Are teams like Bilbao, Osasuna, Alaves, Real Sociedad only allowed to sign Spanish players if they are Basque?

In my CM game all of Bilbao's squad are Spanish/Basque. The majority of Alaves, Sociedad and Osasuna's squad are Spanish/Basque, but they do have just Spanish players.

Bilbao are only allowed to buy players who are Basque, whether Spanish or French.

Sociedad are only allowed to buy Basque or foreign players, and no Spaniards.

I dont think the other teams suffer from this.

Is it because they wish to Basque in their own glory:)

The Basque teams are only allowed to sign players who are foreign or have Basque decendancy......... This significantly harms their chances of doing well because they are being too selective........ however Real Madrid have no such worries :D

I'm going with Real Madrid, for the pure fact they are my fave Spanish team and they won the league so convincingly last season

Another point; how come there are "Spanish/Basque" players, but no "Spanish/Catalan" players?

Doesnt mean sh!t when you are wrong Latvian.

Bilbao are allowed to sign Basque players, and Basque players only. No foreigners whatsoever.

Why is that though? is it a pride thing? or a rule? or a tradition?

In Bilbao's case, its tradition AND pride. The ETA also have a lot to do with it. The ETA being a Basque IRA.

It is a seperatist thing and very anti-Spanish.

What foxes me somewhat is the fact that although non-Basque players are banned, coaches are'nt. For example, the German, Jupp Heynckes and the Frenchman Luis Fernandez have both previously coached Bilbao.

There was also much indigestion when Bilbao signed Bixente Lizarazu from Bordeaux in the late nineties. He is French-Basque and this led to much indignation with many Bilbao followers who wanted the tradition to mean Spanish-Basque, which perversely stinks of hypocrisy!

When it is instructed in the Club statute that the club shall not sign non-Basque, surely that constitutes the same as "not being allowed to..."?

Lizarazu was 1996/7, but he only played 16 games before moving on.

So, Latvian... if he is wrong. Then why is he wrong?

ETA keep threatening Lizarazu to, basically and cynically, pay for their bombing campaigns by paying some sort of tax. He refuses and they say they will get him when he returns to the Basque land.. he says fine, i will stay in Munich! HAH!

We talked about that in History on thursday! hehe.

Didnt he receive death-threats which were so serious he asked for a transfer away from Spain?

You pretty much answered my question before I finished asking it Dan :hmph: Maybe what Latvian means is there's no regulation against it, except that self-imposed on the club.

Because it came up on Spanish Soccer on Sky Sports once this season and they said they're allowed but choose not to because of tradition as i have already said, of course the club can if they wish, however they choose not to obviously because of the troubles which could be caused

Youre basing that on Sky Sports rather than someone who has researched the point?
