View Full Version : Someone please explain to my wife...

My 6 year old son is currently having football coaching after school. This is being run by none other than Mr 110% himself Phil Barber as a coach employed by Wimbledon's Community Football section. So far, so good. However today he has come home with a Wimbledon "Crazy Gang" polo shirt. I've told him he can't wear it, but my wife (a scouser by the way) thinks I'm being pig-headed. Can other BBSers please explain to her why my position is unnegotiable. She might listen to some other well reasoned arguments.

I have had the same sort of problem with my 4 & 6 year old children. There is no apparent distinction in the female part of the brain between colours and their significance. Tom ended up with a replica of a Man Utd polo shirt, thankfully, it both shrank and faded before I was too embarrassed. Elizabeth has been forbidden a Palace shirt on grounds of unfashionable. Who cares what is fashionable as opposed to what the girl wants to wear; certainly not Laura Trashley glad rags for running around in. I am trying the' sneak up unexpectedly move' ie. Xmas presents!

My mate has a problem similar to this. He is taking his girlfriend (of around 6 months) to a Palace game.
He has asked her to wear the shirt for the match, as she does currently not support a team.
Following heated discussions, she still refuses to, on the grounds that she thinks the shirt looks ugly(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
However, I explained, that it is every sane football supporting man's fantasy http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/eek.gif, for his girlfriend to wear the respecting shirt. She does still refuse to believe it, but it is true, isn't it?!

things could be worse ie man u or liverpool shirts. This will cause a stink but i reckon kids should choose for themselves. As they get older it will certainly bring some spice to the dinner conversations http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/tongue.gif

I can kind of understand this. However, if supporting a club is a family tradition, you don't want it to be f*cked up by some scummy northern shirt! Supporting palace has been a tradition for my family, as my Grandfather supported them since the war, it has been passed on through the generations. If I have kids, they will learn who to support, and "NO" will not be an answer!

I did'nt know adolfdaeagle was still alive or is it a clone? You ca'nt be serious about have to support palace? how can you be a fan if the choice is not freely made? Sure by em a palace shirt to start and the rest will probably follow.

If she is a scouser then their is a 50% chance she follows Liverpool.Just mention the 88 Cup Final that should do it .if she is an Evertonian apply for custody of the kids.

Sometimes a man of a house needs to put his foot down.
Just tell your wife she doesn't understand somethings and explain how much it means to you - (how you've always dreamed of having a son to support Palace with etc. etc.)
Take the kid down to Selhust offer to buy him some kind of Palace merchandise.
It IS important we keep our club in the family - so brainwash your kid!!!! - if you don't sky sports or some Man Utd supporting will!!
I understand your predicament but i say stand strong. Your son will thank you one day.

The only advice I can give is to get them early. Preferably before they are out of nappies.
My son's first game was before he turned one year old.
Never even a sniff of "but dad Arsenal, Utd, MTK win things".
He understands that following Palace has nothing to do with winning.

Just tell the kids that if they want to come to football, then they've got to support Palace as your not going to take them to see another team play. That worked for me. My kids are now 16 and 13 and have supported Palace since they were 3 or 4 years old. I've never had a problem with them wearing the Palace shirts. Even my daughter who is 16, and extremely conscious of what she wears, wears her Palace shirt regularly. She actually wears her Carlo Nash '97 playoff final reserve shirt (white) to bed every night (don't get any ideas you young lads out there!!!).

She's interfering with things outside of her domain. I bet she doesn't get so involved when the car breaks down.
Slap her back into place and put your foot down before you end up living with a child that doesn't seem like your own. I would also damage the shirt before it gets a chance, or better still, give it to charity as they are a charity outfit anyway.
My daughters could recognise a Palace badge and say "Palace" by the age of 2.

Fotunately he seems not to want to wear it. He'd much rather wear his Palace kit. I think his brainwashing has been sufficient to repel any false idols. It's even given him his proudest footballing moment. Last week one of his classmates (all clad in Manure, Chelscum or Scouse shirts) asked Phil what team he supportd and he replied "Crystal Palace, like that boy over there". I think he grew a couple of inches in stature there and then.

I could never allow any child of mine to support another team or wear another team's colours. It's a male thing. Tell your missus to stop meddling with things she just doesn't understand.

Tricky this one - if you have to compromise on another shirt, which I have done, then go for a foreign team, and Barcelona fits the bill nicely as they have red/blue shirts.
The Wimbledon top will have to be 'lost' - can't be that difficult to arrange given the mess in most childrens bedrooms!
My next problem is that my son is being taken on a birthday trip with one of his school pals to Arsenal v Sunderland in a couple of weeks time. This is going to cause big problems on 2 counts;
1 - Obvious (Palace are crap and all his mates support Premier teams)
2 - My wifes family are from N. London and Spurs fans

I think the only sure fire way to get your kids to support Palace is to get them in there early. My little girl is 5 months old and has been to a game already. She has 2 kits and is so brainwashed that she will only stop crying sometimes if I sing her "Walking down the Holmesdale Road". My girlfriend and her family are all Hammers. When I wasn't there the other day they tried to put a West Ham scarf and Hat on her to take a photo....she started crying and was sick on the scarf. Good girl.

Oi! Egg Sample, NO!
There's no argument, stop being so soft by giving tham that easy choice. Stuff Barca, Olympikionos, PSG, Bayern et al and think of Palace. We already lose enough kids to chel**** and friends without losing our own offspring - it's not alright and it's not their choice in life.
Not one Palace fan regrets being a Palace fan anywhere I know, it's a proud and special privelidge - don't be a Gary Lineker, take a leaf out of Daddy Long's book.

That's the spirit. My 3 month old son has already been to a match in the Holmesdale (admittedly he was still in the womb) but since birth he has been to the pub to watch Palace V QPR (he drank milk all match then was sick at the end - just like Dad, except beer instead of milk !)
He has worn his Palace top for the last two saturdays and will again tomorrow. He has no choice, football = Palace. I don't have the same problems as you though as round here everyone is mad about Rugby, so I don't really care which Rugby shirts he gets (even wales) when it comes to football everyone knows where I stand - Palace or nothing.

Getting back to the original posting, the point was regarding a Wimbledon shirt. I would say 'Son, if you want to wear that piece of crap, by all means go ahead, but you can leave my house immediately and never darken my door again'!!
http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif
Seriously though, at least it's Wimbledon, and not Chels**, Man Utd or some other glory hunting team. Tell him that they are crap, he'll be joining about 10 other people if he supports them, and that he is letting himself in for a lot of dissapointment.

There is a ready made solution to get your kids on your side when it comes to supporting Palace but still allowing them to stay 'cool' at school.
One of the best things when you are a kid (still is for Latvian Eagle & Dazza!), is when your dad lets you stay up and watch Match of the Day with him. However now they can see all the Premiership guff on a Sunday afternoon so it isn't as good.....BUT I bet their mates' dads don't let them stay up and watch Nationwide Football Extra after midnight on a Monday night!!
They will become Palace die hards over night as they brag to their mates about watching the boys at one in the morning! Man Utd on a sunday.....not half as cool!
PS Why is the legend that is Phil Barber coaching at Wimbledon and not Palace?

Earlier this season, thanks to the help of my BBS colleagues, I managed to get 8 free tickets for the Burnley game.
My boss is a Hammers fan who lives in Sutton now and he took his 6 year old son along.
Said lad now has a Palace shirt and won't hear of supporting any other team (poor little bugger has been three times and hasn't seen us win yet).
He's going again tomorrow so let's hope we can win for him this time.
So it works both ways people - I'm sure my boss would rather his son supported anyone but Palace but them's the breaks.

I have recently done God's own work and convinced (didn't take much) my 11 year old neighbour to ditch the Manure scum and support Palace. He loves it !!
He's now been to about 10 matches and has loved every bit.
Crystal Palace 1 Manchester United 0.

I think kids generally support the team their dad does (I did), But I also think that the first game is always important. Take him to a game early on, and then not again that season, and he will class it as a treat, then after selected games over three years, buy him a season ticket cos he'll be hooked!!!!

Thank God for a happy ending, you had us going for a minute Simon.
Personally I agree with the method, get them to a game early (before they start school). If that doesn't work put your foot down, refuse to buy any other shirt, never take to another game etc. I'm glad that I brain washed my two lads and everything is fine.My youngest is 5 and just started school. Its the first time that he has even heard of scum blue or red teams and is safely a frequent visitor to the temple that is SP.

Well, I have to confess, I have a crazy gang tee shirt and so do my two sons - freebees from Sam Hamman about 6 years ago - I use mine for gardening.
My boys are big now, and confirmed (5th generation) Palace supporters. Both have been to watch other teams (while away at university, whatever). We all have time for smaller clubs like Brentford or Gillingham (our most local team actually), but all this has nothing to do with supporting Palace.
Actually, the Wombles kits from a few years back were quite neat, but like everything else from that club, have now gone down the drain.
My lads can't hide their contempt at the ManU, 'Pool, Arse wearing masses - its all so naff. Palace is a quirky, unique club which is capable of great things. Today's streewise young blades wouldn't be seen dead in a "High Street Sports Shop" type kit.
Relax !!

not necessarily a male thing kev!! - don't think I'd be too pleased if I ever had kids that wanted to support another team!!!
My ex-girlfriends son wanted to support Chelsea, of course being only five he was corruptable and now has a Palace season ticket. The Chelsea shirt has long since departed for the Red and Blue.
