After just listning to 'unintended' by Muse, I'm in a right sad mood, but whats the most depressing song you've ever heard?

I agree totally, Thom Yorke always looks like he's on the verge of suicide. "No Surprises" how depressing is that song!

Guess it depends what you mean by a depressing song.
The songs I mentioned above are first and foremost great songs that I can find some empathy with when i'm in a sad mood and ready to wallow in some self pity.
That's opposed to songs that are depressingly bad EG Russ Abbott as mentioned as well as anything by:-
T'Pau
Level 42
Thompson Twins
Deacon Blue
'Addicted To Love' - Robert Palmer.

I agree with that. REM's everybody hurts is a brilliant song, and has alot of meaning.

I can't think of any other songs though.

Glad All Over at the end of a match we've just drawn despite outplaying the opposition for 90 minutes does it for me. "No I am not fecking Glad All Over" when that happens.

I think the 'toad has it cracked here. For me, it's not that the songs are depressing (in fact I generally find Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits etc quite upliftingly beutiful) but that when already down, they have a certain special resonance. Who said 'There is a light'? IMHO that song in particular, and the Smiths in general have always been a joyous/comedic experience.

I always find it's the really minimal, often country-influenced stuff that is most conducive to this kind of mood: The Palace Brothers (and all their many derivatives) Slint etc. Nick Drake's always great (Fruit Tree, etc) The Dirty Three, Godspeed YBE, and old, cracked, hissy blues - Robert Johnson is great, if scary!
