Any suggestions as to who could take over from Smith if he finally F---ks Off.
I unfortunately am struggling to think of a candidate, but anyone would be better than Smith.

What the fock are you talking about. Kinnear? Keegan? You must be mad. After Keegan's performance as Englands boss, I'll be amazed if anyone touches him now. And as for Joe Kinnear, I dont want no former Wimbledon scum in charge of my team. Not sure who we should get, but definately not these two pillocks!

Just a suggestion, but while I was trying to think about who's going to take over for Tuesday night(because there is no way Smith should be there)I came up with Ray Lewington. I know Ron won't like it(who cares about Ron)but as soon as Ray got ill when we were in the Premier we started dropping. The only other I can think of is Kinnear and I'm not too sure about him.Oh well just a thought.

Lewington is excellent, Kinnear too. Palace Eagle - Wimbledon are too Mickey Mouse to even factor into our thoughts.

Roy Hodgson, interesting.
I was listening to the Radio Five phone-in on the coach coming back from Foolham. Some idiot rang in and told Hodgson was Swiss. Mellor said no he is English, but the caller would'nt have it.
Roy Hodgson is from Croydon believe it or not. Quite well documented too.
Wonder if he's an Eagle?

My choice would be Ray Graydon of Walsall.Admittedly his team got relegated last season but he has performed miracles on a shoestring and his teams do play attractive football. He is a disciplinarian who would command the respect of the players.

Surprisingly not a bad call Trolley. But being ex Villa and now Walsall gaffer, I'd be surprised if he would want to leave the Midlands.
As it is, its only a matter of time before John Gregory gets the heave-ho at Villa (he really is a poor coach), I believe Graydon would be front runner for the Villa job.

I would like Super Al to come back as manager. OK, he wasn't the most skillful player we ever had, but at least he was committed to Palace (unlike CERTAIN midfielders I could mention) and how many good players make good managers? He's working wonders at Reading with some excellent signings.
I'll probably get a load of abuse for this but I couldn't give a ****, I think it's our best option.

No one has thought of poaching Jan Molby from Kidderminster???
Top name, top pedigree, respected, but with a small club that he can't take much further.
He knows Houghton and Staunton well, has played and won at the highest levels and is sure to play an attractive passing game.
- notice how many stayed away on Saturday because of failing hoofball.
I hope you read this SJ.

Alex McLeish. He's going to be the new Alex Ferguson in my view.

Alan Shearer or Tilio Lombardo as player managers! or of course, bring back Coppell.
Alex McLeish or Jan Molby, both excellent calls. But I suspect that would take a leap of imagination way beyond the capabilities of anyone at Palace.
I rather hope it is someone completely fresh with no Palace past.
All this pre-supposes that Smith will get the hoof (rather than give it to us).

What about giving Ray Houghton the job. Give him a chance as the big cheese, plus he's done all as a player so I think the players would respect him a lot more. Also, get rid of Cockerill and make Staunton his assistant.

I get the feeling that the CP managers job is becoming increasingly like the England job.
a) all the usual names are being banded around, including names from the past, El Tel and Robson for eng, Coppell and Pardew for CP
b) whoever takes it has to win their first few games or the fans will get on their backs.
c) both positions need experience and someone who will get respect.
d) both sets of fans just want to see decent football.
Barnes,Pearce,Pardew,Houghton etc is a risk, Palace fans are starting to demand instant success and we need a manager with a proven track record.

Agreed for Barnes, Pearce and Houghton, but Pardew has experience and has worked wonders at Reading since Tommy Burns wasted all of their money.
I think that Super Al could potentially be as good as another name from the past, Peter Taylor!

Good idea, get rid of Houghton and Cockerill.
I think Ray Wilkins working with the players is a fantastic idea.

I go along with the call for Jan Molby. He would be well respected by the players through what he acheived with Liverpool, had success in lower league with Kidderminster, and would play a passing game with the ball on the grass. Also agree with the person who stated that nobody at Palace would have the imagination to make this call.

I seem to remember, when Wilkins (re)joined us at the start of 97-98 season, Ray Lewington saying something along the lines of "by his own admission he isn't the greatest coach in the world", and that he was there for his Italian speaking as much as for his coaching.
Maybe Lewington was just watching his back, but that's roughly what he said. Anyway, Wilkins hasn't a great track record ie QPR, Fulham. Maybe he was at Chelsea for his linguistic skills.....

Wilkins as a manager would be a bad idea - he's proven that he can't hack that in the past. However - I think it's the opposite when it comes to him coaching from what I've seen and heard.

Agree about Spackman, he'd be a very good choice.
Wilkins - NO. he has less of a clue tactically than Smith,if that's possible.
yep, lousy manager, but he'd be good to work with the players in training. He's a well respected figure.

After spending an evening trawling the backwaters of European football for a replacement to Alan Smith, I have come up with the following list.
First, in bold, the main contenders.
Secondly, in italics, honourable mentions.
Thirdly, well just don’t even consider the thirdly’s!
Main Contenders
Otto Rehhagel
Available after recently quitting Kaiserslautern. Quit after abuse from the fans. Kaiserslautern just missed out on qualifying for the Champions League in each of the two previous completed seasons. After two wins in the opening six matches this season, the fans were disgusted.
What was more disgusting was their pathetic treatment of the man nicknamed ‘King’ in German football. In 1997 he led Kaiserslautern to the Bundesliga 2 title, followed by the Bundesliga 1 title. This is a unique feat in German football, and he even made Hollywood FC, sorry Bayern Munich, look ordinary on the way.
At the start of the 90’s he worked wonders at Werder Bremen, establishing them as a household name in Europe, after pulling them out of the German second division.
Although 62, Rehhagel is highly respected in European football, and could spend two years stabilising Palace before handing over to a younger man, possibly Stuart Pearce.
Stuart Pearce
Currently playing at West Ham. ‘Psycho’ previously managed Nottingham Forest with great credit, especially as the Trent side club have been in freefall for the past decade.
Would need to be considered as a player manager, Pearce has tremendous amounts of experience, including 78 caps for England.
His main attributes are his passion and will to win.
A gamble, but can Jordan afford not to gamble?
Alex McLeish
Ginger tough tackler made his playing name at Aberdeen under Alex Ferguson. Played 77 times for his native Scotland. Currently enjoying success at Edinburgh side Hibernian. Took over at the Hibbie’s in 1998 just after they had been relegated. Led them straight back up in the first season, and incredibly marched to the top of the Scottish Premier League in his first season. This didn’t last long as the Glasgow giants caught up, especially as Hib’s are an eternal selling side.
This season Hibs are second challenging Celtic and have already beaten Rangers. Amazingly McLeish still keeps building a team which competes even when asked to sell his best players. Earlier this season they were forced to sell top scorer Didier Agathe to Celtic, but McLeish replaced him with David Zitelli.
His strong points are making below average to good ranger player’s play well consistently. His teams are well organised and play pleasing football. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of European football, as shown by astute free transfer signing like Agathe and Zitelli.
McLeish would be my choice for Crystal Palace manager.
Roy Hodgson
Croydon born Roy, didn’t have a distinguished playing career, which was limited to Maidstone United. But he has proved like Arrigo Saachi, Sven Goran Eriksson and Arsene Wenger that this is not necessary to become a top class coach.
Learnt his trade at Malmo in Sweden, Roy has done his best work abroad, including time as national coach of Switzerland. Against all odds Hodgson managed to get the Swiss to qualify for successive World Cups and European Championships. He has since managed Inter in Italy on three different occasions, as well as Blackburn Rovers. Indeed in his first season at Blackburn, Rovers set the Premiership alight with their exciting football. Things turned sour in the second season after a player’s revolt, and his time at Grasshoppers was marred by the fact that the club was heavily in debt.
Is currently resurrecting the fortunes of Denmark’s richest club, FC Copenhagen, and looks likely to make a serious championship challenge.
Like McLeish, his main strengths are getting below average to good range players, playing well and as a unit.
Should be a serious contender for the job.
Honourable Mentions
Ray Graydon
Doing a terrific job at Walsall, his teams are disciplined and pleasing to watch. Has worked on a shoestring to produce excellent results.
Jan Molby
Looking good at Kidderminster after leading them to promotion to the football league last season. Question marks over his spell at Swansea though.
Alan Pardew
Riding high with Reading, his team is breaking all kinds of goal scoring records. Yet to be fully tested in a pressure situation though.
David Moyes
Has proven to be an excellent coach at Preston, yet unlikely to leave North End whilst they ride high in the first division.
Jim Jeffries
Consistently puts together a side that is well-organised and nice to watch. Always asked to sell his top players, Jeffries Hearts are always there or there abouts in Scotland.
Gerry Francis
Proved before at QPR that he can work miracles at the unfashionable clubs. Question marks remain over his passion for the game after the debacles at Spurs and recently cash strapped QPR.
The No No’s
Roy Evans – doesn’t command any respect and is not rated in football.
John Barnes – anyone who saw his Celtic trounced at home to Inverness will know why.
Joe Kinnear – Quite frankly an unfit, boozing joke.
Kevin Keegan – Tactically inept, cries off when things don’t go his way.
Ray Wilkins – proved at Fulham and QPR that he couldn’t manage a p!ss up in a brewery.
Just a little list I put together, are you watching Simon Jordan?
Off, now my arm hurts!

Alan isn't going anywhere, and certainly not this season at least. Jordan has a lot of faith in him. If he were to sack him early it would only reflect badly on his judgement for appointing Smith in the first place.
I haven't read the thread in detail, but I imagine the same old list of usual suspects is being read out, Joe Kinnear, Roy Evans, Kevin Keegan, Margaret Rutherford etc etc...
Accept Alan for what he is. Enjoy his comedy qualities. If you don't you'll end up bursting a blood vessel in frustration.
Thank you.

all have the potential to become top class Premiership players. Maybe Thomson, Sun Jihai and Smith could make the step up too. Give AS the time and money he needs to succeed.
No one should doubt his commitment and I personally believe he might have succeeded with us in the top flight last time if Noades had backed him early on in the transfer market.
We all cringe at some of the stuff AS comes out with, and OK he and anyone else would never displace SIR STEVE from our hearts BUT I have seen a side of potential developing under him and I like the football they are trying to play.

Smithy could do with a bit more support than this guys,we maybe lurking midtable prehaps a final in the cup just around the corner, what more can the guy do, he has done well.I was one of the many calling for his head a while back, but now i think he has earned the right to wear the Palace blazer for at least 1 more season,we should be gratefull that we are stable and heading in the right directon, also why start off with a new manger who would demand proberley twice as much money, and have a perfecty straight set of mince pies.......
