PALACE SIGN HARRISON - BUT BEATTIE DEAL IN BALANCE
**************************************************
HAYTERS
by Joe Hare
Crystal Palace boss Alan Smith has signed Middlesbrough left-back
Craig Harrison for 200,000 - but is refusing to raise his 2.2m
offer for Southampton striker James Beattie.
Harrison, 22, has been on loan at Palace since the start of the
season and has played in every game under Smith.
The Palace boss is also wants to agree a deal for Latvian
international goalkeeper Alexander Koilinko, who cut short a trial
at Palace to represent his country in a World Cup qualifier
against Scotland on Saturday.
But England U-21 striker Beattie will only join Palace if
Southampton boss Glenn Hoddle agrees to accept Smith's original
offer.
Smith said:
"We have made what we consider a very good offer for Beattie, in
excess on 2M but it was refused. The deal is off unless they
change their view.
"Harrison has looked a very good player and we always wanted to
get him permanently. We also like the Latvian 'keeper and he did
well on trial. We will watch him against Scotland and take it
from there."

well, contrary to what many on here think of Harrison, I think he seems decent enough, and for 200k you can't argue really.
Doesn't it make a change to see Palace signing players for bargain prices!!
(sorry, just signing players is enough really!!)
Black, Gray, Pollock, Ruddock all pretty good deals so far I think.

A good signing for 200k. I think he will turn out to be a decent player.

Well, alot of people slated Deano last season and then he became a clut hero and a fan favourite. Austin always claps the fans and gives his all.
In light of this, I think Harrison also deserves the benefit of the doubt. He has been getting better as the games go on and as said before, for £200K, it's a pretty sound buy.

I still think he's cr@p but 200k is about right for a cr@p player with a left foot,
shame his right foot seems to be for standing on only!

For 200k he is good business. Did any of you notice the beautiful cross field pass which set Fanny free only for him to be taken down by Old Man Beasant.

He's a fairly solid player I guess, nothing spectacular. Marginally better than Wayne Carlisle, who I think is the most overated player in the squad.
As long as Smith is saving his pennies for a new striker, 200k for Harrison is ok by me.

swap cross field pass for last ditch clearance upfield whilst being challenged!!!!
as for comparing Harrison to Austin, don't!!

†his is where we need a bit Noades back to do a bit of bartering. A transfer fee, sell on clause, money linked to goals scored in Palace promotions and cup succeses..Wasn't it Gareth Taylor who was bought in a complicated deal like that where the papers quoted a price of around £1.5m but in actual fact it was about £500,000 and the rest linked to future possible achievements?

Cheerleader - please don't compare him to Deano - PLEASE don't say he'll turn out like him. He's one of my most hated players of all time.
Say what you like, I won't change my mind. Anyway, back to Harrison (who I think is ok and will improve)...

Was just trying to make a point of mentioning a player that improved alot over the season.
Perhaps a bad example then.
The point is that I think for that price he is a sound purchase and can only get better with matches.

Agree with you there, Cheery. That cross up to Fan (that led to the incident) on Sunday was perfect. Let's have some more of those please Craig my son.

I'm the 1 who started the thread a while back of what do ya think of Harrison?
I've gotta say that he is young and showed alot of potential when Boro were in Div.1 so for £200k thats a bargain. Still hope we get Konchesky though.
Lets Support him. He's our best current Left Bact/ LWB

Konchesky would have been a better buy, still I suppose Charlton were reluctant to sell him to us, and Harrison will have to do.
At least we can actually sign players now.

Well I'm not unhappy that we've signed him - and it is a good deal at that price.
Hopefully now he's signed, he'll settle in properly pretty quickly and hopefully start to perform even better.
Still not entirely convinced - but we'll see.

Must be good enough at the price. Talking of through balls, it was also Harrison's ball that put Leon clear in the final seconds only for the referee's whistle to prevent Leon making a hero/utter tit of himself.

Looks a great buy at £200,000 ....but what a dodgy hair cut!

Harrison's ball to Fan was the first decent thing he has done. For too long in both the home games he has been happier hiding than getting stuck in. He gets lost in no man's land as was shown by the 3rd Forest goal, which resulted from his error.
I hope that these problems are a result of his injury and that his form will return, but I would have preferred to see more evidence before we bought him. The fee may be small, but what are his wages? Remember that Svensson only cost us £100k

Anyone else think that he looks like that tea-leaf Padavano?
Nice to see though that we're back to looking at clowntons best prospects in order to pinch them.

For a player aged 22 in the current transfer market £200,000 is a great bargain.
I haven't been disappointed with Harrison but haven't been overly impressed.
Craig has held his own, done a decent job on the left which we badly needed and has improved game by game and can only get better.
Also, the more he settles in the better he'll get so signing him for £200,000 was good business, keep it up Jordan.
Welcome aboard Craig.

Apart from a few scant highlights, the only game I've seen Harrison play was against QPR. I thought he was the least spectacular of the new signings, but he looked technically very sound, as a footballer. What seemed to be clearly lacking was confidence and aggression. He seemed overly and unnecessarily tentative. It's not that he never succeeded in beating a single player, going forward, that was the problem -- it's that he never even TRIED to.
I think, given good coaching and encouragement, he could improve dramatically and become a very good player. Whether he'll have the resilience to win over an unconvinced crowd and fulfil his potential is another matter.

Considering Black looked pants against Crawley and everyone now loves him, I think its fair to give a chance to Harrison to improve.

Even if we only paid £200,000 for him, do we really need the sort of palyers that can't even get into the Middlesborough team?
We'd have been better off saving the mponey so we can have more 22 man brawls! It's a bit more entertaining!

He has indeed got a dodgy haircut, but if you've seen the poster in the middle of the last home game's programme you'll appreciate that he needs his hair that long to cover his ears. My word, they are impressive

Maybe we got him so cheap in order for us to pay for enough barbers to cut all his hair off.
If we'd paid £1 million for him then it may be a bad move but what's £200,000 these days?

Mildly interesting piece on Harrison in today's SLP. He admits he's not fully fit yet, and hasn't been happy with his performances for Palace so far. The severity of his recent illness is mentioned again, so perhaps people shouldn't take for granted that he's 'over it' and has got his confidence back. For 200,000 it seems like a win/win situation for Palace anyway.
