View Full Version : Whip round for Phelan

I would happily donate a fiver for the purchase of Terry Phelan after the abyssmal display by Craig Harrison today.
I am not one to critisise players normally but his performance today was beyond poor.
Im not knocking his commitment, sadly its the players ability that is in question.
His passing is woefull, hes too lightweight in the tackle, freekicks were punted into knowhere land, ability to control the ball leaves alot to be desired and was continually skinned down the line....Alan Smith i am afraid has wasted alot of Simons money on him. VERDICT: put him in the reserves and toughen him up a bit..!!

Its not often I shout at the tv about one player, but harrison's distribution is woeful. And why let him take free kicks? A couple of passes in the second hald went straight to WBA players and not a Palave player within 10 yards! Aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

But seriously, would we buy another left back now that we have already signed one?

Harrison was a weak link - again.
We should have kept him on loan longer if you ask me, now we'll have to go and buy another left-back.

perhaps he should just get a decent haircut?
I really want to give him a chance but watching today my patience is running very thin. He always looks like he's running through treacle and his ball control is wanting.

Sadly I agree. He looks slow and lacking. Whats worrying is we had him on trial long enough and should never have bought him.
Lets offer him back to Middlesborough for nothing and throw McKenzie in as an added inducement.Least we save a wages bill or two.

Thought Harrison had his best 45 minutes in the second half against Forest and I was hoping he was finding his feet but he was very poor this afternoon.Don't think Phelan is the answer, not at £750,000 and £4,500 per weeek.

What I fail to understand is how Harrison gets into the side ahead of Austin. Dean with one leg tied behind his back is better than the Padavano lookalike. Come on Smith, play Austin and get two decent strikers in. And do it quickly.

I feel exactly the same. I like to give everyone a fair chance but his performance was far worse than any other player from an all round poor Palace performance. I was screaming at the TV at him all the time unfortunately. I thought Ruddock was cr@p too, apart from his couple of headers.
He wouldn't make the CPIFC team.
I am sorry but...
Harrison is much better than Deano.
I love Deano dearly but Craig is much much better. I would love to hear a Deano comment without the phrases'tries hard-heart in the right place-etc etc-'

No way Dave, Deano when confident is better - more committed, better passer, better header and better tackler. Maybe and hopefully Mr Harrison will shape up and proove us all wrong.

I'd love to see Harrison turn it around but you have to say he does not deserve a place in the side given his dire performances so far...

I think he will become a good player but at the moment he shouldn't be playing. He hadn't been playing 1st team football at Boro and lacks fitness. He needs time to get fully fit so that he can play as a wing back if that is the formation Smith is going to play.

I think you're looking for a scapegoat.
Harrison was by no means the worst Palace player on the pitch today.

The wages look ok but there's no way we should be paying a fee like that - not when Fulham got him for nothing.
I'd love to see him back but let's not allow Al Fayed to stitch us up please.

Oi! Alan Russell. When does your application for the job of England coach go in then? http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif
Harrison was woeful. Some of his passes were 10 yards off the mark. If you think someone played worse, name names - I'd be interested to hear your view.

Er, Mr Russell, yes he was the worst. Closely followed by Leon. Outnumbered methinks.
He was so bad, that he was behind both goalies in the pecking order for Player-cam !

I know he's still got a lt to learn, but there is no doubting his commitment and desire (he is palace through and through)
what about Framton??? Isn't it time he had a proper chance? He must do better than Harrison

You might have thought that from the TV but he defintely wasn't from watching all that went on.
Mullins was worse and McKenzie next as I said to you earlier Al.

watching at the game - Harrison was by far the worst - I can't think of much that he did right.. misplaced passes, free kicks were atrocious - he wasn't in it at all - on a couple of occassions he was probably the best placed player on the pitch - but no-one passed to him - I wonder if they did that deliberately. He didn't even look like he had a clue positionally with or without the ball. I don't like criticising players - but he really had a 'mare - vast improvement needed before he lives up to Smithys billing.
Mullins wasn't good - but improved dramatically once he moved into midfield
Black and Taylor and maybe Pollock were the only ones really worthy of any praise.

oh - and Terry Phelan - if we can get him - let's do it.. the team noticeably improved last season when we had a decent left back - i.e. Cole & Phelan..

But not for 750k. We can get younger players who are as good for that price.
It's interesting that so many of you have
now instantly changed your minds about Harrison from comments you've made before - Mullins was definitely the worst on the pitch, check out the video.

err - I thought this discussion was about how Harrison played yesterday - not what we thought of him short or long term... personally I've been all for giving him a chance - improvements in games have borne that out - until yesterday - signing a contract with us seems to have been the worst thing he could have done. Hopefully he'll play a blinder tomorrow night and we'll all forgive him.. I'll be happy for him to show us what he can do and prove the doubters wrong

Posted by Alan on Harrison thread not long ago:-
"Still remain unconvinced by Harrison - he doesn't do anything at all that catches the eye.
Not sure yet if he's worth buying or is any better than what we already have - he doesn't appear to be getting any better either, just pretty much always the same match to match"

I'm with Alan on this one. Harrison had a stinker on Sunday but many are looking for a scapegoat after 6 points dropped against Forest and WBA.
He is a microcosm of the Palace team. In Blackburn, QPR and Forest games, he was weak and uncertain for first 45 minutes and looked promising in second 45 minutes.... rather like most of the team.
Perhaps he does need a few games in the stiffs but this abuse does no one any good.
See also list of other players below who were poor for the majority of the 90 mins on Sunday:
Ruddock
Mullins
Rodger
Morrison
Gray
McKenzie
The others weren't much better. Yes, even King Tommy - he huffed and puffed and tried for 90 minutes but did he put a decent cross in?

don't think it's a case of looking for a scapegoat - most of the team played badly - but Harrison had a really poor game - I'm sure if he watched the video he'd see it for himself.

Where did I abuse Harrison? I just made some fairly simple observations - he was reluctant to tackle, his passing was woeful and his free kick taking very unimpressive. That's factual, not abusive. I pray he improves, I really do, but we can't just say he's coming back from the appendix thing. If he's not ready he shouldnt play in the first team. If he is then he should be showing a bit more than he has so far. or maybe a lot of us are just cr*p judges of footballers in general.

Sorry Al - my posting and reference to "abuse" was a response to the various threads which have touched on Harrison's performances so far. Your observations are fair and I do not disagree with them.
I am just a bit disappointed that the team's poor displays (mainly first halves) have resulted in what IMHO has been excessive criticism of one individual.
Harrison needs to get fit and work hard along with the others. I hope he can make it.

Whatever your views on Harrison let's not get on the guys back if he plays on saturday.his confidence looks fragile enough without 15,000 people abusing him.If Smith picks him he's part of the team so support him.
