I'm considering spending a considerable sum of money buying a PS2. But first of all I have to justify to myself that paying £415 for a ps2 with 2 controllers, memory card and 3 games is worth it.
Does anyone else have a PS2 out there? Is it worth the money? Opinions on games you have played and any advice on where to get one any cheaper than this would be great help - does anyone know about the when first ps2 pricecut is expected?

Hi m8, I have one and if I was you id personaly wait as the games that are out for it at the moment arnt very good. Most of the games are ps1 games with improved graphics and there are only 2 or 3 good games out at the moment.

ive got a ps2.ive got 1 game - iss pro and its pretty crap.there arent too many good games(if any)out at the moment but there are some realy good games in the pipeline that might justify buying one.its a similar senario to when the first playstation came out - look at the very early ps1 games now and they look crap compared to the ones that are coming out nowadays.given time it will be worth the money-look at it this way it can only get better.

Ive got one, and although there is only a few games worth buying for it now (ISS, Zone of the Enders, SSX and Moto GP), most of the 'must haves' are beginning to be released about now. I say get one, the price you were quoted is quite good, but it depends on the games that come with it.
Is it a free choice of what games you get with it?

Sort of - its £300 for the console plus Tekken (which I want anyway), £20 for sony analog controller, £25 for memory card, and I can any games at £34 to £36.
Need a footy game, and Fifa2001 is poop, so ISS is my second game....but the third...GT3, ZOtE...SSX...choices choices.

GT3 wont be out for a few months. Get ZOE as your third game, if only for the incredible Metal Gear Solid 2 demo.
Good game too

yup, I don't know why they bother releasing the crap arcade version of ISS. The one in October is by the same people who make ISS Evolution so is likely to be brilliant.
I might just have to get a PS2 so I can play it, but ISS Pro Evolution 2 on PS1 should last me a while, its much harder than the first one.

I will help Forssell's No1 Fan by clarifying the situation.
Although ISS Pro is made by Konami, it has been taken by ESPN (that sh!ty american TV channel) and has been slightly changed. The reason...so that Konami and ESPN would make money out of the launch of PS2.
I have a PS2, so this is what I think:
SSX - Seriously good game. Worth the money.
Track&Field2 - Nothing special, good fun for a short time. A little expensive for a rather limited game.
FIFA 2k- Good graphics, same shoddy game. Sadly, I am now playing the old PS1 ISS Pro Evolution game, as it is a much better game.
Fantavision - Alright, good fun for a short time. A little confusing, and VERY japanese.

Save your money and get a Dreamcast. They are an absolute steal at the moment, with some places doing a system and 6 games for £149.
The games on the Dreamcast far exceed that of the PS2. The PS2 may well have its day, but its a big IF, so take the best option of the present.
Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Metropolis Street Racer.
Sony, Nintendo, Atari. Your Boys took One Hell of a Beating

Playstation2 isnt worth the money, but there arent any alternatives unless you want a Dreamcast which isnt manufactured anymore.
I personally wouldn“t buy a console with such crap games. But you do get a DVD with it(not the best but still a DVD).
Maybe a cheap Dreamcast would be a descent purchase. There are numerous good games for it out now.

I was going to say that the first person to say 'get a Dreamcast, cos its great value' gets a slap. Good value, I'm sure, but there's a reason for that. Skoda's are good value, too, and not bad cars I've heard...but most people wouldn't spend money on them for a reason.
Anyway - the above mentioned games, plus a couple of others are at this moment being ported from Dreamcast to PS2. Sega's strong point was always its games, not the consoles. Ahem.

the Ps2 is poo. One year on and still no games. For 400 pounds, you can have my hardly touched machine, 3 games, 3 controllers, mem card etc.....
All boxed, mint condition.
Is an original jap machine, plays US DVD's but not UK. Has a mod chip too, but I havent fitted that yet.
Save your money, buy a Game Boy Advance.

Talking of ISS, I went out and bought ISS Pro Evolution 2 for my PSX the other day, only to find that apart from having real player names, and slightly different (still crap) commentry, the game is EXACTLY the same!
I feel ripped off.
Oh, it now has injuries. As Mr Forrsell found out to his peril as I hacked him down on the edge of the area in an England v Finland spoof.

Jaffa, I am not belittling the DC. I have played on it and it is an excellent console, with a some excellent games. However, I am not willing to pay out for it when I know that there are almost no more games coming out for it...ever. Fewer and fewer retailers are now stocking a large range of DC games, and the net connectivity of the DC is not something I am desperate to have, as I already have a pc and despite a huge range of games, very rarely play online (slow modem connection on counterstrike = dead).
I have very fond memories of sega, but I am not buying a DC.

at the current rate Sony are going, I'll be 30 years older than I am now by the time they've released as many quality games as on DC.

How do i format a memory card on PS2, i have a good footy management game, but cant save it because the memery card hasnt been formated. The game doesnt give you options to format the card. Is there a way of doing it before you load the game?

All these quoted games are to be released on the PS2 soon, as well as the future games. This is due to Sega stopping production of the Dreamcast. Get a PS2 and you'll be able to play ALL of the good games

Err ... there's over a 100 games on the schedule to come out over the next twelve months Bud for the DC, and some top ones on the list as well.
Got Unreal Tournament on the DC at the weekend and it's on a par with the excellent PC version.
Check out Phantasy Star as well ! - and simple is usually best ... Mr Driller !!

could have something to do with the fact its DEAD and Sega are developing games for the PS2 now....
and the ps2 is an all round more powerful machine than the Dreamcast, just look at Metal gear 2 for anti-alising...

"Worried", MGS2 seems to be the one game every PS2 Owner is clinging onto in the vain hope he might be someday able to play a good game. There have been many games that have had a lot expected of them, but turned out to be ****. Rise of The Robots was one, a long while back. Apart from this, I see nothing that excites me.
The Dreamcast however, already has a great back catalogue, and there are new games coming out for it. Also, the Dreamcast technology has been sold to some set-top box manufacturers, and so will be seen in a number of cheap guises. S/W production for it should be steady.

"Worried", just caught your post after I had posted mine.
Anyway, you list a whole load of titles there, and call them A list? MTV Music Generator for christs sake. QuakeIII and UnrealT, got them for my DC already. Same with MDK2. Modem, built in already. A whole lot of them titles may be **** too. They arent guaranteed successes.
If you want to be pedantic, how about the great titles shipping for Dreamcast this year? Ill exclude the ones that you have listed for PS2 as well (even though CT is v.1 and not v.2)
Soldier of Fortune
Black and White
Jet Grind Radio 2
Alien Front Online
Alone In The Dark: New Adventure
Capcom vs SNK II
Ultimate Fighting Championship Tapout
Half Life
Daytona 3
Sonic Adventure II
NBA2k2
NHL2k2
NFL2k2
Virtua Tennis 2
Propeller Head Online
House of the Dead III
And possibly... NiGHTS 2.
Not bad.

Did you buy a Betamax video recorder too ?
Keep clinging onto the hope that one day your investment in the PS2 will be worthwhile.

ooops, I forgot about Soldier of Fortune on PS2.
Those games are the games that I consider 'A list', a lot of them would be considered by others to be the same too.
The reason for MTV music is that I loved the original Music 'game', so I can't wait for the new one.

Looks like this thread has gone from a bit of advice, to a 'mines better than yours' one...
Can't we just be friends and play our own consoles and enjoy them ourselves.
That is all.

Nothing on this thread as convinced me to shell out £400 on a PS2. Got a high end DVD player at home anyway so don't need it for that, still having plenty of fun with the N64 (I don't think its dated compared with what DC and IS2 have out), I also have a IS1 with plenty of games, including my personal favourite Tomb Raider (original).
I also need to fork out for a PC at home pretty shortly, so would not consider allocating £400 from that pot of money.
Its the undeniable fact that Sony have rushed out IS2 with limited titles (most revamps) in a wave of publicity, arrogantly expecting a world of mugs to buy the product. Overall I suspect most of those that would have killed their grandma for one at Christmas are a little disappointed. Even those that may blindly defend it to the hilt.
On top of the N64, which had its problems, and is too cutesy and lacking in gore titles (Turok excepted), I am considering playing the Amiga again for old times sake.
Personally, I would consider the IS2 when its
down to £150 and there are a few quality (Zelda, Tomb Raider) titles it can truly call its own. Not Fifa w@nk 12 or WCW rip off 14.
These original titles will test the power of the machine because people will have to write code from scratch and will push the limitations
of the available memory, not just convert or tweak data that others more talented invented.

The PS2 will be worth it eventually. All the companies that made great games for PS1 haven't just dissappeared, they're all working on PS2 games. Once they turn their attention fully towards the PS2 they'll be some cracking games to come.
And you can buy loads of great PS1 games for your PS2 at bargain prices, while you wait for the top titles to arrive.
Having said that I won't be buying a PS2 unless the above happens and some top notch games come out.

The ISS for the PS2 is called 'Winning Eleven,' go to www.dailyradar.co.uk, (http://www.dailyradar.co.uk,) to see some shots of it. If it looks as good as this when it comes out then my PS2 is worth the money.
Evolution 2: let's be honest, if you love the other ISS titles you were going to buy it...let's just hope it wins over the FIFA philostines....West Ham in the Master League though? Do me a favour....
I only play one PS2 game, SSX, but there are some top titles coming out in the next few months, Metal Gear etc, and the DVD player is adequate, so that increases the vfm rating.
Just got to wait and see what Gatesy's Xbox is like.....
