of tickets is illegal anyway.

Although they have not announced the security arrangements yet, neither did they stipulate them as a condition of sale and therefore you could probably sue them if they didn't let you in.
There are plenty of people without passports or driving licences etc. - and any idiot can scan in a gas bill and reprint it with a new name and address. Besides, 115,000 people plus another 50,000 or so traders and staff etc. are all going to be entering the site in a space of 48 hours or so... are they really going to check everyone? If you get through all the car park checks and park up and walk the mile and a half to the entrance, are they really going to turn you away because you can't prove that you are who is (supposedly) going to be printed on the ticket?
Nah, it's all crap, a fair attempt at trying to put the shits up people to stop them from trading tickets on ebay but not enforceable in real life.

If you managed to order tickets check your email address used at submission - it seems the ticket fiasco is continuing. They asked me to resubmit the name of my guest - nice idea having names on them but it does open the way for errors/complications.

FIFA tried a similar 'names on tickets' security approach to the France '98 World Cup, but I don't know in practice whether they genuinely did demand ID on admission, and turn people away if they couldn't produce it.
Anyone have any more info on this?
Agree though that unless it was a condition of sale that correct ID must be produced on entry, then it would never stand up in court, as Leslie Grantham might say.

People who have travelled miles for one festival are not just going to walk away on the say so of a student with an Oxfam coat on.
But if they are going to be strict would they not just be creating another community of angry people who cant get in something which happened a couple of years back and puts future festivals in jeopardy.

Here's the 'we're not really going to do it' bit...
Please be aware that ID will be checked on entering the wristband exchange, which is inside the super fortress fence, and NOT before. We ask that you do not get your ID out before reaching this point; but make sure you know where it is and have easy access to it.
It is intended all ticket holders will be checked, however we can guarantee in excess of 50% of festival goers will be subject to identification checks.

'New' tent is stretching it a bit, isn't it?
Or are they referring to the canvas itself?

Yeah they called it 'the new bands tent' for the last two or three years - it was most confusing, apparently it meant 'the new tent for bands'. Now renamed The New Tent it means just that.

It's gone so far down that route that I was even pondering whether there was any way to get in watch Paul McCartney this year. However, I understand that just picking up a ticket on the day is not really the done thing ...
Even I would acknowledge that people like me should be banned from the place.
Isn't it about time Quo were invited to play ?

That's weird, last year the only band I saw in the New Tent that I had heard of were I Am Kloot, all the others were up and coming acts hence the reduced crowding there. This year they have wheeled out a bunch has-beens with some almost made-its. Odd.

The New Bands Tent was far from exclusively for new bands- I saw the Buffseeds in there who weren't new, and Death In Vegas were one of the headliners, who also weren't new.
Yeah, as Stellavista said - it's never been a tent just for new bands.
It's the New Bands-Tent, rather than the New-Bands Tent, if you see what I mean. It's just the most recent addition to the music tents and stages.
I saw Tricky close last year's festival in that tent, and he's certainly not new!

It's the same old story, the things about the festival that made it great are slowly being eroded, or sidelined.
The line-ups have become more and more mainstream, and the site is full of knobends who appear to look upon the more left-field events that go on there as just 'good for a laugh' or fun to take the p*ss out of.
The BBC coverage is p*ss poor, Wiley should be f*cking shot, and the suburban masses should stick to high street pub chains and holidays on the Costas.

So you have been since 1990 - or do you just assume. I personally haven't seen people take the piss out of the left-field/alternative events.
And if you don't like the BBC coverage - come along and see for yourself how much fun the 'ungroovy' masses are having.
Yeah it has got more mainstream but there are 100's of acts which are not - stick to them.

The festival has lost some of the atmosphere created by the more anarchic elements - the crusties have moved back to Mummy and Daddy's mansion, Saturday night is no longer 'trippers night', the hotknife (50p a blim) tents are all gone along with aggressive begging, masses of tent theft, bikes roaring round the site, dogs shitting everywhere, enormous bonfires of plastic plates, too few bogs, too many people, food that made you ill, axe throwing competitions, mad dog biker hill, hash for cash, cash for hash, cokehashspeed, the Mutoid Waste Company, burning the wicker man and mud slides.
Ah those were the days :D

Got back late last night. Didn't get wet at all, until walking back to the car then got absolutely soaked. Wore a pair of pyjamas home. Talking of pears, also consumed rather a lot of them too in cider format. Top music (Levellers - oustanding! Ben Harper, Damien Rice all stunning), proper laughs and great mates, and loads of looking at random stuff that you just don't see anywhere else. And heck, mud is actually quite good fun when you're wearing wellies...! Can't wait for next year!

Hope you all enjoyed it.
I watched a lot of the Sunday coverage on TV, after having got home from university, and got most of the Supergrass and Muse sets on tape. Muse looked as impressive as they were at Wembley last year, I'd be interested to know what anyone unfamilar with their stuff thought.

It was muddy.
In true fashion I missed most of the big acts, I thought that Chumbawamba in the Lost Vagueness Ballroom (sometime in the early hours of Sunday morning) were bloody brilliant, Morrissey was fantastic (20 years since I had seen him :)) and Billy Bragg on the Leftfield stage was wicked and ting (who I first saw 20 years ago).

I got back yesterday and am still a bit worse for wear. Great time though. The mud didn't spoil it at all, as long as there's beer and drugs and more beer, and a few bands, and hippies, and Krishnas, and lots of fun people, then you can't go wrong. Can't wait for next year.

I was there with some other Palace fans (and a bloke who decided to support Chelsea). I didn't wear colours down there - festival culture and football has never been as easy mix for me, but the Palace baseball cap was being worn in our party all weekend and was used to full effect on some Seaweed in the Billy Bragg crowd on Sunday. We were trying to get the hat on stage to make Bragg feel better about West Ham losing the final but in the end we donated it to a Notts. County fan who let us sit round his fire all weekend :)

I had an amazing time! Hello to Putney Eagle who was camped right next to us! I think I enjoyed every band I saw which was quite a lot. Yeah my mate saw the palace flag during Franz Ferdinand! Dunno who it was tho. I didn't see any palace fans but was on the look out. I did see a hammer fan while walking back from James Brown tho, and gave it a sly little 'Eagles!' behind his back before disappearing into the mud

The hardest part is getting a ticket, Mike - then you just stick a change of clothes in a bag with a cheap tent and a sleeping bag, a few quid for some grub and drink then jump on a coach or whatever. You can drive from Croydon in not much more than 2 hours.
It is a strange Glastonbury phenomena where people somehow think they can't go - they will tell you it is their life times ambition, then spend the next six months making excuses and convincing themselves it is unattainable.

Yeah no worries, once they get the license granted for 2005 I'll start a Glastonbury 2005 thread :)
I am seriously thinking about running a stall down there next year.
As I see the benefits are:
a) Guaranteed stress free purchase of tickets for people working on the stall
b) The ability to drive on site with a van full of luxury items (booze, cooking stuff, duvets, spare clothes, posh tents, food etc. etc.)
c) Not having to carry anything
d) The possibility to make Glastonbury fund itself or possibly even make a few quid out of it
e) Could still shut the stall and go and see bands / get smashed when we want to
f) Having a laugh and meeting lots of interesting people
g) Posh Toilets for traders (no, not 'toilet traders' - that's something different ask Trolley)
The argument against:
a) might lose a load of money
b) lots of organising to get everything together
c) would have to take more time off work (could be seen as an argument for ;))
The catch is... I haven't thought of what we would sell :D
It would have to be:
a) something non-perishable (as I can't be arsed with hiring fridges and stuff)
b) Something small - I only want to take a couple of vans down and I only want the smallest pitch available as they cost a fortune
c) Something that will be popular and sell quickly for a profit
What do you think out there?

The best deal I saw when I was there was £1 (I think) for a pint of squash, with few dozen flavours available: it felt quite cheap compared with other stuff (e.g. a bottle of water), but they probably still made plenty of money out of it. So I'd do that, if I ran a stall there.

One service that I reckon would be successful, which doesn't involve opening a stall as such, would be to hire out "ready pitched" tents. Charge say £50 for a £30 tent, readily pitched on the site. The beauty there is that you only have one initial outlay because you can use the same tents year after year. One of the big chores at Glasto is lugging everything from car to site then having to put the buggers up. I reckon it would be a right good moneyspinner!

True, but you'd have to really well publicise it, otherwise people wouldn't know to turn up without a tent. And could you really charge £50 for a few days use of a £30 tent? I could understand that price if they could take the tent home with them.
