When a team gets a free kick just outside the oppositions box normally there would be excited anticipation but with Palace we know it will be a tame shot at the wall or a blast over the bar.
Got me thinking, when did we last have anyone who could strike a decent free kick? Last one was probably Peter Taylor.

Granville can, but wasn't given much chance this season

I think set-pieces is certainly an issue or even a coaching technique that Sir Dowie has yet to develop properly, defensivly and offensivly.

Danny hit the bar at Portsmouth with a good effort and after that do not remember him taking another free kick in a decent attacking area

Lombardo was last decent free-kick taker I remember.

Defending we can have our moments when we all push out and leave 4 attackers in the middle of our box offside, however attacking is awful. Like has been said Danny is about the best on offer and that is certainly nothing special.

Danny is currently the best one at the club as said. Was a shame when his one at Pompey dint go in!

Granville can definitely take a good free kick. The worst ones we do are when Hughesy does the little tap to AJ, they almost always get charged down.

Although just remembered the one rolled across the box to Butters who then stuck a boot behind it, that was nice.

We definately need to sort this out. The number of goals we don't score from corners and free kicks is criminal. Worse than that we also can concede goals when a poor corner or free kick breaks down. I too would love a player who we thought had an even chance of scoring when we stood over the free kick.

Am I right in thinking the last clean free kick we scored from was away to Millwall

Think so. That was Bens' wasn't it?

Bizarre, isn't it.

The last player I remember us having who could thunder one in regularly was Dean Gordon.

If Butts is playing it is usually pretty dangerous to the oppo to lay it off for him to smash one in, ie. Sunderland.

To be fair though that was a complete freak of a goal, the look on Mart Poom's face when it deflected past him :D

Yeah but it caused a fook load of problems for their defence and that is why it did deflect in! ;)

Besides it was not the first time he hammered in a similar kick and caused a heck of a lot of trouble!

Let's face it - our free kicks frightened no-one and don't get me started on our corners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Benny Watson can take em. Nice effort vs Charlton. Up and over the wall, and then on target is what you want to see.

if theres one thing aj cant do (apart from grow hair) its take free kicks. i realised what a one man team we had become when he started taking our free kicks. butts can pack a pretty awesome free kick - i think he showed us all that in the play off first leg ;)

seriously though last season he had a few decent efforts. it got a bit predictable though! the last time i was really confident with a free kick taker was when matt jansen stood over the ball towards the end of 97/98. he always looked like scoring but never quite did.

Dont remember that. The one against Pompey hit the top of bar and post.
