Another sad story only revealed last night:
Of the 18 killed in the attack on a synogoge in Djerba (Tunesia) last week 11 were German tourists. A 43 year old woman who I personally know (she lives next door) died last night in Hamburg hospital, her son (12) was already dead by then, another son (16) has been flown out to Hamburg were he is treated for his 15 % third degree burns. He's a mate of my daughter.
Oldest son Paul (18) - who was on a skiing holiday - is now left without parents because the father of three has committed suicide last year (throwing himself onto the rail track Hamburg - Lübeck)
The 45-year-old woman was accompanied by her new partner who is nursing his burns in Cologne hospital. His son Lars is my son's friend. They both meet up regularly in VfB Block A (Holmesdale). They attend the same school and often went downtown for a drinking session. Lars is in a koma, he's flown to intensive care in Aachen hospital. He's unable to attend a meeting scheduled for Monday - the last day of a 2-week holiday break.
Terror is all around the world but it's very different when the vitims have got a name and a face.

I don't really feel I should be posting anything after that last post. Makes you realise what is really important in life. But in an effort to steer things back to matters of the round white ball.......
Leverkusen are on song (despite todays draw at Hamburg). Look favourites for the title but don't write off Dortmund.
Looks like you can write us off now. I should have known that any team I follow will bugger things up. Pleeeaase let Rotterdam be a good day out! At least it wasn't Mifsud that scored - not that would have been ironic. :sob:

Looks like Bayer 04 winning the title at last.
To be honest I don't really care about 1. or 2. Bundesliga.
I follow Crystal Palace FC and have a season ticket at VfB Lübeck. The odd local game here and there and that's it for me.
Yesterday I was to see VfB Lübeck II v. FSV Borussia Lübeck in Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein League (5. level) played on a training pitch behind the "holmesdale end". Flat pitch, no perimeter fencing, no terraces - nothing apart from a van selling beer, coffee, coke and sausages and mars bars.
300 attended the game, all standing close to the touchline watching a decent game of footy. Admission 3.50 Euro (you get a 12 page programme for free). I love this stuff. Ask Alan Russell if you don't know what I mean.

VfB Lübeck are playing VfL Osnabrück on Saturday. Osnabrück (down from the pro ranks) have nothing left to play for but are likely to run a special train.
A big crowd expected and I can reveal that VfB Lübeck will have the benefit of a lucky mascot directly flown in from England.
Is the VfB - CPFC connection doing the trick yet again?

Possibly why Westfalia Herne v FC Remscheid was one of my best days out last season. Herne had a Honduran international making his first (& only, I should imagine) appearance & the whole day was comedy. Lots of beer, lots of Wurst & a game of footie. What more can anyone want?

How true. Btw. Westfalia Herne have a great history though and play in a huge ground (for their humble league status).

Bad news for VfB Lübeck. Skipper Martin Przondziono (32) is out for the rest of the season with torn ankle ligaments. :(
He's been a key player this season. Who'll take charge of the midfield in our last 5 matches? Shame Przondziono is out of Saturdays clash with VfL Osnabrück who he'd guided to 2. Bundesliga before moving to nearby Preussen Münster (from which he came to VfB this season).

But a familiar face will grace the Osnabrück side: goalkeeper Uwe Brunn.

We love to hate him (just like Palace like Kevin Miller) :moo: .
1995 - frustrated by missing out on promotion - on telly he accused VfB Lübeck of bribary. Never forgotten.
He got what he deserved 4 years later. Penultimate game Osnabrück top, VfB Lübeck second. 18.000 capacity crowd, VfB had to win to qualify for promotion play-off, and late into second half this happened ....

Werder A fielded an unregistered player for the last 5 minutes in a 1-1 draw at home to Braunschweig. German FA changed the result into a 2-0 win for Braunschweig.:grrr:
"A" teams of pro clubs do wear the same kits but are allowed to use different shirt sponsor.

Last three games for top 3
Leverkusen
1. Werder Bremen H
2. Nurnberg A
3. Hertha H
Dortmund
1. F.C. Koln H
2. HSV A
3. Werder Bremen H
Munich
1. Hertha H
2. Wolfsburg A
3. Hansa Rostock H
All in all I think Munich have the easiest of the run ins, however Leverkusne I feel only need two wins, possibly Bremen and they should beat Nurnberg. Dortmund have an easy first game but difficult last two. I think Munich would beat Wolfsburg and Rostock easily.

Great team effort by VfB Lübeck. The crowd did their part as well. :p
Even injured captain Przondziono came onto the pitch to acclaim the cheers of the fans at our "holmesdale" end.
But the best moment for me was yet to come:
High up in the Main Stands lounge accompanied by Stephenson Soundbyter we were watching the VfB players doing their warm-down jogging exercise. 20 minutes after the final whistle a handful of spectators were left on the A-Block terraces ...
My son and her girlfriend embracing each other and kissing.
Fine end to a fine day of local football.:)

Excellent news in this mornings paper:
The German FA have given VfB Lübeck thumps up. :p
They've checked the proposed budget of the club if they become professional (by winning promotion to 2. Bundesliga).
No luck for SSV Reutlingen, 10th in 2. Bundesliga, though.
They're going to be demoted (one or three divisions). The FA found out that the club did not meet the restrictions already forced upon them (in order to keep them in business this season). Reutlingen have the right to oppose the decision but their case seem to be lost. Unterhaching, down from 1. Bundesliga last season, may benefit and avoid another relegation (to Regionalliga South) at the expense of Reutlingen.
1. FC Nürnberg (Nuremburg) - still in danger of being relegated from 1. Bundesliga recieved a letter of warning, but they look likely to keep their pro by signing a news shirt sponsors contract.

no game for VfB this weekend. The match away to Düsseldorf switched to Tuesday. Two Fortuna Düsseldorf players are elected to represent the Nordrhein FA in very strange cup competition for amateur FA's.

Season before Kaiserslautern won the 1.Bundesliga. Notice how unlike most English First division clubs, namely Bolton, Barnsley, Palace, Watford, and Bradford, that all three of the top teams are still in the top Bundesliga, and all of them were in Europe this season too I believe.

This league is murder.
18 teams in 2. Bundesliga with 3 going up and 4 going down.
7 out of 18 on the move each year (just in case my maths work fine).
Of the clubs VfB Lübeck have met 95-97 some have made it into Europe while others are down to play embarrassing lowly local football at 5. level.

German FA inspection report published today says that only minor alternations have to be made until the start of next season.
A mobile plastic player's tunnel has to be installed as well as another room made ready for players doing their regular doping tests after the match.
The club have a 99-year lease of the ground (starting in the 50s) but the city council own the site and therefore have to pay for the tarmac which has to cover the sandy slope just behind the "Holmesdale" End (left goal).

I have to say that this is one thread I really do enjoy reading and writting on, particularly as Bayer 04 Leverkusen are doing well this season :D (Bring on the Manc Scum in the Bay Arena next week). Ruediger I was wondering if you would be kind to publish a list of the Lubeck playersv with correct positions so that I could edit the Lubeck team on Championship Manager (not sure if you are familiar with the game?) However I have noticed that you said that Daniel Barwolf was a midfielder and in the game he is a striker. Any help would be greatly received.

Daniel Bärwolf is a striker, scored 20+ in last 3 seaons but is playing a bit deeper now (for tactical reasons).

I love the Bay Arena  It's such a tidy ground. Ruediger do you think Leverkusen would get bigger crowds if they expanded? I know the end that is visible can't be extended because it has a hotel joined onto it. I mean 22-26,000 really isn't that big for a team who are now one of the best in Germany and possibly a future force of Europe.

I can't believe Fortuna Duesseldorf are being sponsored by "Die Toten Hosen"...that's pretty comical really.
Are Die Toten Hosen still as popular as they were when I lived in Germany/Switzerland?
For those who don't know, "Die Toten Hosen" are a german rock group...it's a bit like Brighton being sponsored by Skint.

Tote Hosen are at their peak right now. They are on a sell-out tour in Gemany. My son is a fan of Die Toten Hosen. He'll be at the gig in Kiel on May 10.

I got it right. :D
Now the scene is set:
two homes for VfB to come, two wins and they are promoted to the full-pro ranks of 2. Bundesliga. No matter what the other contenders do.
After missing out by a whisker three years running I'm convinced this is going to be VfB Lübeck's year. But as always - at this stage - you tend to ask yourself silly questions. What if ......?
Btw: VfB are now in a Palace-promotion-1977 situation. A win on Saturday would put us 6 pts clear of Essen, who have to play on SUNDAY. VfB fans will be sitting at home waiting for the result from Paderborn
A defeat for Essen at struggling Paderborn - and VfB are promoted.
Would be nice but it's not the real thing.
I'd rather like to see my team battling it out on the pitch, then hear the final whistle, punch the air, jump up and down in delight and clap the team on their lap of honour.
Arm-chair promotion celebration is not what I have been looking for in 5 never-ending years ....

So the season reaches its climax. Tonight Eintracht Braunschweig are at Düsseldorf. I don't expect them to do us any favours after being hammered by VfB in mid-week. On the other hand if Düsseldorf fail to win they'll be DOWN.
VfB are on duty tomorrow, home to KFC Uerdingen. 3 Pts in the bag and that could be it. Should Essen lose at relegation candidates Paderborn (managed by former VfB manager Erkenbrecher) then VfB will be UP.

Damn. Exactly what I did expect.
VfB Lübeck 1, KFC Uerdingen 1.
:grrr:
35 minutes of brilliant passing football, chances galore but no goal. Then seconds before the half-time whistle Vysniauskas had the ball just inside his own half. Nobody near him, he turned once, he turned twice and decided to make a pass .... into the path of an Uerdingen player who made a few steps and lobbed the ball into the net from 35 yards out.
Second half was desperate stuff by VfB. It was as late as 90. minutes when substitute Kruppke was put clean thorugh to score a well deserved equaliser.

Vidmantas Vysniauskas - he was the tragic figure. in recent weeks he was demoted to playing for the II. team on the bumpy pitch behind the Motorway End. Only recalled for Düsseldorf game this week he made a complete blunder. After the games he was in tears.
Nice guy Vidmantas but playing like a donkey.

Can't believe you've all told Latvian exactly what I think of him on the day I was away in Rotterdam!! Been wanting to say that for so long!
Last night was a fantastic atmosphere (despite getting scammed for our tickets - ask Neil the Eagle for the full story! - we still got in) & was v proud of BVB's guts in the 2nd half. Not to be though & was gutted at the final whistle.
This should be my last "interruption" of Rudi's wonderful, emotional thread from my "big club" but for someone who has supported BVB since 1981, regularly travelling to Dortmund for games, I am truly grateful to him for providing a brilliant insite into German football - a big love of mine.
Really, really, really hope VfB do it. Would be a fantastic achivement.
Good luck VfB & hope you have a fantastic promotion party. Next time we're out in Dortmund, we'll try & get to you in the same weekend.
Oh , finally....Latvian - IF you care about as much of any of your big teams (or even understand football supporters) you should be ashamed of your comments. When you go to the games & care so much it feels like suicide when your team loses (came close last night!) you don't need prats like you with a passing interest in Real, Bayer etc rubbing it in. If, on the other hand, you'd like to meet & show me your Champions final ticket, or the ones from Leverkusen, Inter & Real from this season then I'll apologise.

Chemnitz have nothing left to play for since droping out of the promotion race a fortnight ago. Pity is VfB tend to struggle against teams from the former German Democratic Republic.
Last time Chemnitz supporters caused all sorts of problems after leaving the ground. Hope they don't spoil the show but as it's their last away of the season ( and in the western half of Germany they hate so much ) this could lead to trouble.

Why VfB Lübeck 1919 is as old as Crystal Palace FC.
http://www.technik-tipps.de/mirow/vfb/index2/VfB_Lubeck.gif
It is clearly visible in the clubs badge:
VfB Lübecks origin goes back to 1919. But that’s really misleading.
The club has two forerunners.
· BSV Vorwärts (Forwards) was formed in 1919. Colours maroon and white. The club joined the socialist Workers' Sports Union.
· Polizei SV (Police Sports Club) - wearing green and white - was founded in 1921 and became member of the “bourgeois” German Football Association.
In those days clubs weren’t allowed to play against teams from other than their own Association. As a result in 1924 a total of 4 clubs were able to claim The German Football Championship.
In 1933 when the Nazi-party took control the Workers' Sports Union was declared illegal and all club were disbanded.
Sadly BSV Vorwärts official history ends here.
Polizei SV flourished during the 30s.
After the end of the war on allies order every single club had to apply for a license. It was plain obvious that a former “police club” wouldn’t get one. So in May 1945 Polizei SV officials met up with surviving members of the defunct BSV Vorwärts. Both parties agreed to join forces and form a new club under the name of VfB Lübeck 1919.
The compromise solution then was:
green and white = Police colours
1919 = date of BSV Vorwärts foundation.
At the time Polizei SV members didn’t check their own history books properly. Otherwise they would have recognised that they had every right to date their origin back to 1905.
Why?
In 1905 - only two years after the formation of Lübecks first official football club -
FC Allemannia was formed. The club joined the German FA, players were wearing red and white striped shirts and black shorts.
In 1921 FC Allemannia merged with Germania Lübeck (est.1910) to become
VfR Lübeck (R stands for Rasensport = Sports on Lawn).
VfR Lübeck was a force in the 1920 but in 1932 they decided to join Polizei SV who had just won the regional league. VfR brought in all their valuable assets: a perfectly good ground and players.
So all in all VfR did not fold but join Polizei SV.
Therefore Polizei SV's pedigree goes back to 1905, the year our Crystal Palace FC came into being.
How lovely.

Can't wait for Sunday's game kick-off.
Promotion is so important for the city of Lübeck itself. It's not so much a matter of seing a football club going up. It's about the whole region being put on the map again. The city is still in a period of radical change. Heavy industry (shipyard and mechanical engineering) is in decline but other industries such as supply of services are about to develop. Tourism obviously is a key factor and a successful football club is more than just the icing on the cake.
Plain facts speak for themselves ( taken from http://www.luebeck.org )
If you like to work where other people spend their holidays you should take a closer look at Lübeck. More than 800.000 overnight visitors in local hotels clearly indicate one of Lübeck's strengths - quality of life.
But Lübeck has more to offer than just marzipan and the famous landmark Holstentor. Lübeck is the cultural capital of the North. The local theatre and opera, various smaller privately operated theatres, the Nordic film festival, the world-famous Schleswig-Holstein music festival and last but not least two nobel price winners in literature: Thomas Mann (1929) and Günter Grass (1999). All these aspects together have created a lively and ambitious cultural community.
In 1987, the old city of Lübeck with its red brick churches and many well preserved historical buildings was declared UNESCO world heritage. This has caused Lübeck to take ever more steps to develop the cultural assets of the historical city. A challenge the city meets every day.Consequently, the old town centre of Lübeck is filled with life. Various annual events like a medieval market in summer, the craft fair in the historic 'Hospital of the Holy Ghost' or the famous christmas market in front of the town hall, contribute to the appeal of Lübeck.
After a long working day people can relax on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The town of Travemünde is part of Lübeck. Only 15 minutes drive from the city center you can enjoy sandy beaches, all sorts of watersports or the large "Aqua Top", a state-of-the art park where you can enjoy swimming in Baltic Sea water in the winter.
Travemündes annual highlight is the worlds 2nd largest sailing regatta - the "Travemünde week".The surrounding country side also contributes to this high quality of life. Within a short driving distance there are areas for hiking, bicycling, rowing, canoeing, horse-back riding and even skiing country.
The combination of culture, leisure activities, history and state-of-the-art developments contribute to a creative environment which is very attractive to work and live in.
So come on VfB, do it for us.

Main Stand (G1- G6) sold out
Block A: sold out
Block B: small number of tickets available
Old Stand (Block C) sold out
Block E and F: tickets available. My paper are giving away 500 sets of 2 at this very moment in the heart of the city. 5 players attend the meeting.
Block D: reserved for visitors. I do expect no more than 200 from Chemnitz (most of them hardcore hooligans)

Keep it going Rudi. You are managing to get the feel of it all for us.
As I have a soft spot for Bochum, you can make it a glorious weekend. Two German lads were over last summer, and they convinced me to watch thier results. One of the Andreas, is hoping to watch the Palace next year.
Come on Lubeck, get stuck into them!:p

Let me tell you all that I'm really moved by your mails of support. Fantastic. Makes me feel so good.
Had a chat with Stephenson Soundbyter this evening and he's convinced that it's going to be VfB Lübecks day this Sunday. He's paid a fortune to come over and give his support in person just to see my hometown club win promotion to 2. Bundesliga they so richly derserve.
:p
BtW: Latvian, hold your head up high. There's always light at the end of the tunnel. :)

Bochum are a decent club. If you regard the german Ruhr region as equivalent to London than Bochum is Germanys Crystal Palace FC. Good choice.

Just a quick reminder for Neil the Eagle. Wuppertaler SV - wearing red and blue - missed out on promotion from Oberliga Nordrhein to Regionalliga Nord yet again. 1. FC Cologne Amateurs going up instead. How sad.
