View Full Version : Disk Space Error

I've got this message when trying to load on an existing game:
"Unable to write data to disk. Debug info V3.81. Setup CPP7376. (load_game_data) Unable to unpack temporary files."
It then goes on to list 3 possible reasons - Lack Of Disk Space, File Locked By system, Bad Sectors On Disk Being Written To.
I very much doubt it's lack of disk space. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do, or is this likely to be the end of that particular game?
Is this a common problem?

Have you run ScanDisk yet? (Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools)
That should tell you if you have bad sectors on the HD. If you dont, then its the last remaining reason.. File Locked By System.. which I dont have any idea how to help you with. A complete uninstallation and reinstallation would be worth a try though. (and check for duplicate copies of the program too).

Thanks for your suggestions, Steve. Sadly, Scandisk hasn't made the difference. I assume I will have no option but to lose the game I was in the middle of, and have to start again. Not the end of the world, possibly, as Northampton were plunging towards relegation.
So that I know how to avoid this next time, the last time I played the game "froze". Impatiently, (and being more or less computer illiterate) I just switched off the computer rather than saving and closing down. Could that be why it now says "File locked by system" as one of the options?:o
If so, what should I have done?

Unfortunately Ian, with that last paragraph I think you've answered your own question. All I can advise is patience.
The computer will be slow at certain times of the game especially;
At the very start of the new game of course.
Towards the end of December when it works out all the players who could leave on Bosmans at the end of the current season (which is where I suspect you were at when you switched your PC off, resulting in the crash)
Mid June at the end of a season when it chugs away recalculting the stats for the next season,, including upgrading the players stats and the league tables.
So don't turn off you PC at those times. Also it may go slow at the end of a month or during the transfer deadline of any league that you are running, but I'm not sure, others here might know more though.
Also before you start runnnig the new game, download the latest patch v3.89 from www.sigames.com (http://) & go to "Download" sas it might contain a few less bugs than the 3.81 on the disc.

Yeah I'm terribly sorry Ian, but this does mean it is the end of that particular game :blue: . I know how terribly annoying this can be because it has happened twice before to me, as I had both CM and the internet open and the latter crashed while I was saving my CM game. Oh well, sh!t happens i suppose..

my current game just informs me, after a week or so from where i last saved it, "CM0001.exe has performed an illegal operation in unknown. CM0001.exe will now close." any ideas

Have you been editing the game? That looks like the message I get when I do too many edits, although not quite the same.

Seven seasons is a lot, hope it dont happen to me. :D I have a few edits too.
I wonder if you save two versions of the same game if the first one ****s up will the other copy also **** up too at some point?
I had it happen to me on a 15 season one on CM2 years ago.. terrible.. I never played much more after that.
It wouldnt be so bad if you could actually get in and look at your players, but you never get a chance to say goodbye.... :blue: :blue: :blue: :p

You could download the 3.89 patch from SI. It fixes some bugs, and is compatible with save games. The patch is about 12mb.

I had this problem in a season as Fiorentina kept crashing with that message at a certain date. I asked on the CM Boards and one of the guys suggested that if I had any players who I'd offered trials too (which I had) to take the trial offers away and that seemed to do the trick although a few days later it crashed while saving and now I cant get it to load again :(
I have though downlaoded the GDI patch and havent had any problems since then.

Are you using Windows 2000 then?
I found that it did help to begin with and then after a while the game didn't crash so i just downloaded the normal one and no major problems, the occaisional one but i just restart it and carry on... its not like i have a busy life at the moment. Sleep, home, school - exams, home, sleep....

I have ME too, but this is an old computer. However, in September when i get my new one, Champ will be flying like there's no tomorrow!! It's what keeps me going on the bad days! :)

Thanks for all the helpful replies everyone. Amongst them Ian of Chatham and Daniel Nash both kindly suggested downloading a patch v3.89. Leaving aside the fact that I don't know what a patch is, I tried to do this. However, after about 30 minutes it was still downloading and hadn't seemingly got even a fraction of the way into the download, so I impatiently gave up. Was I doing something wrong in the way I downloaded it, or does it always take this long?
And before someone else says it - yes, I realise this whole thread started as a result of me impatiently switching off the computer because the game was taking too long. :o

Maybe your modem is slow. Could be the reason for the slow download speed.

I get disk space errors ocasionally on 00/01 v3.89, WinME, but I just hit OK and they go away. Doesn't seem to cause any major problem.

I did have the same problem. I downloaded the latest patch and it was fine.
