Very.

Maybe the club does have some ambition then.

Mind you it was a clause in his contract that he was allowed a new contract if he played a certain amount of games.

Just recieved this text from the Palace texting info service. Great news I think as he's the best keeper we've had at the Palace since big Nige.
And even when he makes mistakes he makes sure he makes them for Hungary and saves his top form for us!:p

Almost cerainly a relegation clause in there, ruducing the wages at the very least, probably a minimum fee release upon relgation as well!

Perhaps the club have been judging him on the basis of his performances over the whole season rather than 1 match. It's not like he had much chance with any of the goals on Monday anyway. Following your rationale, we should of recinded AJ's new contract after the Bolton game because he missed some good chances, forgetting the fact he'd scored 15 goals previously?

Given that there is an obvious possibility we will go down - why would he sign this if that was his intention? He didn't have to and it would have been easier to get out of his existing deal than this longer one.

GreatGonzo
18-02-2005, 04:58 PM
Depends on the clauses Beanie!

SJ certainly would have put a wage reduction in there so i guess Kiraly may have signed with a clause saying he can go on a free if we go down!

I just lack your blinding faith in humanity then. I don't feel that an international goalkeeper of his standing that has attracted "reputed" recent interest from Arsenal, has signed a contract with a club in our position that contains absolutely no clauses whatsoever that allow him to be sold at least for a reasonable price should we go down. If you really feel he will happily stay with us even if we go down then you are according him the status of a fan, rather than professional footballer.

I am glad he has signed his extended contract, but having read his
comments after doing so, would advise fans not to get too carried
away yet. It would appear that he has agreed to stay because he
feels confident Palace will stay up - he just doesn't appear to
envisage us being relegated. That is very good to hear but
one has to ask whether he would look at Palace in the same way
if we went down, especially if his wages went down accordingly.
He has admitted difficulty with his English, so what he has been
quoted as saying may not be the whole story. I would be a
lot happier though if he had said he would be staying with us
whereever we finish up at the end of the season........

I think he is ok although people are getting a bit carried away methinks, because he loves the club and is a real character.

Comparisons with past keepers since Nigel are not really meaningful, as none have stayed around too long!

His handling is not as fantastic as it could be, but he does inspire confidence with his commanding presence.

Good to have some positive news at last though.

Actually I'd say I had LESS faith in humanity. Surely from his own self interest it would have been easier (and cheaper for the buying club) if Kiraly had as short a contract as possible if he decides to leave. By extending his contract he at least increases his price on the transfer market which just might make him a less attractive to another club. He could have told SJ he'd sign or not as soon as Palace are safe or not, but in signing now it becomes harder (although clearly not impossible) for him to move on. An escape clause? Either he had one in his original deal in which case refer to above or he didn't, in which case why would Palace (presumably) pay him more and make it easier for him to leave? As far as your last point - many players have done just that, including at Palace. It is not uncommon for players to give one season to try to bounce back unless the club need to sell, which is of course a different discussion. Still, I guess we won't know for sure until 1st September.

I posted this on the HOL earlier:

Don't get me wrong it's good news, but the old cynic in me thinks that this is merely insurance policy by CPFC to enable us to get a decent fee for him at the end of the season.

He is easily in the top five keepers in the prem and I admit to say that I would be very surprised if a top six club didn't come in for him in the summer.

Obviously though this means we will get top dollar for him though, so all well and good.
