Well, we might have! Today's Sun says he's walked out on Fulham because Tigana won't pick him, and that we're 'poised' to snap him up. Sounds like good news - or is it? Isn't Phelan a bit past his sell-by date these days? Should SJ really consider parting with a transfer fee for him? Perhaps he'll be back on loan (whoao-o-o)

I'd be happy to see us sign Terry still - but that would depend on how much the transfer fee would be.

Don't forget we have signed Harrison and Frampton is fit again now - do we want three left backs ?

I can't see Terry getting into the Fulham side as things stand though, so basically he is back to how he was at Everton. I think his squad number at Fulham is thirty something, which tells you a lot, and the only game he's played there so far has been the cup defeat up at Northampton.

It will be interesting to see Fulham's valuation of him ...... any figures mentioned?

He's referred to as the £750,000-rated Republic of Ireland international. Surely we'd never part with that? Sun also says he's 33 and has been on £4,500 a week.

If all that is true - then I hope we don't sign him.

I'd like to see him back. He has a hunger still (he went thru a divorce, which as a senior pro is an expensive experience in relative terms) he is skillful and played a role in keeping us up last year. He can still do well for us at D1 level and we need a squad of players.

Alan, besides if he won't add value I don't think that we'd sign him - Houghton & Smith both know him as a player & as a person.

I would like to see us buy Phelan because he can still do a good job in this division and provide competition for places at left back. Also it's another very experienced player.
However, i wouldn't pay £750,000 for him as i think that's a bit over the top for a 33 year old but knowing Jordan, if we do sign him, he'll haggle a deal out of Fulham somehow.

Dont get me wrong as I think Phelan is a great player. He does it all, Attacks, Crosses and Defends, He's a top left back
BUT!!!!..........
he's 33 and said when leaving us that yes he would love to join us but at his age he must demand a big wage as he is 33 and needs to provide for his family seeing as footballers careers are so short etc etc....
And for £750,000 no-ones gonna buy him and WE COULD GET KONCHESKY FOR THAT PRICE!!!!
And he's supposed to be a Brilliant young prospect who is young hence OVER 10 years of service available whereas Phelan wont go on this long (Obviously).

BUT

I think that Tigana knows he'll never get that money for him and may get rid of him DEAD cheap to get him off the wage bill (not that thats a problem at Fulham but no-one likes a person to take money in this situation) and if he really wants him out he'll give him away.

So if he's free (or DEAD CHEAP) and dont want a big wage or a long contract then I say we get him and create competition for the left back jersey otherwise BUY KONCHESKY!!!!I know he;s young and Smithy is going on about us needing experianced players but if a good opertunity like this comes along you take it!!!! Am I right?

Frampton is too slow and should be released. I have yet to be convinced about Harrison and some competition would do him good. However, do we need 2 injury prone left backs?

I am not doubting that Terry Phelan can still perform well but I am of the firm belief that £750,000 is a bit excessive.Perhaps it was just a mis-print or a figure plucked out of the air.

Phelan in Cottage walk-out
SuperGoals
Saturday, September 2, 2000

TERRY PHELAN has walked out on Fulham following a furious bust-up with his bosses.

The experienced left-back is hopping mad at his lack of first-team action this season.

And emergency peace talks with Craven Cottage chief Jean Tigana have been arranged for next week to stop Phelan quitting the Division One leaders.

Crystal Palace are poised to snap up the £750,000-rated Republic of Ireland international following his successful loan spell there last season.

Fulham PR chief Max Clifford admitted: "We hope the situation can be resolved. Terry is a valuable part of our squad but everyone understands what we need to win the First Division is a squad.

"Senior players want first-team football and Fulham want him to be a part of our squad."

Phelan's £4,500-a-week deal with Fulham expires this summer but, at the moment, the former Everton star is not training with his team-mates.

He has also skipped his country's World Cup qualifier in Holland today because of flu.

Phelan, 33, is growing increasingly frustrated at taking a backseat to Rufus Brevett in defence.

His only appearance this season was in a virtual Fulham reserve side that suffered a 1-0 Worthington Cup defeat at Northampton.

He snapped last weekend and stormed out of the ground when French coach Tigana omitted him from the squad which beat Stockport 4-1.

Phelan has not returned and becomes the second player to slam the tactics of Fulham's new boss.

Striker Geoff Horsfield, now with Birmingham, criticised Tigana, claiming he was axed for being too aggressive.

Given the EU approach to transfers, and one cut-off date I saw was the 20th of this month!! do we really want to spend big cash on someone who is potentially going to be free in a few weeks.
