View Full Version : Daniele Dichio To Sign ?
According to the Observer, we have bid 1m for Danny Dichio of Sunderland. He's tall, but I don't know what his recent form has been like.

Dichio was a verybright prospect but can't say I know much about him recently... but can't be worse than what we have at the moment.

Oh my God NOOOOOO !
My girlfriend's a Sunderland supporter and, having seen him play a couple of times and knowing we were looking for a big target man we've made several jokes that we could bid for him.
But I never for a moment thought we bloody would !
From what I've seen of him in the Premiership he's pretty much complete toilet. However, I suppose we just have to hope that in the First Division he'll fair better...
I have to say, judging on how he's been received in Sunderland and how often he's been picked (ie. not much) the offer is very likely to be accepted.

Crystal Palace boss Alan Smith is reported to have made an enquiry about Sunderland striker Danny Dichio.
The former QPR and Sampdoria frontman has struggled to challenge for a regular first-team spot since making the move to the Stadium of Light, with Niall Quinn's good form a barrier to his aspirations of regular top flight football.
Although Dichio has only recently signed a new deal with the Black Cats, it is reported that boss Peter Reid is willing to let the striker leave if he receives an offer of around £2 million.
However, Palace boss Smith, with a £4 million transfer kitty at his disposal, is hoping to agree a fee nearer the £1 million mark.
Negotiations are set to continue between the two clubs, with several other sides monitoring developments.
Meanwhile, Sunday newspapers have suggested that former Palace boss Steve Coppell is set for a quick return to management with Oxford United, replacing Denis Smith who resigned last week.

I think Dichio is exactly the sort of player we need and the price seems reasonable.
Knowing Palace we will end up paying 2 million, not 1.

reading the observer 2day, i noticed that we have made a £1m bid for sunderland's Daniel Dichio. He's 6"5 or something like that, so smith's big long hoof tactics might actually work(fat chance of that).
if u don't remember him, he was that QPR reject from 4 years ago.
also, it says kitson is off 2 forest after platt offered £1m for him.

Di Chio - even looked crap at QPR. If I remember Sunderland only got him cos he was on Bosman in the hope they could sell him for a profit. Had no takers, but wait here come the mugs - Palace, even they'll take him.
No thanks.

Dichio is surprisingly good with the ball for a big man and obviously can head a ball. He is one of those players who has a habit of scoring important goals and I would welcome him to Selhurst with open arms. So he didn't make it at Sampdoria...big deal....how many of our current players would?

So Dichio was crap at QPR was he? 20 league goals in 56 starts. Not bad if you ask me.
Unfortunately he has not been able to break the Phillips Quinn partnership at Sunderland but when Phillips was last out injured (1st half of 1998/1999 season) Dichio ended the season with 12 goals. Not bad if you ask me again.
Good signing if we can get him. 24 years old and good record. END OF.

I haven't seen the guy apart from the odd TV moment but I like to know what the real problem is. I always thought a scoring ratio of 1:3 was reckoned to be pretty good - so what is so bad about 20:56 at QPR? He got about half a season when Phillips was injured - so that's about 12:30 (given a few other games) what's the problem there? He can't break the Quinn/Phillips partnership - if he could we certainly couldn't afford him. What is there against him exactly? Apart from the fact that he didn't shine at Sampdoria. If he continues to score at the above rate he'll get 18 - 20 a season. I'd settle for that for £1m!

Go for him, sorry guys I think he'doffer us something good and different that what we already have, he'd not be my 1st choice but I think we need a BIG TALL AERIAL THREAT and a POWERFUL STRIKER UPFRONT to offer us something different, its also a player that is very useful in division 1 (BUT I DONT SUGGEST LONG BALL)
I'd prefer Horsfield or someone else
Still wouldnt take either if they demanded too much as for starters they wouldnt be guarenteed starters.
We only need to buy one forward this summer and ket the youngsters push through

God, not Dichio, or Horsfield. We don't want another Taylor/Fuller/Bradbury style player. Please can we try and get someone who can play football on the deck and open up defences, like Forrsell could do. We'll never get someone as good as him again. We need someone who can lead the line (Morrison is ok at this, but not great) but that doens't mean we need a big donkey.

Everyone give Danny Dichio a break even though he aint signed yet. If he does join i personally think he will bolster our front line and can link up with clinton and dougie plus with someone like kirovsky on the bench.
Dichio has always came accross me as a pretty strong player which we could do with against defences his scoring recors with sunderland is it played sommot like 21 scored 11 aint bad and for 1m aint bad i think this is a signing bruce cannot turn down.
PLUS i was talkin to me bro hes a derby fan and he says when dichios played against them he has been decent and me bro rates him and says he would be good at palace in division 1

Dichio's career stats are:
86 league starts plus 74 substitute appearances. Total goals: 33.
He has scored 11 in 21 starts for Sunderland. But he also has 55 sub appearances for Sunderland which makes it 11 in 76 games..
I too was thinking he cant be that bad. Gone abroad, England U21s, useful header and so on.. but those stats are not good for a striker.

My impression of Mr Dichio is that he has a nice first touch and has the ability to lay the ball off in order to bring other players into the game.
He is good in the air and likes to attack the ball at the far post.
He possesses a shot like a mule and is adroit at taking free kicks around a wall.
On the downside he appears to lack a bit of pace and indeed seems slightly one paced.

so
dichio 1m
kirovsky 500k
edworhty 2m-2.5m well worht it if you ask me
and dezeeuw 1.5 m

I genuinely think Dichio is a better player than people give him credit for.
I'm sure he would do well in the first division. A lot of people remember him as the player got "that move" to Sampodoria.
Perhaps not a world beater but we a reasonable addition to the squad. I’m sure Freedman would excel off him.
Give the guy a chance. What sort of confidence does it show him if we're writing him off before he's even put on a Palace shirt (that is if he signs!!) :)

Levski I actually quite rated Bradbury and without trying to turn into a GREATGONZO (nice bloke but always likes to say things that people will disagree with dont know why) I have been told that Fuller is a prospect who simply isn't ready and is expected to be a late developed player (get better at a later age like 23 as many have done before)
Ok Levski I know that its not particularly worth mentioning coz he's gone Wimbledon but wouldn;t Shipperley have been nice? Can play on deck ,great flick ons for Clint and Doug to thrive on, has aerial threat and leads line. Ok he'll never be good enough for the Prem but a good div 1 player and as much as I am not in favour of all these old players returning I like Shipps

Just for the record and just in case we do sign him, I shall state here in black and white that I think he could do a good job for us.
I know I might come to regret it but my honest hunch is that I would like him at Palace.
Everytime I've seen him he's looked poor, the only chance however is that I thought signing Paul Stewart was a ridiculous move by Smith in 93 and look what happened then! I would be happy to be proved wrong, or for him to buy someone else!
Whilst I don't think he would do as badly as some are suggesting and is surely a better player than Taylor I feel it would be a mediocre signing.
Dichio and for that matter Campbell would both cost in excess of 1 million yet they have lamentable strike rates. It seems that any reserve team player in the Premiership will be worth loads just because of the hype of the Premier. Dichio has failed to make an impact at Sunderland and is not talked about as a sucessor to Quinn and Campbell made little impact at stuggling Boro last season and on loan at Bolton.
Why don't we go and look for affordable quality players in somewhere like Scandanavia..?

DICHIO LATEST PALACE TARGET
Crystal Palace's search for a striker goes on after the collapse of Andy Campbell's move from Middlesbrough on medical grounds - with Daniele Dichio the latest player to be linked to a £1m move. Dichio finds himself surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light after the arrivals of Lilian Laslandes and David Bellion and The Express say that Palace are preparing a £1m bid for the former Queens Park Rangers man.

Just saw this on a Sunderland Website:
Palace have been linked with a move for Sunderland striker Danny Dichio after The Black Cats rejected a £750,000 offer from West Brom.
Dichio was keen on turning his loan spell at The Hawthorns into a permanent move after battling back from a broken foot sustained shortly after his move to the Midlands. And the player was said to be "devastated" by Sunderland boss Peter Reid's decision to turn down what he saw as a fair offer from The Baggies, but has made it clear that first-team football is his number one priority. That could open the door for Steve Bruce to make a move for the former Sampdoria hitman, and should the Eagles boss come in with an offer nearer the £1million mark, Dichio could be added to Palace's already formidable strikeforce.

He'd been training at West Brom for a while and even after got injured he stayed in the midlands and did his recuperating there. Apparently he was dead keen on a move there, and though he only a few games he was quite popular with the fans. So, I'm a bit surprised Sunderland haven't sold him, I think he's an OKAY player and £750,000 seems quite reasonable.
If Palace are after him as cover for Freedman/Morrison he's probably not the worse they could do but £1m max I reckon.

We've been linked to this bloke for just over a year according to this very thread.
I don't think much of Dichio, but we do need cover up front.

Whilst I agree we need cover, we don't need it NOW, straight away. I think it's obvious Bruce is waiting for Campbell, and has quite sensibly not spent on a player he doesn't really want, at a time we don't desparately need him. So if we get Campbell, and if neither Doug nor Clint is crocked in the next couple of weeks, by which time he is supposed to be fit, do we need Dichio as well? Are Dichio and Campbell different enough to warrent having them both? Also, if Dichio is so keen on first team football - can we supply it?

sky sports are linking us with Dichio again
West Brom have failed in their bid and we are meant to be favourites to sign him.
Is this a good thing?

Here's that Sky Sports article - and mention of Barton as well ....
Sunderland striker Danny Dichio's proposed move to West Brom is off after the two clubs failed to agree on a fee, according to the player's agent.
Baggies boss Gary Megson made a £750,000 bid for the former QPR and Sampdoria hitman and were willing to offer a further £250,000 payment based on appearances, but the Black Cats rejected the bid.
And the Baggies could now lose out on Dichio altogether as First Division rivals Crystal Palace are believed to be lining up a bid for the beanpole striker.
Dichio's agent Ian Anderson said: "The deal is definitely off as the two clubs are just not able to agree on a fee.
"Danny desperately wanted to go to West Brom and Gary Megson was very keen, but it is now just not going to happen as Sunderland are not prepared to budge and, unfortunately, West Brom will not up their offer - so there is a stalemate.
"It is a shame because when you put the fee into perspective it is not a lot of money for a player of Danny's type - a big striker, good in the air and one who has scored goals in the Premiership."
Black Cats boss Peter Reid is holding out for £1million and Anderson revealed that Dichio could yet return to London with Steve Bruce's high-flying Eagles.
"I know Palace have been mentioned, but I have had no approach from any other club at the moment," said Anderson. "Danny wants to go to an ambitious club and one who has serious promotion credentials.
"He would not be prepared to drop down the leagues, but he is hoping to seal a move further south because his wife and kids are now down there. He is fit now and training at Sunderland, so I am expecting there to be some interest later in the week."
Meanwhile, Bruce has insisted he has no interest in signing unsettled Newcastle United defender Warren Barton.
"I'm definitely not interested in Warren Barton," he said. "And if I was, I would have the decency to ring Bobby Robson and tell him so, rather than do my business through the newspapers."

Murmurings amoungst the WBA fans' community indicate that we'll be signing Danny Dichio this week.
Is he out of contract? Can't believe we'd be interested unless he was.

He'll be a good partner for John Dreyer who we're also signing! What with Dion Dublin up front we'll do all right year.

Can I just point out that at no point did the guy with the info say we are going to spend £1m on him. Check the date of the posts if you are reading too far back.
We get rid of Akinbiyi and Dichio replaces him. I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry. :sob:

Brian Deane is almost certain to become a Palace player in the next week. As is Sizwe Motuang.

You must be mad. I can think of better ways to spend that money:
Neil Shipperley
Rob Hulse
Alan Lee
Richard Langley
Clarke Carlisle
Scott Murray
We could buy maybe two or three of those players for £1m!

£1M for Dichio? Surely it'd be better spent on a creative midfielder or central defender? ;)

I'm sure he would form a good partnership with Chris Whyte. Is he still at West Brom? Perhaps a double signing with Dichio. But not for a million though

Omen, I knew I should have started a new thread on this!!
Anyway, I've done my homework and Dichio's contract expires next year (June 2004), so a fee would be due. But if you check out the link below, it seems that Megson might be less than impressed with Dichio's domestic arrangement, and may be loooking to offload.

I do agree with you about the £1m bids, but there is a point. SJ said he would be putting £9m in this year, but he did NOT say that this was just to pay the day to day expenses. It's possible that the £9m could include, say, £1m or 2m to spend on players. In fact he did say that there WAS some money for players - but that we need to keep the wages down.
