Now I don't normally read the Sun, you understand, (someone left it on the train, honest), but they've come up with a figure from somewhere. - they say Coppell's got £6 million to spend. Is this the usual tabloid tosh, or does anyone know if it's based on fact.
I know I shouldn't really post this sort of unsubstantiated rumour, but I'm just so relieved to be able to talk about heresay regarding money we have to spend rather than money we owe http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Jordan said Coppell can have what he needs.
Coppell has said he needs £4m the first year and another £2m each year for the next two years to get back to where we were.
This is more smashing news. It is obvious that we must add to the squad if we are going to be up there challenging again. However we must be sensible, Jordon seems to be. Rather than the reckless approach of the Goldberg era we must be patient. If we let the team forfill it's potentual then we will be a major force in Division one and banging on the Premiership door again.
Also don't forget that Coppell, and it is down to him, has manged to keep the Palace team together through out the administration period. With Morrison, Mullins, Woozley and older players such as Linighan we have the nucleus of a smashing side already here. Jordon has also already said he wants to spend money on developing the youth set-up.
Wolves are the example of a team who have still failed even after having a "Suger Daddy" throwing cash at them. Jordon might not be in the Jack Hayward league financially but seems to have totally the right attitude. We must give the guy time to sort out the mess the clubs in, the clubs been set back by the Goldbrg era but things can get back to how they were.

It makes absolutely no sense to let anybody know how much you've got to spend - otherwise you end up having to pay 7 million for people like Cort and 5 million for Thatcher!
I am not expecting any particularly "high profile" signings and I don't want to see anybody at the club being paid stupid dosh for going through the motions like what happened under Venables.

Coppell's Not stupid. He wont pay over the top prices for players. I strongly believe that Steve will only buy players we need at prices that are reasonable. It'll be great to have top name players at Palace but I'll settle for a stable financial club with Players that are playing well.

We need a left back, a centre back (if Austin goes as Linighan cannot go on for ever), 2 midfield players (one a goalscoring one) and a centre forward in order to have a stronger squad.

Steve will have to spend this money in order to regain a depth of squad, not on one or two big-names like Jansen or Ashley Cole.

Traditionally we always pay too much for "star" players and sell our nuggetts too cheaply. Where we are usually very good is buying players who cost in the £500k to a illion bracket. This is where we should be concentrationg our efforts, although if jordan can get on his mobile to Hill Wood I would love to see Cole lining up next season for us.

We have a midfielder who scores plenty of goals - step forward Hayden Mullins.
We are much more in need of a "creative" one, IMHO.

I'm with Gooders, we really need a creative midfielder, the problem been that there aren't that many around these days.
I feel that we have enough grafters in midfield already and Mullins does score fairly consistently, what we need is someone with a brain who can get things going with a clever pass, rather than just hoofing it up to the front.

Tony Folan would be great buy. He looked outstanding in pre season a couple of years back and we flogged him to Brentford along with Gareth Graham for peanuts

Getting back to the original posting, it was in the Mail as well that Sir Steve had around £6m to spend but whether or not that is true, who knows??

Maybe Palace should look in Italy or France where there are generally more creative players than in England and they always have problems getting into big teams and get stuck in the lower divisions.
We should aim at steady rebuilding, adding to the good and promising players we already have. I was delighted to hear Simon Jordan say he wants to foster the Academy - in my view, some of our best times have been when we have watched a number of young players come through the ranks. While I would be happy for the odd creative player to come from abroad, I hope we do not go back to the days when we brought in a series of expensive foreign signings, and with the exception of Lombardo, they often gave the impression that they were not wholly committed to the club.

I wasnt speaking of expensive signings, but more of loaning youngsters with the option to buy if they are good enough.
Sorry,Marco. I was offering a general thought, rather than responding specifically to your comment. You do indeed make it clear you are not talking about the expensive big names. And while I am in clarification mode, I should perhaps make clear that I recognise that some of our overseas signings have been very committed, and I value them for that - eg I am one of Fan's biggest fans.

what a cock up. think what coppell could have achieved with that kind of backing over a couple of seasons. instead he gave it to alan smith (!) followed by steve bruce, trevour francis and steve kember. even including Dowie i'd say Coppell is still clearly the best manager from those five.

I'd imagine Sir Steve is gonna have a little more than £6m to play with this summer, wonder how he'll handle it.

Think we spent more than £6m that season too but all on has been and foreign imports all with no sell on value. Stupidity of Jordan then. Also he reduced shirt prices and beer prices and rambled on about how he was going to make it as cheap for the fans as possible. Well shirts are expensive again, the box office is still not sorted out, he's run up a fair bit of debt considering he took a club relatively debt free and the beer and matchday experience is still shocking. We're still treated pretty badly and the centenery shirt was £50! So much for "for the fans" etc.
I like Jordan overall, I am just pointing out he's not flawless. Spose this is what being a Palace fan is all about, false dawns...:)
