Apologies if this has been done before, but what are your favourite cover versions (excluding gormless boy band reworkings and dodgy Eric Clapton reggae)?
Here's a few of mine
1) A New England - Kirsty MacColl
2) Elvis Costello - I'm your Toy
3) Joey Ramone - What a Wonderful World
4) Prince - Betcha By Golly Wow
5) Tom Waits - Somewhere (There's a place for us)
How about you?

Not sure if I have 5 as I'm not too fond of covers but I liked Oasis' version of 'I am the Walrus' from their B Sides album.

Dexys did fantastic covers. I loved Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache. Every Little bit Hurts turns up in both the Jam and the Clash boxed sets. Like the Small Faces doing it meself.

Agreed, their versions of "The Horse" and "Soul Finger" were excellent too. And the Small Faces version of Every Little Bit Hurts is the best, but I thought the Jam version deserved a mention (unlike their version of Move On Up which I thought was pants)

Usually covers are only good when they're very different from the original so I pick -
"Suspicious Minds" by Fine Young Cannibals
Oh yeah and "Glad All Over" by the CPFC 1990 Cup Final Squad. A truly brilliant cover with some excellent production :p

Breaking down the walls of Heartache -Dexys

The Stranglers Walk on By version I think is better than the original, they took a lovey dovey song and gave it bite and menace, great keyboards by the brilliant Dave Greenfield.

Check out Isaac's version but the Stranglers one is pretty good - very Doors-like, though I'd say it was different rather than better than Dionne Warwicks.

Another fine call from Mr 23.
To which I would add the David Bowie and Sonic Youth (so it's sort of a cover) version of 'Afraid of Americans' which is bloomin' brilliant.
Also two from Mr. Mascis - his acoustic version of Bowie's 'Quicksand' and the Dinosaur Jr version of the Cure's 'Just Like Heaven'.
And given that there's a musical chain type thing going on here - Sebadoh's version of 'Everybody's been burned' is great.
And continuing the chain with my fifth - the Byrd's cover of Dylan's 'Lay Lady Lay'.
Hey that was good - David Bowie to the Byrds in four steps. Do I win a prize?

Three more just popped into my head:
Labelle's version of Van's 'Moonshadow' is a masterpiece - and I don't use that phrase lightly.

The Clash's version of Police and Thieves

Also play Motorhead by Primal Scream quite a bit in the car but whether better than the original ??
Agree with comments about great covers from Dexys -
7 Days to long, Breaking Down The Walls of Heartache, even Jackie Wilson says.

I love so many of the songs mentioned already, so to avoid repetition (I hope) I'll pick different ones:
1. Bluetones - 'Sail On Sailor'
2. Travis - 'Be My Baby'
3. Beatles - 'Roll Over Beethoven'
4. Gladys Night & the Pips - 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine'
5. Shirley Bassey - 'Light My Fire'
This is pretty arbitrary - if you ask me tomorrow I'll probably come up with a different five.

Me too. :p just showing off...
Anyway, I hate it when bands/singers just do a repeat of an original song - that makes me sooooo mad. :grrr:
This thread proves there's nothing wrong with doing a cover version - as long as you pick a good song and bring something of your own to it. The Stanglers Walk on By being a brilliant example. In fact, I'd probably put it my top 10 all time favourite songs of all time.
And as someone mentioned Aha earlier - when A1 did their version recently my 14year old was going on about how good it was. So I told her I prefered the original version - and she had no idea it was a cover! I couldn't beleive it, but then I've only just discovered from this thread that Handbags and Gladrags is a Rod Stewart cover (although I did think it sounded a little familiar) - and I thought I knew about music... :(

No, but it was a hit first. Marvin Gaye did it as an album track on In The Groove but didn't really rate it. Then Glad got her hands on it in a deliberate attempt to sound like Aretha Franklin, who was just then getting big. Following on from that, some enterprising D.J. picked up Marvin's version, and then Motown released it as a single. They also repackaged the album as I Heard It Through the Grapevine. I know this, having bought them both at the same time from the internet!! Luckily I could get a refund on one of them.
Anyway, today's top 5 are:
1. Aretha Franklin - 'Don't Play That Song (You Lied)'
2. Otis Redding - 'A Change is Gonna Come' (even if he did cop out of the controversial verse)
3. Rolling Stones - 'You Better Move On'
4. Rod Stewart - 'I'd Rather Go Blind'
5. Moody Blues - 'Go Now'

Handbags and Gladrags was originally recorded by Chris Farlowe but actually written by Mike D'Abo of Manfredd Mann and he still performs it at their concerts. I believe it is the D'Abo version that plays out at the end of Ricky Gervais's The Office.
Some good calls on here, just a few to add:
1) You Keep Me Hanging On - Vanilla Fudge
Incredible cover. I love the Supremes version but they make it into a completely different, brilliant song. Check it out if you ever get the chance, also features the best drumming I have ever heard.
2) Mr Tambourine Man - The Byrds
Surprised no-one has mentioned this already. A classic.
3) Twist and Shout - The Beatles
Incredible singing from Lennon.
4) It Must Be Love - Madness
5) Hit Me Baby One More Time - Travis

Blimey, didn't know that! The trouble (only for the purposes of this thread) with Motown, and soul generally, is that so many versions were made of so many songs that it's difficult to know whose was first. I've got 4 versions of 'A Woman, A Lover, A Friend' I can think of, and I don't expect that would be exhaustive!

I'm pretty sure I've got a William Bell version, i've definitely got it by Booker T. & the M.G.s (though obviouslyan instrumental).
The Flying Burrito Brothers' version of 'Wild Horses' is tons better than the original if you ask me. Incidentally, that's another one that was released before its progenitor. The Stones were in the studio recording an album, and had a slide guitar session player in. They recorded Wild Horses, but didn't feel it fit with the other material, so decided to hold it back for their next album. In the meantime, the slide player returned to his regular gig with the Burritos and taught them this fantastic song he'd been taught by Keith Richards. Their version was out within weeks!

I'm going to bump this up in response to the recently revived Worst Cover Versions thread! There are some truly great songs, covered well by some great bands:
Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head - Manic Street Preachers (in fact I rate most of their covers from Take The Skinheads Bowling, M*A*S*H*, to It's So Easy)
Wuthering Heights - China Drum
Suspicious Minds - Fine Young Cannibals
and finally to completely destroy my credibility I prefer this to the original:
Father and Son - Boyzone :D

Red Hot Chili Peppers' version of Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground' is fantastic.
I've also got a few good tribute albums which are bulging with top cover versions. 'I'm Your Fan', a tribute to Leonard Cohen, is a particularly fine example. So is 'Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye', a tribute to Roky Erickson of 13th Floor Elevators.

Ok, forget Will Young, Gareth Gates and any other weedy copyists. What I'm after is your opinion of what are the greatest cover versions; y'know, stuff like Aretha Franklin's Respect or maybe Sid Vicious' My Way.

Can't Explain and Purple Haze also worthy of mention.
Anything by that Nouvelle Vague lot.... though especially, In a manner of speaking, who did that originally anyway?

Mentioned many times but Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower is something else.
Also like Creedance Clearwaters Revival extended version of Heard It Through The Grapevine.

Husker Du - Eight Miles High. Knocks the original to the floor then drags it away by its hair.
And as for the video of Johnny Cash, 'Hurt' ... if you don't start crying like a baby watching that, you just haven't got a soul.

Which cover songs, in your opinion, are better than the originals?
Comfotably Numb is better by the Scissor Sisters and Under the Bridge is better by All Saints.

:sob: noooo
I have just been listening to a cover version of Amazing Grace by Carlos santana which really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Not better than the original but great anyway.
Norah jones - crazy
Sixpence none the richer - Dont dream its over
Snow Patrol - Teenage kicks (Nothing can ever beat that original but still a fine version)

Pretty sure there is a long thread about this somewhere (it brought to my attention the ian brown versions of 'Thriller' and 'Billie Jean').
My vote goes to Oasis' version of 'My Generation'
Ash also do a quality live version of 'The boys are back in town'

Wasn't a cover version. Sinead O'Connor was the first performer of this song.
Prince wrote the song for Sinead O'Connor and later sang it himself.

Well I bow to your superior knowledge. I have had Prince on all day today and the worst song I heard was Nothing Compares. Sinead's wasn't that good to be honest.
Am I allowed to go for 'David Watts' by the Jam then?

I'm A Believer - The Monkees (original by Neil Diamond ... or did he just write it so their version was the 1st to be released?)
Mighty Quinn - Manfred Mann
I prefer Stereophonics 'Handbags & Gladrags' to Rod Stewart's version
Considering few people remebered the original then Toploader's 'Dancing in the Moonlight' could qualify
Not saying it's better but I really like Jose Feliciano's 'Light My Fire' - very difefrent to Doors' original which I think, assuming different is also good, is what a cover should aspire to.
