View Full Version : Brian Deane and Steve Staunton?
Dodger

Latest one for the BBS rumour mill and gossip column. Told to me by my brother who heard from someone apparantly 'in the know' at Palace. Brian Deane and Steve Staunton both to sign for Palace. Probably complete crap made up by someone - anyone heard anything?

As we're up for crappy unsubstatiated rumour, apparently one of Chocky's mates phoned him yesterday to say they saw Smith, Jordan, Jansen and his agent at Selsdon Park on monday. Sounds highly unlikely to me but.......

Dodger, think about their likely wage demands; not worth it even in our improved situation. Also, if they are available, I would have thought there would be at least one or two offers from the Premiership.

Has any other footballer been linked with a another club for so long, as Brian Deane has been with Palace......when with Sheffield, Utd, Leeds, Benfica and 'Borough?
Staunton is a NO for me, but Brian Deane would be a good 1st Division centre-forward/battering ram.
The sad thing is we've never successfully replaced Neil Shipperley. Oh to have a big target man who can win a header, run himself into the ground for 90 minutes and isn't afraid to get stuck in.
eeee lad I remember it like it wor yesterday.
We could never afford either. I know for certain the Deane's contract at Boro entitles him to a fixed percentage of the gates receipts (a so-called "celebrity bonus") and there's no way that we could afford that.

last time Jordan and Smith were spotted at Selsdon Park - Smith took over as manager the next day.. and no-one really believed that until it happened....
stranger things have happened!

Don't start getting our hopes up now Lightweight!
I saw Jansen interviewed on "Nationwide League Extra" on Monday and he seemed pretty damned happy to be playing for Blackburn if you ask me.

I think its all highly unlikely but Staunton played for Ireland alongside Houghton must be financially secure (he got a Bosman back to Liverpool) and maybe given Houllier's plans he's surplus to requirements (but his squad # is 5). A bit strange though to have 2 players discussing personal terms together and without their agents.
Matt Jansen. He didn't want to leave and financially supported CPST. Didn't he make a big fuss of the Palace supporters on Saturday? However, given that Blackburn are favourites to be promoted does he really want to come to Palace?

Matt Jansen ... yes please !!! http://cpfc.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
As for being happy at Blackburn ... I think you'll find that there is public and private side to what Matt thinks about that - and they differ quite a fair bit from the impression that he gives to the Ewood press.
His "dream move" would be to come back to Palace.

Well it's dreams all round then...because surely we can no longer afford his wages, quite apart from what he'd cost in terms of a transfer fee - at current prices, shall we be conservative and say 6 million?

Please forget Jansen, he will not return, no matter how much we want it. With Blackburn he has a real chance of being in the premier league next season, we can't offer that just yet.

Brian Deane gets a "celebrity bonus" ..... that one made me laugh so much.

I'm not so sure Gooders - look at this quote taken from SJ in the news article "Jordans Palace Coup"
Simon Jordan Says...
"Sometimes I wake up in the night and think, ‘sod it – I’ll pay £10m tomorrow and bring a couple of stars in.’ If I decide to flick the switch on I will – we are very revved up to getting this club up. But I won’t buy players for the hell of it and I’m making no rash promises."
So you never know...!

YOU MUST BE JOKING - that has to be the most outrageous thing i have ever heard!! That is just incredible - where did you hear this? Are such things normal? If that's true, player power has now gone too far - that is truly amazing! And Brian Deane - he just isn't that good. Boro must be bloody mad!

We offered the same deal to Ian Wright last year but he chose Burnley instead.
I think that Deadne would be a great signing if its true, they'v just signed Boksic sp he's not a first choice anymore
Neil, yes, another one!
16-08-2000, 03:55 PM
so it's normal these days, for players who are "special" in some way? Chelsea must have to give all their gate receipts to their players then...??!!!

I want the best for Matt Jansen, he deserves to play Premiership and England. What would be great is if Palalce go up and when his contract expires he does a Bosman to us, back to his home.

On perhaps a more worrying note, wasn't Smith a big Leaburn fan when he was here last and tried to buy the 'Charlton goal machine', before being knocked back and getting Stewart on loan. Now Leaburn doesnt get a game foe Wimbledon....
Its a scary thought isnt it

Leaburn - damn scary!
Ok Dodger, so you want to carry on dreaming - fine by me.
I wake up nearly every morning having dreamt that I spent millions on players for Palace, but I'm not going to be rash either.

But if we are to believe it, Alan has changed over the last five years and has learnt from many coaches. It may mean that he no longer rates players like Leaburn, and would prefer the Matt Jansen types.

I think you are perfectly right there. I don't think Chris Coleman enjoyed living up there. If you are twentysomething London does have a certain allure. Matt is very mature but is he mature enough to defer premiership football for a few seasons and then get the big payoff later?

I really think if Jansen did have the chance to rejoin us he would jump at the chance but sorry it's just not going to happen.
Can you see Blackburn selling him after the performance he put in on Saturday and we all know he can play evrn better than that and he has huge potential.
Matt Jansen is the only Blackburn centre forward who isn't on the transfer list at Ewood Park so they simply are not going to sell him.
I always wish Matt the best of luck in his career though.

Just as well the Chelsea players of ten years ago weren't getting paid a percentage of the gate money .... since then luckily (for them) nearly everyone in the home counties has jumped upon Ol' Big Mouth Santa look-a-like's bandwagon.

CPFRIS...
Middlesbrough striker Alun Armstrong yesterday turned down a loan
move to Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old Geordie held talks with
Boro manager Bryan Robson and said:
"I'm not interested in going anywhere on loan."
Instead, Armstrong intends to fight for a first-team place with the
club's six other front men.
"I've seen reports that I'm on the transfer list and I've asked
the boss this morning. He has assured me that's not the case and
he doesn't know where it's come from," he said. "He doesn't want
me to go and I don't want to leave. I'm fit and free of injury
for the first time in two years and I want to win a place in the
side here.
"It's going to be exciting and I want to be part of it. After two
nightmare years I'm just desperate to play."
Armstrong has had three operations for back and achilles problems
after his goals shot Boro to automatic promotion on the final day
three seasons ago.
"I was 23 and scoring goals and suddenly I'm 25 and not playing.
But the pre-season has gone well and now I'm ready to battle for
a place. "Things might change if I don't play. I might consider
going to a good club, depending on the circumstances, but that's
in the future," he added.
Why try for another loan deal????? I read the Smith comment about not having money to spend (which I cant quite understand-he hasnt spent all of it yet). Isnt it the end of the Scandinavian season soon? There must be one or two players over there available on frees

See if Smith can unveil another svensson.
Speaking of Svensson, Charlton have signed loads of strikers this season. Matt may like a move back to SE25 if he hasn't had a game by Christmas.

The trouble is finding someone to buy in the overinflated english market that is good value...

Svensson is unlikely to get a game for charlton any time soon - he's broken his arm.
To answer the original question: yes, that rumour was alive, well and doing the rounds in the Upper Tier on Sunday!
Can't see it meself though.

Sorry to go 'off thread' a bit, but please don't tell me that Brian Deane's agent managed to persuade 'Boro that Deane would substantially increase the attendence.

What's all this about Smith saying he hasn't any money to spend, he only said after the QPR game that he does have money to spend and may be forced into the market due to the injury to Pollock and Jordan has always said if the manager want's to buy a player and it's a good deal then he will fund it.
What i did read though was that Smith will spend the money he has available like his own and do it wisely.

SJ might well wake up thinking he would like to splash out 10m on a star player some days. But, my guess is that's him thinking as a fan. By the time he gets to the office you can bet he's thinking like a businessman again.
In any case, this is Palace not Chelsea - the fans' loyalty does not need to bought in that way. Doesn't mean we don't want/need quality players but it does mean SJ has no need to spend money just for show. That's the kind of thinking that Goldberg had when he got Venables and tried to get Gascoigne - what a pair they would have made!!
