Definitely one of the best bands I've ever seen live, but I only saw them a few months ago, so not going to Brixton.
What was all that about Pete ?
toms rockin
27-02-2004, 04:57 PM
basically he went on the message board of babyshambles and said all gigs cancelled because of heart break lover peter. (i will post the link in a minute). No one new if he meant the secret 1s he had plannd of the full tour which had a lot of people pissing themselves including myself.
It all seems sorted now though because he put another post up saying he is ok.

I saw them twice over christmas, one excellent, one not so much. But yes definitely the best live band in the UK at the moment (I'm not really able to substantiate this). Going to see them next Thursday in Bristol. They keep getting bigger despite the fact its been ages since they brought out Up The Bracket - by the time the second album comes out they're gonna be huge.
Not bad for a band who had one of their singers thrown in jail for burgling the other one's house.

Yeah, one of my good mates is a massive fan and goes round all their gigs and says that there has been "trouble in the camp this week" but that it all should be fine. Best be cos I got my tickets off e-bay for twice face value.

Yes and to be quite honest they are shit. It is my opinion that the Libertines only manage to be that fricking amazing band by Pete and Carl being a bit loopy when together.
Babyshambles sessions clearly show some potential for good songs but they only really come alive when done live or recorded - just compare the version of Don't Look Back Into the Sun on Babyshmables to the version they do live. Completely different

How did you manage that?
My standing tickets for the Bristol gig are £22 quid a pop off of e-bay and I bought them two weeks ago. Oh well, it will be worth it.
toms rockin
27-02-2004, 05:36 PM
i must say some of the babyshambles stuff is a bit crappy but some of it i find good just because it shows what stuff they can do. Must say though some of the live stuff i have heard of the stuff on it is much better.

I wouldn't worry too much, it was quite good when we saw them but that was mainly for comic value I think. Until that point I never thought I would hear Snooker Loopy done live. Unfortunately, I am yet to hear a very good support act with the Libs, are Kill City doing any of the Brixton gigs? I didnt think much of them I have to say.
Riccardo

Kill City are one of the support acts. Dunno them.
Poosence
27-02-2004, 05:44 PM
Kill City are good mates with the Libertines and so seem to play at a lot of gigs they do. They have a female lead singer who can occasionally look quite attractive but ither than that they are fairly average. If you're very lucky you'll get 4ft tall Rabbi coming on to sing Sally Brown.
toms rockin
27-02-2004, 05:46 PM
the kills lead singer had a baby with pete hence them being good friends.
Selfishcunt are supporting on the friday though if thats any help and im pretty sure wolfman is doing the saturday. (you may of heard his single with Pete)

His taste in music is impeccable but in football...not so good. He's a big gooner and so the chances of getting him to post here may be tough. I'm sure you'll bump into him if you go to a lot of libs gigs, I haven't heard him talk about anything other than them in about 4 months.

I couldn't agree more... quite how this band manages to get so much attention is beyond me. The NME can't get their heads out of Pete and Carl's arses, just like with with the Strokes a couple of years ago. One of the reasons why after being a loyal reader for many years I got bored with that rag a long time ago.

Well of course you are entitled to your opinion but I wasn't exactly convinced by them until I saw them live. What ever you think about their music you have to admit that they have provided one of the best rock and roll soap operas for quite some time.
Whilst this may not be your thing, that energy does really come across at their gigs. They are not the best singers or musicians and there may be more "talented" songwriters knocking about but the Libertines are just really exciting to watch at the moment. And once you're hooked, a little exploration of their back catalogue reveals that they do have some really good songs.
P.S. I don't read NME

Saw the Libertines last night at Bristol Colston Hall. Absolutely fricking brilliant. Worked out pretty well having a mate to get me back stage. Chatted to the support band a lot (the Cherubs - very cool) and then went and spoke to the band. They're all suprisingly nice chaps and Carl let a few of us back up to his hotel room for more drinks. Gary seems to have messed up his arm and is worried about the Brixton gigs but all in all it was the best night I've had in ages. Best band in the country at the moment, seriously.
Hope it all goes well for those who are doing Brixton tonight :p .

so ... anyone go tonight??
what did everyone think about the gig tonight? wasnt blown away but didnt expect to come out thinking it was the best gig ive been to. anything on a sunday night to a not sold out crowd and listening to a band which had played 2 nights there previously wasnt always going to be awesome.
but i still maintain, having just got back from a year of travelling the globe, that the libertines are the best british band out at the moment (apart from coldplay) think ive caught up what ive missed in the last year e.g. athlete, darkness, lamb, the thrills etc and none have even come close.
feel glad that at last ive seen them live but a lot of what you get from the record is lost live (especially at brixton) dont know how much of pete smashing his guitar and storming off for a couple of songs was staged but they certainly lacked his voice and rhythm.
in summary, if the next album is as good as the first (as a couple of the new songs tonight promised) then the libertines have the potential to storm the world. just wish the bands these days could be as prolific as they used to be then we would be able to compare from decade to decade.
to the topless wonders :lux:

I had an absolute riot on Thursday and yes, they are the best british band at the moment. Personally I actually think their stuff sounds better live than on the album - they always add something to it. I just hope they don't go mad and split up in the coming months.
