Independent today...
The Crystal Palace manager, Alan Smith, is ready to sign goalkeeper Stuart Cockburn from the UniBond League club Altrincham. The highly-rated part-timer has joined Palace for training and is expected to complete a £100,000 deal this week. He has been outstanding for Altrincham over the past couple of seasons despite their relegation from the Conference last term.
He sounds quite good - anyone know much about him ?

I've had a look around myself, seeing as no-one-else is interested http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif
Stuart Coburn Born: 5/5/75
Supporter’s ‘Player of the year’ last season (98-99). Signed from Trafford F.C. in March 1997 after playing a major part in their promotion to the UniBond 1st Division and played a major part in Altrincham’s return to the Conference with 23 clean sheets in all competitions. Previously played for Maine Road and Irlam Town. Currently recovering from surgery to his knee. Not expected to be fit to play until the next Millennium. (bloody hell, he'll be a bit old by then won't he ? http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif)
From another site...
Stuart Coburn
An outstanding goalkeeper and better things are destined for the furture. Stuart, who signed from Trafford, has been a regular in the side and has proved that he is a solid goalkeeper by picking up the ISIS Safe Hands award on a number of occasions.

Although I see a lot of non-league games, I can't say I know him. Surely he's been signed as backup which must mean that either Digby or Gregg, or both's days are now numbered ??

dissappointing that the "well-known Premiership keeper" hasn't materialised. I suspect most of us knew of Taylor but you can't really say he's well known?
however this keeper sounds good, we need a keeper who is more than just a shot stopper. Someone who would have come and caught the cross for the 1st forest goal.

FRAZER DIGBY is shrugging off his injury woes by revealing he wants to play on until he is 40.
But the first target for the former Swindon goalkeeper - out since the start of the season with a shoulder problem - is to win a new contract at Crystal Palace.
Digby, 33, missed the end of last term due to a gashed knee, and his current deal runs out next summer.
But he believes Palace will rise again under their new owner: "The club will go places now that Simon Jordan has come in".
Digby, a former Manchester United youngster, added: "Right now I've got to be patient and wait for my shoulder to repair itself.
"Then I'll be looking to get back as soon as possible.
"I want to be part of the team, as I have been for the past two years.
"If I can keep myself fit, I can see myself playing until the age of 40, like Dave Beasant."

Well I know that Dave - but just because Fraser wants to stay - it doesn't mean the management might want him.
And there have been rumours of him being unhappy as well.

This may be harsh as I've never seen him play but is it wise to sign someone with no league experience? after Day,Gregg and Taylor it appears that being 'rated' for the future doesn't always bode well, I know we all like to play fantasy football but I'd have thought someone like Espen Baardsen would be a better buy.

I'm beggin now! please please please keep Matt Gregg! we saw him at the end of last season and he was very good! maybe he is dodgy on crosses but he can improve! he's still young! we know he has the potential to be one of the best so lets hope Smith keeps him and not Digby. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/frown.gif
4-0 spurs. Only had to stop himself falling asleep... His goal kicks were crap though.

CRYSTAL PALACE manager Alan Smith is poised to sign Altrincham goalkeeper Stuart Cockburn.
Despite Altricham getting relegated from the Conference to the UniBond League last season, Cockburn has been excellent over the last few seasons and has already joined Palace for training.
He is expected to complete a £100,000 move to Selhurst Park later this week.
Meanwhile, the Eagles have had a £2 million bid for striker James Beattie rejected by Southampton.
Saints boss Glenn Hoddle is thought to be holding out for £3 million for the England Under-21 international, who has scored five goals in 57 appearances for the South Coast club.
Palace Chairman Simon Jordan is keen to get a striker in and might consider increasing his offer, after failing in an attempt to get Middlesbrough striker Alun Armstrong on loan.

I s'pose this is one for me, really. I've never watched Alty though I do look for their results. I'll have a look in the local press and report back tomorrow.
Mind you, last time I looked, Dean Greygoose was playing for them after a move from Northwich Vics....
Talking of goalies, i saw Ian Walker playing for a spurs XI last night against Bishops Stortford. He looked well pi~~ed off to even be there, plus there were loads of kids who were spurs fans giving him grief and chanting for sullivan. Other "stars" in attendance were Vega, taricco, etherington (ie-not much cop)...
I wish Jordan would hurry up and buy either walker or (preferably) Myhre..... (if, as seems likely we won't be allowed to buy taylor)

Whatever happened to Simonsen (Steve??). He went to Everton as the MAN. I know being highly rated at a young age doesn't mean anything, but he proved himself in the first division and I'm sure he's desparate for some 1st team action.
